The horn sounded at 5:30 am. and I started out at what I thought was a reasonable pace. It was clear right away that there were quite a few fast people running. I tried to stay with a group of runners, but the group of runners were just too strong and they drifted away. As I reached the road running parallel to the ocean (around 5 km. into the race) and I started to pass some marathon runners who started at 4:00 am. I took a gel around the 8 km. mark and it did not go down so well. I managed to hold my pace until just past the turn around when some runners passed me. I felt like I was struggling and it would be difficult to maintain my pace. I slowed down as I focused on putting one foot in front of the other and holding off the other runners to take a top 50 spot and 1,000 THB. I took another gel around the 16 km. mark and it seemed to give me a little boost of energy. As I ran away from the ocean with around 4 km. to go I knew that I was sitting in around 30th place overall (from counting the runners at the turn around point). My goal was to not let any other runners pass me. That is just what I did as I crossed the line in a disappointing time, although still good for 28th overall and 4th in the 16-29 age group. I got a trophy and 1,000 THB for placing in the top 50 overall (under 1:50), with a maximum of 10 foreigners (I was the 2nd) getting the money!
