Running race 4:04:57 [5] 42.2 km (5:48 / km) +26m 5:47 / km
shoes: Nike Zoom Elite 9 2019

I woke up at 2:00 am. I got a ride to the pick-up truck shuttle that brought me to the Chang International Circuit. The Buriram Marathon was awarded the certification for the first time this year as a IAAF Bronze Label Race. The gun went off at 4:00 am. and the race started. I started out at a comfortable pace, not knowing what to expect given the lack of training recently. Around the 8 km. mark I was caught by the 3:30 pace group. I took a gel at the 10 km. water stop and continued running with the 3:30 pace group until around the 16km. mark. I was feeling ok, but by the 21.1 km. mark my pace was dropping off slightly. At the 24 km. mark I was handed 2 gels and I took both of them. The gels did not seem to help much energy wise, as I took my first walking break at about the 24.5 km. mark and I was passed by the 3:45 pace group. I took another gel at the 28 km. and I almost immediately had stomach problems. I had to keel over by the side of the road. I remember thinking "this is no good, still 14 km. to go". I kept moving passing many half marathon runners, which was great motivation. Aroud the 34 km. mark I was passed by the 4:00 pace group! I took a final gel at the 36 km. mark and pressed to the finish line with awesome support and encouragement from all the fans cheering. Passed 37 people in the final 2.2 km.! I placed 823/5,218 overall and 267/1,480 in the 30-39 age group.
