Orienteering race 54:00 [4] 4.85 km (11:08 / km)

ICO Bradford Woods Red - overly easy course that didn't use the detailed contour areas left by past sand excavation at all and had little route choice, with most controls more orange than advanced. Designed by an apparently experienced adventure racer and hung by another set of adventure racers in their maiden involvement in course setting so allowances must be made but there was really no excuse for the imprecision with which the master maps were drawn - I looked at all three red masters just to get a sense of the consensus view of where the circles were supposed to be centered and found that one control was marked perhaps a hundred meters differently on one of the three maps compared to the other two. Control 6 out of 9 was the most interesting technically. Unfortunately, it was mishung. As best we can piece events together, it was wildly mishung so far away from where it was supposed to be that I never would have found it. Somehow, Mike Minium nevertheless located it and moved it but to, as he realised on his way to the finish, not quite the right place but perhaps 50 or 60 meters north and slightly east of the center of the circle (as I drew it, at least). This was at least close enough for my systematic search of nearby reentrants to turn it up so I then moved the control to the reentrant that had been circled on the master maps.

Fairly hot and visibility was at low summer levels so not very fast. A couple of USMAOC members were there and both started slightly before me but I passed them as I did the third and fourth controls and didn't see them again thereafter so I wasn't under much competitive pressure.
