Beautiful early spring morning. Snowpack greatly diminished, mud on top of frozen ground. Came by an almost picturesque hobo camp, complete with camp kitchen, do not recall seeing this in November, when I last took this route.

Karl had recently hiked to Quarry Island and suggested to do a crust ski on the surrounding Gun Club Lake. Taking advantage of the soft fluff from recent snow falls and the still cold morning temps, we set out. Roux was along, too. Hiked down from the Big Rivers Regional trail parking lot by the lookout point and strapped skis on when we got to the trail leading to Quarry Island. Put Roux on lead when we were on lake. Skied a loop on the northern portion of the lake, then the southern portion, on the other side of 494. Roux pulled me during that first loop, then Karl got to enjoy him for a while. Excellent outing with some adventure flair. A strong southerly wind made skiing a chore without it, it would have been almost too easy!

Approach was different from hiking out, the drainage ditch was not passable on the way back, we jumped down, onto a sandbank on the hike in. Walked along the tracks and crossed ditch on trestle bridge for the way out.

Karl checked in, wondered if I'd join him for an easy day after Birkie workout. Always happy to oblige. Saw EU coach and training director Liz P coming off as we walked on. Couldn't have asked for nicer conditions, bright blue sky freshly groomed trails, 99% excellent coverage. Possibly the penultimate ski on natural snow this season.
