Much cooler than yesterday, almost chilly, seasonal, I guess. Not cold enough to refreeze wet spots on the trail. I think even the last bump of ice was gone from Dinkytown Greenway.. Rode slower and enjoyed the morning light.

Baseball game in full swing, did a quick stop on CLT to snap a pic of the spectators heads peeping out from the nosebleed section. Then another escapade down to the service road for the UMN steam plant to check out the high water from there. On oldster was just getting back into his truck with his pooch, we exchanged a few pleasantries and our aw over the river's might. I went to a couple of spots to take pictures, the last one near the gate of the new UMN steam plant. I climbed over a railing onto a viewing platform and noticed a memorial to the student who had been found dead in this location a few years ago. Sad, He was aged between my two boys. On the way back up, I saw the old guy picking up garbage, doing his good deed. On Como, I caught up with my buddy from work, who must have left a little after me. Had not seen him in the locker room today but his bike was still hanging in the bike room. Back home, I was ready to get going with the dogs when Lynn called James and asked if we'd want to go to eat out with Colin. So the pooches went out empty tonight because the fam was eating out. Instead of a workout I ate way too much.

Lovely spring weather and a nice tailwind, except for Downtown and southbound Snelling. Saw my colleague at the bike room who start out in the same direction. I leave a couple minutes before him but he takes a shorter route. Always a question where I catch him. Caught him at the beginning of the campus connector this time in spite of stopping to take a picture of the falls again.

Missed my train by a minute or so and kept riding along University Ave. This route would be great if it wasn't for the many traffic lights which frustrate drivers and cyclists alike. I made it to the Westgate Station where I had enough time to top off my Metro Transit GoCard, I assume for the last time till next winter.

Lovely afternoon. Roux was going berserk in our backyard, because occasional guest golden retriever Dude was next door and those two love barking, snarling at each other and running along the fence. The walk was subdued except when I rabbit jumped up right by Snelling. Luckily, it evaded the dogs under a pile of RR equipment instead of heading for the tracks or Energy Park Drive.

Excellent downtown and CLT stretch, made all the lights. Unfortunately, I failed to turn on my Garmin. Noticed it when I wanted to check my split before getting to River Rd. Still a little ice on Dinkytown Greenway but not enough to scare me off for an early morning commute tomorrow.

Route is drying out. Still a couple of icy spot on Dinkytown Greenway near pedestrian bridge. Other than that it's almost ready for a frosty ride in. We'll see tomorrow. Stopped on Stone Arch Bridge for a picture of the melt-water swollen Mississippi going over the falls. Always an awesome view.

3/4 on ice, 1/4 on shore. The snow crust bore me easily in most places and the ice was as hard as glass. Relentless wind, 25-35 km/h from NE. The ice did not budge, Madeline must be providing a good seawall. Surprised to see a number of ice fishermen out counted 8 to 10 parties.

On-ice Walk NE of Onion River
6:41 AM; Washburn, WI

-2.4 °C; Clear
Beautiful eastern sky on this cold morning. The hard freeze had solidified the slush on top of the ice, but I managed to break through right off our beach and started the walk with one moist foot. Chatted with one fisherman who had drilled his hole right outside the flume of the Onion. He told me that bait fish are hiding in the muddy water coming from the Onion and that the large fish are looking for them. Then we headed straight for the South Channel, the gap between Madeline and Long Islands. Not to get there, it's 7 km one way, just to have a a direction. Dogs were always far ahead, Mellie not even looking at me, Roux making sure I was still there. After 2 km, we headed for the house where the owner plunged 12 m to her death, it had a frozen waterfall right next to it. Once there, we followed the bluff back to the Onion, taking many pictures. By now, the lake was getting pretty busy with snowmobiles, fourwheelers and walkers heading for their fishing spots. Everyone wants to catch a few fish before the ice breaks up.

Changing batteries and memory cards on trail cams. Very little action for the past 6 weeks, mostly shadows of wind-blown trees triggering the exposures.

Onion to Sioux River On-ice

Walked on the ice towards Sioux River, as recommended by Mike, with Lynn and dogs. In many places, there was just a thin crust on top of slush. Enough to bear the dogs but not for us. Still much easier going than on shore. Mellie wiped out once on glare ice and was hobbling for a few minutes but recovered. She and Lynn turned back at Friendly Valley Beach because she had a work call. Roux and I made it to the mouth of the Sioux. The Sioux is ice free but the slough is still covered. We made it back before Lynn, who had met Dan, a regular guest at one of our neighbors.
