Sunday Dec 31 | ||
| Terrain Run (no map) 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Ran in the rain at Afton, almost all off trail. Between the hills and wet leaves, more than just a 2, but the pace didn't feel like a 3. Saw at least a dozen deer and scared away a huge flock of geese down by the river. | ||
Saturday Dec 30 | ||
| Orienteering (field checking) 2:20:00 [2] *** | ||
| First, let me say that I didn't originally plan on spending so much time at Willie-O. But it's so easy to make armchair updates, I feel responsible for ensuring their accuracy with a good close investigation. Made it into the woods by 9 AM, came back to update after an hour, then did another session near noon and adjourned to Roberta's in Marine to get lunch and do more updates. Finished up with another hour in the afternoon.
The river was really noisy today. Big sheets of ice were floating downstream and funneling into a narrow channel, which was totally clogged in a couple places. I got right down on some rocks a couple feet off the water and watched a 50-foot long sheet expend its momentum against the jam just below my feet, throwing up broken pieces of ice and snapping 2-in branches off a old tree frozen into the shore ice. Not quite the Arctic Ocean, but really cool stuff anyway. I think one more day of validating some of the updated areas, and the map will be at "v1.0" status. Got to put my foot down about when to stop, otherwise it'll never end. Raspberries are still a problem - didn't try to address that issue since there's at least a couple km^2 of them.
| Note | ||
| Left ankle was gimpy for some reason. Maybe it's the lack of training this week - I see I've been the slacker 'round here! | ||
Monday Dec 25 | ||
| Terrain Run (no map) 1:05:00 [4] 10 km (6:30 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Good run all around L Maria. Getting dark near the end. Only a couple inches of snow - didn't make much difference. | ||
Sunday Dec 24 | ||
| Trail Run 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| All the trails at wood-rill. Warm day with frozen slush on a lot of the trails. Footing wasn't too bad. No one else was out. | ||
Saturday Dec 23 | ||
| Orienteering 1:20:00 [3] *** | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Another run at WOB, checking out large vegetation features. | ||
Tuesday Dec 19 | ||
| Ski (classic) 1:15:00 [3] 14 km (5:21 / km) | ||
| A few loops at Elm Creek (where else?) with the TNT crew. Snow was pretty good, but it was really crowded with a couple of busloads of high schoolers. | ||
Sunday Dec 17 | ||
| Orienteering 30:00 [3] *** | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Training course at Wirth. Mixed up the intensity - ran hard on course but also spent time standing around to regroup. A strange mix and I'm not sure how much workout I actually got. | ||
Saturday Dec 16 | ||
| Orienteering (field checking) 2:40:00 [2] *** | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| East side of William O'Brien. | ||
| Note | ||
| My right calf has been bothering me this week, but I got a lesson in perspective today when I tripped and went down hard on a rock. Nice little egg on the front of my shin. | ||
Monday Dec 11 | ||
| Orienteering 34:52 [4] *** 5.98 km (5:50 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| TNT moved to Monday this week. Night sprint at Como, set by JJ. Good course that took us out into the golf course for some fast running. Started to make some little mistakes on the last half of the course, more in execution than in planning. | ||
| Orienteering (control retrieval) 20:00 [2] ** | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Retrieving some tapes w/Justin and Julia | ||
Sunday Dec 10 | ||
| Hiking 30:00 [2] | ||
| Hike at the Arboretum. Went to check on the trees we planted last April. | ||
| Trail Run 20:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Quick trail run at Wood-Rill. | ||
Saturday Dec 9 | ||
| Map Run 2:45:00 [2] *** 12 km (13:45 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Checking the new base map at WOB. It's quite good, even in the wooded areas. Trails, ponds, and point features need some simple updates, and the vegetation needs a lot. Still, it's a great improvement. | ||
Friday Dec 8 | ||
| Ski (classic) 30:00 [3] 5 km (6:00 / km) | ||
| shoes: Alpina X-C ski boots | ||
| It's on the other side of town, but it's snow.
Took Annie out and went around the loop with her. Out an hour, only half with any intensity.
Monday Dec 4 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Left Achilles is tweaking again from yesterday's hills. Not ready to call it an injury yet, though. Rest today. | ||

| Possum Trot X at Heartland Conference. Not a good run, but fun. The bad:
- Wanted to get to 1 ahead of the major crush for the punch, so ran hard and got there in the first few. That kept me from seeing the group that wisely decided to skip #2. I didn't see 2 as an option until after a couple more controls where I had the chance to slow down and check the whole loop. - Steven G and I messed up going to 2, then I messed up going to 3 and fell well into the middle of the pack. Not the plan I wanted to go with this year. Went safe and easy to 4 and 5 to settle down and get into the map. - I easily could have been 10 minutes faster with spikes on instead of trail shoes. Had to kick steps mountaineeing-style going up at least one spur. The good: - Kept energy level up the whole race. GU in the sleeve worked as anticipated. - From about #6 on my navigation and route choice was pretty good. - Ran back and forth with Steven G for a fair amount of the race. Forgot to take splits. I would have been happier with a 2:15 finish, with any less (from drafting on the lead pack) being bonus.
