Drove with Karl to the parking off Hadley and the Gateway Trail and met up with John, Julie, Britt and Andy. Easy pace, first out to Pine Point Park, turning around after a little more than an hour for those who needed to be done in two hours. Karl and I split from the group to ski part of Brown's Creek Trail. we turned around at Manning Rd. My first roller ski in about two months. It felt good and I hope, we all hoped, that the next time will be on snow!

Colder but by no means uncomfortable this morning and a few snowflakes. A light headwind, too. I passed a rider who was just a little slower than me on the transit way and he gave chase. I always take a route that flows best in my mind, like going N on 25th Ave SE near the end of the transitway to stay on the bike trail. Many riders cut across on a service road that runs somewhat diagonally from 25th and the transitway to 23rd and 6th St SE. That may be a little shorter but you have to merge into traffic (not at 6 AM) and cross an intersection with stop signs. So my guy took the shortcut and we joined again on 6th, he on the road and I on the bike trail. He was definitely giving chase now. I just kept going, pedaling maybe just a little harder than usual. On Dinkytown Greenway, I had a close encounter with a rabbit. Avoided him by a hair. One thing I noticed this week was that the stiles on either end of the boardwalk along Mill City Museum were removed. I assume they are there to slow down cyclists on this busy stretch of combined foot and bike path and that they need access for snow removal equipment now.

Friday night hike con los perros. And lucky dogs they were, chasing rabbits along the tracks, sniffing here and there. Some snowflakes in the air, things are looking up!

Took the direct route. I have to say, Going N on Marquette goes pretty well. If I leave before 16:00, the right lane is still blocked by parked car, leaving a nice strip for the bike. I turned right on 2nd St. N, which worked better. Stuck for a moment behind a school bus dropping a kid but I would have had to wait for a light anyway. Like this morning, I pushed the tempo a little.

It felt actually like snow when I got going and it was snow, east of Hwy 280. The rabbits living under the 280 bridge did threaten to kick me off my bike but I was able to avoid them. Unfortunately, the hot air this created turned snow back into rain. Since there was somewhat of a headwind with this icy rain, I rode S on Portland and W on 11th to get a little shelter.

No dilly-dallying around today, just straight walking and a little running. Dogs were a pest on lead today, all about sniffing here and sniffing there.

Did not really feel like riding but rode anyway and it felt so good. Some days I leave at the same time as a colleague who goes the more direct route to Dinkytown Greenway while I head west and come from CLT. I tend to catch him somewhere along the UMN Transit Way. Not the last two times, no trace of him. Since I catch him and since, when I head straight for the river from work it takes me about as long as my usual 1.5 km detour takes me, I suspect he must have been stuck at some lights. Who knows, some day I need to go have a beer with him ...

Needed to fall back on my emergency blinky, forgot to recharge my tail light. Doing this right now, also giving the headlight a boost. Another damp and cool morning. Light drizzle, which I would like to be snow, but it isn't. Army ROTC setting up for a time trial on Dinkytown Greenway, quite a few soldiers warming up already. Noticed that there seemed to be more women than men in this group. Few cyclistst out, the ones I see and the tracks I see going from wet pavement into tunnels. Road spray got to me only during my downtown stretch, soaking my pant legs and socks. Not sure if ther was more water or my increased pace to make all the lights.

Energy Park Short Hike
4:29 PM; Hamline Midway/Frogtown

2.9 °C; Light rain
Normal, wet and rainy walk, mostly. When I walked behind the buildings at Energy Lane, I heard the unmistakeable huffing and puffing of a steam locomotive and then saw the smoke from its stack. I sprinted up the embankment to take a picture. No time to adjust for the fading light so I have some nice motion blur in my pics. I managed to do a faceplant on the way back down, catching my foot in a vine. Fortunately, the ground was soft and no damage was done, well worth it.

Light rain on the way home, my concession to the Belgian/British weather was to take the more direct route. 2 km shorter but about the same time due to waiting at traffic lights. It probably was a wash.

Home later means walking in near darkness, especially when overcast like today. But it has its charms, too. Felt some snowflakes hitting my face, a welcome sensation. Decided to forego tonight's intensity workout, my body feels beat up from the weekend.

Rain
Started in the dry, deluged about 2/3 through. There is a certain level of fun involved in running in heavy rain, as long as you know that there are dry clotthes and a hot shower at the other end. The dogs are not happy becuase they are blocked into the back hallway until dry.

Foggy morning, Hiked across the wetland again and continued on the RR grade to the Sioux River slough I love the birch trees flanking the trail on either side on this stretch. Picked up the 2 x 10 10' plank on the way back. I would have probably tried to shoulder it hadn't it been for a nail sticking out right in the middle. Not sure that I would have made it the entire way with this waterlogged piece of wood. I had brought a rope which I used to guide it in the water along the shore instead.

Bikejoring with Roux and Mellie
12:13 PM; Washburn, WI

3.4 °C; Cloudy
Took lil' Roux down the beach, he doesn't have any trouble keeping up, doesn't even breathe through his mouth but does not want to pull. He pulls all the time when he's with Mellie, so I brought Mellie out when we got back and we rode to Bayview Park. Sure enough, Roux pulled nicely. Need to figure out how to get him to pull when it's just him and me.
