Quick walk along the beach with Roux. The devastation of the higher lake levels are obvious.

Onion River to Bodin's Resort
3:08 PM; Washburn, WI

1.3 °C; Snow
Decided on one last kayak outing (maybe, we've got another day :-), taking advantage of this above freezing day without wind. Stopped at the Sioux slough to check out the ice thickness, then noticed some large icicles between the old fish house and Bodin's resort. Went a little past Bodin's Resort and started my way back. Noticed that the point where my acquaintance Carl's family cabin (sleeps 36!) is and the tall pine north of the Sioux that is being eroded line up perfectly. Pushed the tempo on the way back. When I got to the long open area between Friendly Valley and Baview Park Beach, I noticed a little figure with a dark dog. Thought that it might be Lynn with Mellie but it was Luke with the holstein dog Ray (called so by me because he is black & white in that pattern). We chatted about the upcoming construction project at our place, he thought they'd start after new year. Powered home and was glad to get out of the hermetically sealed sweat bag.

McCulloch-Friendly Valley Loop
9:39 AM; Washburn, WI

-4.3 °C; Cloudy
Time for a bigger BC hike with Roux. Started along McCulloch, then followed the top of the Onion River valley to the clearcut. Went up the usual forest track to Smith Fire Lane. Logging in process, we hiked along the eastern edge of the logged area to the trail that goes east to Potter Rd, but before getting there, we went down a ravine which turned into the valley that we'd follow to Friendly Valley Rd. Quite a struggle to get through the mess where the power company cleared trees and brush under the overland line. Crossed Friendly Valley Rd. and followed the Sioux River as long as we could. Along Friendly Valley to the Lake, then onto the RR grade towards Bayview Park. From there home, along the beach. As always a fun adventure!

Onion to Sioux River plus Back 40
7:06 AM; Washburn, WI

-6.2 °C; Snow
Started by switching batteries and SD cards in trail cams, then headed for the Sioux. The fall storms did a number on the brush and tree screen between lake and wetland. many more trees down, evidence of breaches. A tall pine has half of its roots exposed, wouldn't be surprised if it's gone before the winter even starts. Light snow during the entire hike, water temp in Onion 1.8 °C, in lake (away from any inlet) 4 °C and air temp -6 °C. Dogs had a good time sniffing and exploring.

Energy Park Lexington to Snelling
7:46 AM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

-2.6 °C; Cloudy
Only Roux to join me this AM. A dusting of snow on the ground. Tried to follow the chain link fence along the tracks from Bandana Square to Lexington but the shrub land got too thick discovered a bunker or cistern of some type. Maybe one day I'll crawl in.

Started today's walk by stopping in at the Horton Park highrise to do our civic duty by voting. Most important vote was cast as a 'yes' to keep the city-sponsored trash collection scheme. I hope it passes since before city coordination, there were trucks driving through the neighborhood every day. Chilly morning, coldest yet this season, around -6 °C. but bright sunshine and an enjoyable walk.

EU MYR: Hill Bounding Como Golf Course
6:29 PM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

-2.2 °C; Partly cloudy
Second annual hill workout at Como golf course due to prescribed deer hunt at Battle Creek. I missed the first one due to trip to Europe. The Hills are shorter than at BC but steep. The workout included three 10 minute segments. First, the gradual climb along Lexington, then from the bottom of the bowl up the back of the ski hill and lastly up the ski hill. That last one, Margie wanted us to alternate running and bounding. I made four climbs for the first one, 10 for the second one and eight climbs (i.e. four run/bound pairs) for the last one. Always a good workout.

Uneventful ride home. Saw my neighbor Chris just before pulling into our driveway and called a greeting. He came over to tell me that he was just back from Wisconsin, his mom had passed away.

Beans for the week. Nice to be on my own bike again! That bike I rented in Oxford was a lot lighter but the Space Horse just fits!

Mellie was torturing me, whining to be fed. I decided to do the walk first. Snow and sleet mix with a chill westerly wind. Walked along the BNSF main track N of Energy Park. Roux is such a dynamo hopping through the thick vetches, leaving Mellie and me eating his dust.

Brisk morning with Roux. Well behaved pooch, but he rolled in some garbage juice coming out of a container, needed a sponge bath after we got home.
