Orienteering race 11:43:00 [1] 38.0 km (18:30 / km) +985m 16:23 / km
shoes: LaSportiva FireBlade

53, 68, 23, 65, 30, 69, 79, 59, 49, 67, 37, 73, 45, 51, 28, 74, 32, 26, 76, 42.

Met my partner, Earl for the first time Friday night. I live close enough that I didn’t need to camp the night before but figured I could get to know Earl if I arrived early.
We were given our maps a little after 10am and had 2 hours to devise a completely ridiculous route. If we had known how much the heat would affect Earl our route would have looked very different.

Start to 53. Straight shot down to 53. Red Pine vegetation boundaries would make this control and many other easy. We had a small train following us to 53.

68. Stayed on the north side of the stream and soon realized that we would need to stick to trails more as rough terrain exaggerated the differences in our trekking speed. There was already a well-defined heard path leading to the control.

23. Dropped down into creek bed and followed old trail on Eastern side. Combination of red pine and overgrown field made control easy.

65. North to trail. Jumped off trail at highest point on the ridge and followed contours straight to the control. Several other teams were wandering the hillside below the control.

30. Took longer than expected. Was a straight shot East from 65.

69. Chose a long route by attacking from the road. We still over shot it, by walking past it on the West side of undergrowth.

79. We were still moving fairly well. Headed North to the road. Went past logging trucks and attacked off a old logging road.

59. I should have learned more from this control. We crossed many subtle features that weren’t on the map. There were multiple streambeds that could pull someone off course. I wasn't tricked by them and hit control easily.

49. First control that I felt was nowhere near where it should have been. We lost a good 30 minutes wandering around the spur when all we should have done was travel 150m up hill. Some of this is due to the way the Hemlock is mapped in comparison to the Read Pine and Norway spruce. I still felt it wasn’t on the same contour as the clearing South of the road.

67. North to the road, then trail to the clearing and West to the control. Easy since there were now herd paths to most controls.

37. Water control. We disrupted a team napping. Both of us had consumed 3L of water. This is the first time Earl started to look like he was over heating.

73. Almost over shot it, but the herd path led straight to it.

45. Followed stream to trails and straight to the control.

51. Several large reentrants weren’t on the map, but the train to the control helped.

28. Focused on saving Earl’s legs and took time for solid food. We were starting to slow as Earl’s face turned red. This is the first time I truly thought our first loop might be too much.

74. All trails and Red Pine boundaries. It was scary to look out and see how far 70 was from here.

32. South to Pipeline and East to the top of the reentrant.

As we climbed out to the road I turned to see that Earl was struggling. The problem was we had picked up all of the controls on this hillside and didn’t have a path back to the HH that included controls. We turned south and used roads to head to 26.

26. Lots of nasty nettles. Was dark when we reached it.

76. We stayed in the streambed. Led another team to the control.

42. Long climb up to the road using the ski trail.

54. MISSED. I should have learned about the subtle features. We gave up too easily and headed in for dinner.

Dinner was amazing. I overate but knew we were going to sleep for 5 hours so didn’t worry about it.

TC 8k. I made 3 small mistakes and 2 large mistakes. Events like this are nice since I lack the speed to just run out of trouble, instead I paid for it.
