Sunday Aug 31

Terrain Run (no map) 40:00 [3] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
Various places. Ran into some thick buckthorn in one area - bummer.
Trail Run 1:00:00 [2] 5.5 mi (10:55 / mi)
Averaged out a combination of pace - some low 8, some 9-10, some walk/bushwhack. Various places.

Tuesday Aug 26

Orienteering 1:20:00 *** 10 km (8:00 / km) +130m 7:31 / km
spiked:13/16c shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black
OTNT at Wirth. mobiz set up a modified version of the "search for the one-eyed hooker" event from last year. This time there were two of them (big orange flags, that is), and that added a lot of strategy about which one to go for as they got separated. Even split - successfully moved a flag forward four times and tagged others to steal the flag four times. A couple of good sprints included, one with Tom and one with Julia.

Monday Aug 25

Terrain Run (no map) 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Checking out some areas on the east side of town.

Sunday Aug 24

Hiking 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
Hiking around and scrambling to get some waterfall pictures. Didn't log all the time.

Saturday Aug 23

Paddling (kayak) 1:30:00 [2] 5.0 mi (17:59 / mi)
Paddle around White Pine Lake, with a strong NW wind. The near shore was fine, as was coasting with my back to the wind (using the paddle as a sail), but going into the wind and waves was tough.

MTB (technical) 1:20:00 [3] 12.0 mi (6:40 / mi) +400m 3:45 / km
MB trails at Lutsen. They're not well marked, so I went back and forth, up the hill, down the hill, got on the Superior Hiking trail by accident, turned around, got the cassette hosed up with weeds, went up the really steep part of Moose Mtn, had to walk it up in full view of the lodge patrons, went down the really steep part of Moose Mtn, got lost on another ski trail heading towards god-knows-where, turned around, blah blah blah. Fun day with a great view of the lake.

Thursday Aug 21

Paddling (kayak) 3:32:00 [2] 13.6 mi (15:35 / mi)
Paddle the Mississippi from Palisade to SH-169. A little more regular with less downed trees than the section above. Clay soil was messy. Also spent a little time paddling up the Willow River, a clear stream from 2-18 inches deep, and moving a couple mph.

MTB (road) 42:00 [3] 8.8 mi (4:46 / mi)
Bike back to the car at Berglund Park, after stashing the kayak. Mostly gravel road.

Lake Elmo sprint, set by JJ. Good run.
MTB (technical) 25:00 [3] 5.0 mi (4:59 / mi)

Paddling (kayak) 1:00:00 [2] 2.7 mi (22:14 / mi)
Morning paddle around Savanna Lake and up the river, over both beaver dams.

MTB (technical) 1:22:00 [3] 13.8 mi (5:57 / mi) +170m 3:33 / km
Loop ride around Savanna Portage. Mileage is a bit off, 13.8 is what the bike computer said.

Rogaine at Jay Cooke. More later.

Thursday Aug 14

MTB (road) 1:27:00 [2] 16.0 mi (5:26 / mi)
Ramble over through downtown and Mounds Park. Kept it easy. Cut the ride a little short when I fell over and gouged my left kneecap. Luckily, direct pressure was the trick and I was able to ride home.

Saturday Aug 9

Orienteering 14:00 [2] ** 2.3 km (6:05 / km)
orange-level course at hyland. I'm counting this because I broke a good sweat.

Friday Aug 8

MTB (road) 3:16:00 [3] 49.3 mi (3:58 / mi)
Not sure how much training time I can fit in this weekend. Got a full Saturday PM with mobiz & friends, then Annie's in from Seattle and we're going to Lacrosse on Sunday. So I got in a long workout today. Legs are stiff again :)

Thursday Aug 7

Note
(rest day)
Legs a little stiff from yesterday - figure a rest is in order.

Wednesday Aug 6

Trail Run 1:30:00 [3] 11.3 mi (7:57 / mi) +100m 4:49 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black
All trails, all the time, no stop, no water. Last 20 minutes got a little challenging as I started to dehydrate. At Sunfish - a small park. There was one section of trail I ran no less than six times. Hencely, no route today because it would be a mess, both to record and to read.

Tuesday Aug 5

Trail Run 1:00:00 [2] * 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +80m 5:58 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black
TNT trail run at Hyland. Took turns leading the group on a fixed route split across 3 maps. Also includes run back to start.
Orienteering (Micro) 7:00 [5] ** 1.0 mi (7:00 / mi)
spiked:8/8c shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black
Tape pickup race around visitor center. Logged intensity 5 since I almost puked.

The exercise certainly gave too much advantage to fast runners. Darryn suggested improving the incentive by doubling up on the tape. Tripling might even work well (i.e., first two or three runners to a point get to score, instead of just the first one.)

Monday Aug 4

Event: 2008 Laramie Daze & US Champs

MTB (technical) 54:00 [3] 8.9 mi (6:03 / mi)
Leb 1X, 1XX + new blue with Dan and Matt.

Sunday Aug 3

Paddling (kayak) 1:50:00 [2] 8.5 mi (12:55 / mi)
Super duper secret area. Some light rapids and bounced off a few rocks, another foot of water would have been better.
MTB (road) 40:00 [3] 10.0 mi (3:59 / mi) +80m 2:26 / km
Bike from takeout back to the car, plus checking out an ATV trail.
Trail Run 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +30m 5:56 / km
Easy jog at some mega secret surprise place. Looked really nice and open, but I suspect it's too "managed" to be suitable for my original plan.

On my way in I heard a bunch of wood cracking and found the source a little farther up the hill; a full 60 ft mature tree that had been blown over and was laying against a couple of its siblings. Right at the exact moment I came up to it, several large chunks peeled off the trunk and crashed to the ground, together with a number of branches dislodged from farther up in the crown. (This all happened about 20-30 feet off the trail, so there was no danger.)

I'm now sure that when a tree falls in the forest and there's someone there to hear it, it make a sound.
C • What are the odds?!? 2

Friday Aug 1

MTB (road) 25:00 [3] 6.0 mi (4:09 / mi)
From Dave's house to Leb and back.
MTB (technical) 1:15:00 [3] 11.2 mi (6:42 / mi)
Singletrack at Leb with Dave, including the newest Dream Trail section. Wow. They just keep adding more and more great trail.
