Hyland Man-made Classic Workout
7:39 AM; Hyland Park Reserve

Good workout at Hyland with Karl. Quiet when we started, super busy by the time we left. Saw Bruce, Kitty, Mo, Eric, Jamie and Anatoly. Just a lovely morning, but when we were driving home, the temp was above freezing. Whatever we have in terms of snow will take a hit in the next few days. broke the strap on my camera when I pulled it out to take a pic. I fiddled to attache the strap to my bag. During one of the following laps, I thought to myself, "That looks familiar" when I saw something black lying in the snow. it was my Garmin Tempe sensor that had slipped off the strap and fallen into the snow ...

Mild walk, no hat and only light gloves. Saw my distant neighbor Lisa walking her dog. she lives with her twin sister Lynn and I'm embarrassed I can't keep them apart. Told her as much and she said "I'm the one always walking the dog." I asked "what about in your backyard?" She said "forget it." I guess I'll keep being embarrassed.

No logging a fast walk to and from Green Line, today. Worked from home in the morning and participated in the Target law departments volunteer event at Sabathani Community Center, serving a holiday luncheon to the elderly of the surrounding community. Like last year a fun event. I ended up being roped in as a photographer; it was very fun to interact with the participant and catch up with colleagues I only see at this event.
Today I used udder balm again on Roux's paws, he ran happily over heavily treated pavement without stopping to lick or lift his feet. I'll have to wait to do the same in colder temps to come to a final judgment.

An eventful morning. First, Mellie decided to go AWOL during our walk around the premises. After feeding, we always leave the yard through the gate by the garage and walk the sidewalk around our corner lot to the front gate. Roux is generally ahead to the gate because of his thinner coat, making him want to get back in the house. Mellie, on the other hand, likes to sniff things out and lags behind. She almost always lets herself back into the yard by pushing through the spring-loaded gate but not this morning. After 5 minutes, I went to check and of course she was gone. Over the next 45 minutes, I went out a few times to check, call and whistle for her, not a chance. I decided to make the rounds in conjunction with heading for the train, starting with the dead-end alley between Holton and Pascal, a favorite with many trash bins. I hadn't even gotten to the alley when I saw her and she happily came to me. I just hope that she did not indulge in an inordinate amount of garbage. On the train, there was a guy who was jogging back and forth, nonstop from one end of the carriage to the other. It wasn't bothering me, not at all annoying like someone playing music loud or talking on the phone at high volume. But one guy was annoyed and called called it in, I felt an overreaction. The ironic part was that the guy left the train with the complainer at the Government Center station.

Roux seems to be just fine walking on salted roads after putting udder balm on his paws. Easier to put on than booties and more comfortable for him.

Short one, wanted to put the xmas tree in the stand, which I did. Dogs were not all too happy but Roux got a dose of udder balm on his paws. We'll repeat tomorrow to see if it works also on the longer walk.

Finally reunited with Tuesday Metro East group at Hyland. All those young guy are putting me in my place. While I think I ski as well as I ever have, I can not keep up with them.
Frogtown is open now. First interval was from Jan's Place to the top of Frogtown loop, four times. Followed by four times just the Frogtown loop. My V2 is coming along and is sustainable from a cardio perspective. But my upper body is not strong enough. I guess I have to hit the gym occasionally. Another issue I have been noticing is some minor cramping in my calves. Awesome workout.

But booties or rather socks on Roux to protect his paws from salted sidewalks. The same type they use for sled dog marathons like the Iditarod. Hilarious, how he traipses around, not quite know what to make of those things on his feet. He does not like them but the salt is quite painful on his paws. He very quickly lost three of the four socks when he got off leash, I closely studied the one remaining one to see what I did right.

Sunrise ski, chillier the yesterday morning. To extend the 1.5 km or so of the open trails, I added the practice area. I did notice my tired legs, glutes and shoulders from yesterday's effort. It was very quiet when I started and gradually, skiers were coming in. inserted a loop of no pole and one of double poling. Only person I knew was club mate Joseph A. Just what the doctor ordered on this cold but beautiful Sunday morning.

The obligatory but nevertheless much cherished walk with my canines. It's a good way to loosen the tense muscles after a workout and enjoy the antics of the dogs. The sun packed some warmth, beating down on me. Fearing for that thin snowpack.
