Nice ride in this morning. Air temps were +3 °C but cars were frost covered, due to radiation heat loss. Read up on this and found out that in Persia, they put out water in shallow pans and harvested the ice the coming morning, bringing it into evap cooled structures to keep it from thawing. Refrigeration in a hot country, 400 BC, who would have thought. Full moon was setting in the west, a lovely sight.

Met Joel for a couple of beers. I had a barrel-aged Darkness and a Belgian-style pale ale I can't remember the name. The latter was too much like an IPA, as many surly beers are. But good time catching up with Joel.

Cold and significant wind from NW but drying out. After a late start, I was taking it easy. Decided to check out the potholes of S St. Anthony rather than braving the wind on the more open UMN Transit Way. Potholes are significant between Transfer Rd. and Raymond. Noticing the absence of cyclists, not surprising in light of the rainy forecast and the coldish morning. I contemplated cutting through downtown from the north but opted to stick to my usual route. Slow ride.

Mellie is not feeling well. Not sure if she at something, if she fell down the stairs in our absence or if it's just old age. After yesterday's walk she never moved from her spot at the back door, neither did she this morning . But she was ready to go for a walk. Made it a short one, she seems to feel better now. Nice walk, saw one of Roux's many nemeses along our rout and he wanted a piece of him. Wouldn't let him, though. Nice to have some sun. Found a little bird, a brown creeper that must have flown against a window pane at Hamline. Always sad to see.

Opted to ride home with just my base layer and of course, as soon as I turned onto 11th it started raining. Fortunately only a quick shower, by the time I emerged from under the Twins stadium, it had stopped. Spectacular light made me stop on Northern Pacific #5 to take a photo, which turned out great. Just wish I was able to take one of my SLRs. Had a little help form the wind but didn't push.

First long commute of the season, to Target North Campus. Lovely morning, no wind, crisp and dry. Could have used some boot covers, while it was above freezing, my colds got pretty cold after an hour of riding. Mississippi is not all that high, the path by the Shingle Creek inlet is barely flooded. Saw a couple runners making their way around the water when I went past. Today's highlight was definitely encountering a capital tom, strutting a step away from the trail, just N of 119th Ave. I was kind of lost in thought looking at the pavement a few steps ahead when I suddenly saw him. He looked so perfect and colorful (as much as a black bird can look colorful) that I first thought it was a decoy. But it moved and thought "Not a Franken-turkey, it's alive!" I stopped to take a pic which I am convinced will not do justice to my initial impression.

A little tired from the longish rides today but enjoying this lovely evening. A walk with the dogs is the right thing to recuperate from a good workout and a day at work!

It felt even warmer than predicted. Because I only had my heavy long-sleeved base layer as an option, I purchased a company tee at the company store. Turned out to be a good investment, it was warmer than forecast. Wind wasn't a factor, during the first half, I averaged almost 30 km/h. I don't hit the downtown area this late, rush hour was in full swing and the beautiful weather had many walkers out. I told one guy who was still riding studded tires that it's time to put them in storage, he agreed. I smiled at a girl on roller blades who was being pulled by her boyfriend on a bike and she just beamed at me. I lovely young maid passed me on a racing bike and thanks to a bus and light combination, I caught up with her and shamelessly drafted until we parted at Como. A great ride, I am ready for this warmer weather and glad I got this ride in before two days of rain.

Lovely morning for a ride. Was a little worried about frozen puddles. Indeed, on the expressway-like portion of Snelling, between Pierce Butler and Como, there was some ice on pavement. fortunately, little traffic. On UMN Transit Way, I saw emergency vehicles from afar, many of them, their lights flashing. As I drew near, I saw smoke, too. It was at Malcolm, at the access to Surly (not at Surly). One of the derelict warehouse buildings, Harris Whse & Canvas was affected. No bus would be able to get through but none were waiting. I had to dismount but was able to make it through 10-15 MFD vehicles and many more firefighters. The rest of the ride was uneventful. Just a little more snow on the trails in the shade on W River Rd. and CLT, nothing to slow me down.

Pretty decent but manageable headwind most of the way home. Odd, my timer was paused just as I crossed Raymond Ave via the UMN Transitway bridge. Accidentally stopping the timer sometimes happens when I xc ski or roller ski, when the straps of the poles touch the stop button on my Garmin watch. I was wearing soft gloves today and wonder if bunched up cloth or even a roll of skin from the back of my hand could have done the same. I was working pretty hard at the time to fight the wind. Who knows. Very little snow left but some wet spots where water is running across trail and roads. No frost is forecast, so I should have a good ride to Brooklyn Park tomorrow!

Another long option, parked freight was preventing us crossing the rails at our usual spot under the UMN campus connector bridge. Did not want to take the risk that the train was going to start moving just as I crawled underneath. Instead, we crossed the rail by using said bridge. Dogs greeted a woman runner, without bothering her. Then onto the fair parking lot, which is still largely snow covered. Roux was not very cooperative today. At the print shop off Snelling, he insisted on waiting out a rabbit that had taken refuge from him under a container. Then, at the Oscar Johnson Arena, he ended up on the wrong side of the fence and wouldn't come back to me when I called him to a hole he had missed. He eventually figured out there wasn't another place to cross back. We said hi to the goats and chickens a Great River School.
