Adventure Race (Mission 18hr) 17:51:00 [3]
A great day of racing with bugeater as Silent Chasers. This is only our third time racing together and first time in 2 years but clicked well. Similar goals and strengths. This was to be a 'training' run for Cowboy Tough but we were definitely going to race it. The race started with a prologue, of sorts, where one team member needed to get to the person on the other side of the lake with the red light to get the map while one teammate got the CP info for the first section. Two options to getting on the other side of the lake: 1 - paddle across with the little boats without paddles; 2 - run around. I think most selected run around but the paddle was faster. After completing each section, you got the information for the next section (and so on). We were about 8 minutes behind the leaders as we headed onto the first section (MTB leg) but had a good 2-man pace line going and caught them by the time we got to the 'Large Utility Pole' CP. From then it was a 3 team race and the entire day was an exchange leads between us, Alpine Shop and Rev3... until the final trek, where Alpine Shop took the win with us finishing 3rd... The #34 will forever haunt us in our dreams... ;-)
Random thoughts:
Scary moment of the race.... coming down from a vista on the first MTB leg, bugeater came very close (2ft close) to going over the edge at a hairpin turn.
Good Samaritan Award... Bugeater for pointing out CP 20 to Alpine Shop... We are approaching CP 20 on the first trek - which we started about 13min behind Alpine Shop - when we see Silkychrome pop out of the woods and indicate that they can't find it. We keep going another 30m or so and I quickly jump into the re-entrant (which is really more like a gully) to grab it and then he shows her where it is before we move on.
Roller blading... It was kind of cool having it incorporated into the race but not a big fan of the sport. I am probably one of a few Canadians that doesn't like skating... There was a section on Hwy 50 that they were prepping for paving and I think we would have gotten more roll if we were skating on a cheese grater.
Nutrition / electrolytes / water... managed them well throughout. Got a little low on water near the end of the first trek but nothing major.
Preparedness... was mentally and physically ready for this. Would train exactly the same way for this.
Weather.... Perfect. A bit of rain coming off the ropes but nothing serious.
The body... feels good. Very tired but all the driving there and back (about 30hrs total) certainly didn't help. One minor blister on the ball of my left foot. Only really pain is my left calf where I four marks from the teeth of my crank. Don't know how that happened because the crank is on the right...
Not sure what was tougher, the almost 18hrs of racing or the 16-ish hrs of driving home... ouff!
