Old Cedar Avenue Bridge
10:01 AM; Minnesota River Bottoms

9.1 °C; Chance of rain
Wanted to check out the newly repaired Old Cedar Ave Bridge after being done meeting our accountant for taxes 2018. First thing she did when she met me at her door was look at my shoes and pants, saying "You're not wearing your running clothes." Indeed, it was just a quick one, flooding prevented a longer walk. I chatted with a birder, who was just returning to his car when we arrived. He said that earlier in the week, the water was going over the bridge and a walker had disregarde fence, signs and water and been swept away. Fortunately, she was able to call for help on her mobile. We disregarded fence and sign but there was no more water going over the bridge. Short but good exploratory walk!

Como Golf Course

No Mellie, she decided to call it a day after this morning's short excursion at the Old Cedar Ave Bridge. Instead we had Karl for company. Roux thoroughly enjoyed his off leash time. Most of the ice and snow is gone from Como Golf Course, even the Glacier. As usual, the pump is running to keep the pond in the southern "Glacier" portion of the golf course from getting out of hand. I figured that this portion of the area must be below the level of Como Lake. For the heck of it, I checked the MN DNR's LIDAR map, sure enough, there would be a sizable lake if the level would be the same as that of Como Lake, with another one N of the club house. Enjoyable walk.

Temps this week were -1, -1, -1, +1, +2 °C. In spite of this morning being the warmest, it did not feel all that warm. Fog, a light mist and wet pavement, not wet enough for any significant road spray. Less than a dozen cyclists out. At TPC, they closed the front door, final preparations for the Final Four are in full swing.

Nice walk, very little wind. The soft ground feels nice underfoot but I am ready for the mud season to be over, especially when letting the dogs back into the house. You think you've removed every last bit from under their paws and then they go for a drink. After that, black paw prints all over the kitchen floor. Had a train go by on the way down the pedestrian bridge ramp at Hamline. Just the right speed to count the cars. Around 110 of them.

Seemed this was the right day to take the shorter route across the city, because of various road closures related to Final Four. Bad idea. I did not consider that the event will take place at the football facility, not where they typically play basketball. So I had quite a time to weave my way through detours and bad traffic. Good to know for Monday, when it will be even crazier. After I was out of downtown, the ride was as usual and quite pleasant. I rarely cross someone for the only piece I take a sidewalk, going S on Snelling along the bridge across the various railroad lines and Energy Park. Today, I avoided being confronted by the Hamline U XC or track team. But that was just the guys. Met the gals in the middle of the bridge, but they did a very nice single file when we crossed each other, better than the ROTC soldier boys at the U.

Above freezing this morning. I did not notice it, must have had a helping hand from the wind on the ride in. But then, you never really notice a tailwind while even a very mild headwind is very noticeable. 10th is closed to cars for the last block and one half to TPC, because of the upcoming Final Four events. A Ferris wheel is sitting right in the middle of the 10th and Nicollet Mall intersection.

Just below freezing, but dry pavement throughout. Stopped on Stone Arch Bridge to marvel at the water's might. Another SNAFU in the locker room. Yesterday, I left my key card in the bike room and could not get in, today, I could not unzip my jacket. I had pulled off the zipper pull while pulling it up while dressing for the cold before leaving. Somehow, there is a blockage when not using the pull that prevents the zipper from opening. I could not pull the jacket over my head because the opening was to tight. Ended up going back down to the bike area to borrow a marking pin from the map showing where people come from. Used it as a stand-in for the pull, it worked. Made sure I put a paper clip as replacement in my bike bag.

Didn't want to expose my wet body to the strong winds I'd encounter on the open stretches of Energy Park and the road spray along Snelling. So we made it a short one, through the campus.

Setting up for the final four is in full swing on Nicollet Mall. They were in the process of setting up some sort of ride right in the intersection of 10th and Nicollet. Once I turned NE on CLT, the strong westerly wind provided a welcome boost. It started raining as I emerged from under Target Field and rain turned into sleet on the Campus Connector. Back in full sun while riding on Snelling. I guess I had my first taste of April showers.

Warmer than yesterday morning, no complaints about that, but a little dusting of snow in the areas that don't get much sun in daytime. Not enough to make conditions slippery but I exercised caution anyway. Some Navy ROTC exercising on Dinkytown Greenway, the usual runners and cyclist, otherwise less traffic than usual. Needed to take my badge out of my bag to gain access, it had shifted in my bag and I couldn't get it close enough to the reader. Since it was out, I promptly forgot it in the bike room and had to ask the security guard to let me in to retrieve it.

We picked up Karl on the way out. Nice to catch up with him. Sounds like he had a few late skis, one while visiting his mom in Bismark, ND. The goats are out Great River School, I like the unexpectedness of seeing a flock of them next to the school building. We did one of my usual routes along tracks, through State Fair lot and around the light industrial building where Midway stadium used to be. Natural snow is mostly gone, but where snow removed from parking lots and roads is piled up it will be quite some time before it's all gone. A lovely walk!

OK, this wasn't the direct way to target, but the afternoon sun felt so nice, I had to stretch it out a little. Used Shopping bag carriers and the Birkie backpack. The latter served to carry a 12-pack of Summit Keller Pils and a 6-pack of New Belgium Trippel. I would have squeezed in some Summit 120 Shilling if they had had it. Not a problem bringing my haul home. I quickly refurbished a broken mirror because the one I was using had a cracked arm.
