I woke-up at 2:50 am. and made my way down to Central World mall in the centre of downtown Bangkok. I arrived at 4:25 am. and I had time to get ready and for a short warm-up. I positioned myself as close to the front as I could get (about 9 rows of runners from the front). The gun went off at 5:00 am. and the mass of runners exited the Central World Square area and onto the road. There was a traffic jam at 5:00 am. Mass chaos ensued with runners weaving and squeezing between cars, buses, while motorcycles tried to do the same. It was really quite dangerious actually. This is where my orienteering history came in handy, as I was efficient in picking the best route through the 200 or so meter traffic jam. I soon found myself leading the race! I am not sure how the runners infront of me were so inefficient making their way through the traffic. After leading the race for about 100 meter, the Kenyans zipped by me. I settled into a comfortable pace. A few people passed me, but for the most part I maintained my pace and position. I took a gel at the 5 mile water stop. The traffic control was terrible and non existent I was feeling good and I had no pain in my legs whatsoever. As I was running down Silom Rd. around mile #7, I was thinking that the course may be short because I knew where the 9th mile mark was from seeing it when I was going to the race. "So what about mile 8?" There was a small out and back loop and the route was actually correct. I crossed the line in 3rd/635 in the 15-29 age group and 17th/3,183 overall! I got a trophy.
