Orienteering race 24:07 [5] *** 2.8 km (8:37 / km) +20m 8:19 / km
spiked:14/18c shoes: Asics Gel-Speedstar 6 2012

Hong Kong Sprint Orienteering Championships (WRE) at Fanling Wai. A beautiful sprint venue with a mix of park and a very complex village area. I started out quite well spiking the first four controls (including the fastest split on #4). I took a poor route choice to #5 and lost 0:30. I hesitated at #12 because I could not see the control (I was standing 5 meters from it!), I lost 0:20. I took another poor route choice to #12 due to just running and not looking at my map enough, I lost 0:30. Then I blew-up and just ran, causing me to loose contact with the map and costing me 4:20! A poor exit of #17 cost me 0:20. Overall an ok park section to the course (1:20 lost) and a brutal village section (4:40 lost)!

Orienteering race 47:33 [5] *** 3.2 km (14:52 / km) +150m 12:02 / km
spiked:8/12c shoes: The North Face Single-track T.

Hong Kong Middle Orienteering Champinships (WRE) at Ngong Ping. I spiked #1 which was one of my main goals to set the tone for the rest of the race. I took the long trail route to #2 which appears to be the best route. I briefly lost contact with the map just before #2 and lost 2:00. Going to #6 I went off the trail in the wrong direction and missed a small trail leading close to the control. I ended up getting stuck in the green and bashing around. I lost 8:00! I had a small bobble of #8 where I lost 0:30 and #9 where I lost 1:00. The last three controls I spiked. I guess I have to be happy with the result given I have not orienteered in over 1 year (NAOC in October 2014). I had the fastest split to #3 and to the finish!

From the Tian Tian Budda (Nong Ping) on Lantau Island in Hong Kong past the Wisdom Path and up Lantau Peak (the second highest mountain in Hong Kong) to the road and then along the road to Tung Chung. Good visibility with the moonlight and the lights from the airport.
