Namekagon Camp 16.5 to 1.5
10:40 AM; Namekagon River

16.6 °C; Clear
After a good breakfast (Craig's dutch oven mountian man breakfast) we packed up and shoved off. We hoped to push all the way to the St. Croix, for a group site on Big Island, almost 30 km. The current was swift and the wind generally favorable, letting us make good progress. We broke for lunch at Group Camp 8.8, surprised to not see the group of six women from the previous day here yet. Craig, Joel and I had camped here on our second fall trip, a beautiful site. As we left, the women arrived, they'd had lunch at West Howell. We continured, seeing a few other occupied sites. I was practicing the power stroke and got ahead of the others for a while, noticing that two group sites in a row were occupied. I waited for my friends and suggested we should take N1.5 if available. Craig, Joe and I stopped at a sandbank/island jsut before N1.5 and checked it out. very tempting but we noticed Ben and David already unloading their canoe at the actual site. we joined them and found a beautiful camp. Heard barred owls call during night and coyotes pre-dawn.

Did an early morning hike and jog with the dogs before work and the PM departure for canoe trip. Beautiful pre-dawn atmosphere, heavy dew on the grass. Had a few stops to take photos. I love that time between night and day.

Easy drive up and good timing between our and Craig's arrival. He got there with the Jack's Canoe Renal guy in tow, whom we had hired to shuttle us just as we were done loading our canoes. Helped Craig to empty his car and had me and Ben leave to shuttle the cars to Riverside. about 50 minutes RT with the friendly guy from Jack's. Shoved off a little after 4:00 PM and made good progress. Targeted sites were taken, one by a group of women who tempted us with siren calls of screw drivers, wine and calls like "We are married but they're not here!" Needless to say that we resisted by tying our hads to the paddles, sealing our ears with hemp and wax and continuing on. Made it to camp by 5:00. Steak dinner with manhattans for dessert. Life is good!

Slept fairly well last night, woke up early with the worry of getting both of my boys up and out, the elder to the airport on his way to LA via Spirit Air ($150 RT), the younger to his new job as a fire spotter for a welder at the Hastings Aurora Solar Farm construction site, with the latter giving the former a ride to MSP. They were out of the house at 6:00 AM, big relief! I followed shortly thereafter. Feeling colder every morning, the wind had turned, coming from a northerly direction now.Nice to not have it blow directly into my face. good ride all in all, again looking forward to a warm shower. 8 m to 3 f runners.

Nice walk, came home late, dogs were very excited and happy to see me. Poor old Mellie was yanked left and right by little Roux, who is not that little any longer. Accident at Pierce Butler and East of Snelling intersection.

Still a very windy morning, ducked for a ride through the neighborhood again for some shelter. Forgot to mention that they finished the short piece connecting Dinkytown Greenway with Northern Pacific Bridge #9, next to the UMN power plant. I didn't mind the gravel but they did excavate last week, getting ready for the blacktop. That created a steep step down and up on that section, glad they got the work done on Friday. I also noticed that they are putting in pavement heating on Nicollet Mall. 9 F to 6 M runners this morning.

Saw Dan in the Bike room, he asked "Think we'll beat the rain home?" I thought we would but I was wrong. Light drizzle when I exited which gradually increased to a light rain. I saw Dan again on the campus connector. He takes a shorter route. By that time, it was raining steadily ...

Decent headwind this morning, so much so that I took the route through S St. Anthony. First time it felt truly fall like, thanks to a combination of temps near 10 °C and the stiff wind. Glad I chose long sleeves and gloves for this morning's ride and took a warm shower instead of a cool one. 4 female to 8 male runners, not counting 20+ soldiers running in squad formation.

I much prefer to ride home with the wind in my back, especially on a day like today. Super strong wind, gusting to 40 kmh fueled my ride and I worked on supporting it by riding hard. Looked like DeLaSalle HS runners were ou along the rivert, counted 26 M 18 F runners total this PM.

Rain came later than expected, so we walked later. Avoided the shrubland, did not want to get a shower from the bushes and trees. Temps dropped after the rain moved out.
