The race started at 6:45 am. and I was feeling very good at the start of the race! I was ready to have a good run and challenge for one of the top placings. I started out fast and established myself near the front of the pack. I took the small hills in the first 3 km. of the course with small quick strides. Then the course flattened out I took the opportunity to increase my speed. I passed the checkpoint in 53:16 in 8th place overall. Then at the 10.47 km. aid station I took a gel and filled up my Camelbak. After walking up some steep hills I reached the U-turn point just past 13 km. I was feeling ok, but my legs were starting to hurt a little and I knew that the last 8 km. would be much more difficult. I stopped at the same aid station (the only one on the course besides water stops) to fill up my Camelbak and I took another gel. Then I continued along, but the gel was shortlived and I started to slow down. With about 2 km. to go I was able to go a little faster and I crossed the finish line strong! I placed 6/679 overall and 6/389 in the Male Open category. Just out of the top 5 (5th place was just 1:22 ahead of me), but still happy with the result.
