WCOC : Cyprus River, Spruce Woods PP, Manitoba
Middle - Course 7 - 3.9 km - 11 controls....120 m climb
Started watch @ start triangle - walked there from start punch 3rd min (+31 s) Thus official time 1:35:16...)
My first away meet!...Or should I say our first away meet...glad to have Andrew with me ...this course was just at the right level for him as well.
Aside from control 2 I think things went pretty well with only minor blips.
This was the long leg and reconciling the map with the terrain except for the really big features was a challenge for both of us. Since we couldn't "win" any awards being from the east we worked together here after I had gone about 15 minutes on this leg...then we were both good to go our own ways afterwards
4 - probably not the ideal route...and I still acted a slow and cautious but executed my plan (so I won't count that fully spiked)
8-minor blip going up wrong field before getting to ridge to follow as handrail...
1,3,5 (best split), 6 (saw a baby fawn en route to), 7 (few people went in directly from field...branbles/PI), 9,10,11 ...all solid
Best in from the Go control on course 7...only 3 beat me on this one across all courses...yay!
So I'm calling it 8/11 spiked...I'm pretty happy with this...quite a challenge for me n spots.
Position: 4th in M45 (out of 5 :( ), 6th on course 7 (out of 17...7 dnf/mp's)
Andrew missed the first control and was slightly over the time limit so although I think he did great he ends up mp..
Made a few friends at the banquet especially Fritz who was just ahead of me in M45

As for the terrain ...
-tons of poison ivy...you really couldn't go more than 50 m on any route without encountering some...logging now on Tuesday only Andrew seems to have been affected even though we both took precautions and there was a wash up station at the end.
-lots of hills of sand/grass but not as bad as you might think...then again I went slow and deliberate
-spear grass bad but I learned from the training event and my map case shin guards left me unscathed ...unlike yesterday
- heat...hot but worse than the heat was really no shade the course was largely wild open with scattered trees...the flap hat was very handy...Andrew got quite a back of the neck burn...carried water but lots of water on course...should have availed myself but I only used my own ..Andrew drank from the stations...good lad!
Finally I got 91 m climb while the listed climb was 120 m...interesting
