Skijoring Loppet 10 km

Super icy course, much of it on broken crust and some on ice made this a challenge for me and Roux. I saw a bit of blood on the course and a few wipeouts. the leaders (this being the national one-dog championship) left us behind very quickly. We caught up with a couple of skiers whose dogs were giving up. Roux got pretty tired towards the end of the first lap but hung in there. I wonder whether some of it was just running on the coarse surface. We passed the starting area shortly before the 5k racers were taking off, quite a few of whom started passing us. That gave Roux some motivation to hang on. We mingled in with the 3k beginners for the finish, many of whom we passed on the bumps and in the turn to the finish. Good job, little Roux!

A once in a lifetime experience. I guess I'll have another go at it next week, skijoring. Fun chatting and skiing with friends, with hundreds of gawkers., dodging fatties and inner tubes. It was actually a pretty decent workout!

Did not want to go far because I want Roux to be super excited about moving tomorrow, for the big race, and also because it is rather sloppy. A little worried about standing water on the lake. But that can wait till tomorrow. Tonight, all of a sudden I found myself with three dogs. A young wirehair pointer surprised us from behind. I attached her to Mellies leash and since we were just coming by Lynn and Lisa's house, I stopped to inquire. Her name is Sage, apparently she jumps the fence quite frequently. Lynn pointed me to a house down the block. Two young boys welcomed their dog back. Arriving home, I had a quick chat with Chris, who was just coming home from work.

Skijoring Highland 1 Lap Mellie Roux
5:17 AM; Highland 9 Hole

-4.6 °C; Cloudy
Fast out of the gate but I know it would not last, the snow still being super soft. Many little dimples bore witness of the dogs who had been out before us but it's safe to say that we were the first ones today. Initially, Mellie showed aggression towards Roux, wanting to be the lead dog. The old girl tired out quickly though and Roux started pulling her and me keeping my weight off the line. During the climb in the middle of the course, Roux started shenanigans, maybe payback for Mellies earlier moves? anyway, they got tangled and I had to undo it. I think Mellie was glad to be done today. On the other hand, Roux was ready for more.

Only one extra lap with Roux this morning, He started out by pulling very well but looked tired during the last two climbs. Very proud of the little guy, though! My left ski hit something grabby on the little steep section by the stadium and made me stumble. Maybe a piece of tree bark or a piece of garbage? Did not linger to investigate.

1/23/2018 - 6:29 PM:
Forgot my poles and had already made up my mind to do a no pole session when Andy offered me his Yoko racing poles. One was a pink Kikkan Randall one, which he had just bought to replace a broken blank. I managed to break it during the 4th interval, what a bummer. Should be under warranty, though, Andy was very kind. So I had 3.5 intervals with poles and 2.5 without. The trails with real fresh snow were quite soft but quite skiable. Had put a layer of Rex blue on my skis before the practice, which worked very well. During my last downhill, another skier passed me and I ended up catching up to him. He wanted to let me go ahead of him for the next uphill but i demurred, pointing to the broken pole.

Our train did not continue past the stadium so I walked the remainder. I guess a good check for Super Bowl week. Oddly, trains that came after the one I was on rode by. Funny GPS track while I was between the tall buildings DT.

Train did not come before two Blue trains came by. University looked like a parking lot, made me appreciate I was going by rail. The walk up Simpson was a slog, used the ruts left by the few passing cars. Shoveled the way to the back door before getting ready for the heavy duty plowing. Kid from the rental next door asked if I could help with his snow blower. No gasoline and no key. I would have helped him with some fuel but I had only mix for my small machine and his was four-stroke.

Another instance of a dropped GPS signal taking me on a wild ride off trail, adding about 6 km of distance. The actual distance for the workout was 29.64 km, not 35.90 km. I was able to manually correct the distance in Running Ahead and Sporttracks.
More traffic today, even at 6:45. Still, I could see some stamps of approval left by the many deer in the area and also, like yesterday morning, enjoyed the call of a barred owl. Towards the end, the very top of the climb of Willow Creek Loop started to turn into mashed potatoes. Very much hoping for that refresher snow event and hoping that it is at the higher end of the forecast.
Good workout, not as intense as yesterday. Worked on my V2 on the flats, gentle uphills and on the short, steeper climb behind the play area. Feel like it's coming along but I am not happy with my upper body strength. I guess I will have to start spending some time in the gym. Did not see any friendly faces till the very end, when I met Andy's neighbor Richard in the parking lot as I was leaving. He had roller skied with us a couple of times last summer.

Second attempt at maiden flight of my DJi Mavic Pro drone, this time I did not forget my mobile. Stability and ease of use are impressive. As is the image quality. When the drown hovers and the video looks like a still image. Also much quieter than other drones I have tried. Best of all, it folds up and fits in a backpack! Mellie did not mind it but Roux was being a scaredy-dog. Have to work on learning all the functions now.

Good time to go, when everyone is watching the Vikes (lose, as I later found out). Running a few errands, needed at least a start to my weekly dose of bananas. Regular bananas were cleaned out, completely, fortunately there were a few organic ones left. No buttermilk, either but I am used to that, got kefir instead. Walked in a sweatshirt with a fleece vest, still above freezing and little wind.
