Note

JK reflections.
Not a classic. Not really anyone in particular's fault. It was well organised and planning was OK (ish-the controls were all in the right place). The early Easter and the weather didn't help. I'm assuming the planning on Day 3 was seriously compromised by environmental issues at a late stage. Also it's disappointing that we don't seem to have any say on the timing of forestry works for our premier event. If I was the Planner I'd have been tempted to throw in the towel in such circumstances. It would be interesting to hear at what stage the environmentalists were consulted and when they introduced the constraints. It would also be interesting to hear why Day 3 courses couldn't cross over the road onto Rawnsley Hills and the detailed stuff to the north. It must have been very repetitive running M21E.
Next year doesn't excite me much but it is the JK and I'll be up for it on the day.

Orienteering race 33:13 [3] 3.0 mi (11:04 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

JK Relay, Beaudesert Park.
Leg 3 for SYO M165+ team. 4.2km 145m.
Disastrous day all round. Martin on 1st leg punctured en route and so Chappers stood in at last minute. He lost his dibber taking off his jacket but didn't realise until the first control. He came back and restarted giving the field a 6-7 min head start. Pete did well on 2nd but we were well out of it by then. I took the opportunity to give my Achilles an easier run but still made a few errors, mostly after I'd fallen over and my map (and glasses) were covered in mud.
My Achilles seemed OK today, probably because I never got up to any sort of speed. However my R calf was very tight so I'll need to be careful. A few days off running needed anyway.

Orienteering race 1:03:57 [4] 7.0 mi (9:08 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

JK Day 3. Beaudesert.
M50L, 9.8km 245m.
3rd on the day, 2 mins down on James. 2nd overall.
Somewhat disappointing course. Lots of mindless (muddy) track running with pretty simple navigation. Achilles not too bad to start with but sore later, particularly on the long downhill track legs (#11 and #16 - what was that all about?). No major time losses just the odd wobble and plenty of hesitations.

Trail running 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

Some warming up and minimal warm down.

Orienteering race 37:22 [4] 3.5 mi (10:41 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

JK Day 2, Brereton Spurs.
M50L, 5.0km 250m.
2nd (+12 seconds to James Logue).
Shoe choice based on best for Achilles but not ideal on the slippery muddy slopes. Minced down all the steep hills. Navigationally pretty good. Two significant times loses: #1 overshot not seeing the veg boundary and #7 got the wrong route choice (up and around the path).

Trail running 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

Decent warm up and down. Achilles not brilliant but trying to minimise damage and maximise chances of running tomorrow.
