Putting recharged batteries in Stealthcam. Working up quite a sweat, in spite of the track we broke yesterday.

On an organizational note, they did have separate trailers by wave for the return bags, which was nice. First time the bags with dry clothing and shoes arrived not 20-30' after me. I went straight from the finish to picking up my bag to the very nice and warm changing room. The big top was also much warmer than usual, I ended up stripping to my tee after a while. The party was a blast, the Love Dogs did great, even without their leader.

Weather and snow were perfect, We got to Ashland's Maslowski's Beatch Park about an half hour before the start. The tent was crammed full as usual but we managed to squeeze in. With about 15 minutes remaining, I headed to the start. This being my first time doing this race as a classic skier, I did not know what to expect. Four tracks, which turned out to go all the way to the finish area and even arriving only 10 minutes before the start, I ended up self-seeding three skiers back. A woman to my left, a second wave skier switched with me and I ended one skier back. After the start, a group of three skiers slowly pulled away from me leaving me alone to double-pole into the darkening evening. I saw some skiers move into the classic lanes. They seemed to want to visit some of the aid stations set up at one km intervals, handing out cookies and schnaps and other non-competition promoting goodies. I slowly closed in on them but before I reached them, they moved back into the skate lane. Around km 5, I was passed by a classic skier who used kick double poling and double poling. He slowly moved into the twilight ahead. There were only a couple of truly icy spots, probably where they fixed a pressure ridge, but even there, it was easy to keep going. The mean cast shadows into the tracks, first time I had that kind of light for a Book event. Somewhere between 8 and 9 km, I was passed by two HS or college kids who were racing each other. hey must have been registered as skate skiers because I was the fourth classic skier to be registered in the results.
Some gear info: not having done a proper wax job on my skis in some time, I applied some Toko Grip and Glide followed by some Fastwax Slick Universal paste wax. I brushed it in and polished it with paper towels. I had very good glide.
