Reflections on the 6 Days:
Overall results:
https://www.scottish6days.com/results/2019/multist...
Not sure if these are 'official' or not, but they show Alistair and I tied for 1st place. Not what was announced at the prizegiving...

Either way I can't help being a little disappointed with my performances. 2 great runs (Day 3 and 5), otherwise pretty mediocre. Al definitely deserved the overall win for a number of reasons:
1. He was more consistent over the week.
2. I benefited from the mangling of the Day 2 results (and my extra late start).
3. He ran Day 4 and then did Day 5 on his own, while I got lucky with a gamble route choice through the dark green.

However I'd have taken 2nd overall at the beginning of the week.

My Achilles is still not right. I've been taking 2 ibuprofen before running every day and the soreness has increased as each day has gone on. I now need to give it a chance to settle down properly.

Day 6, Grandtully.
M50L, 4.0km 100m.
So, before I started I had calculated (by the published rules) that I couldn't finish worse than first equal. For me not to win outright either Al L or Niklas would need to win today. I could only improve my score if I finished either first or second.

I started ok (except for a little detour en route to #1) and was a minute up on Al at #10. Then it fell apart. I lost confidence on the way to #11 but nearly rescued things when I found the control in the pit just short of our control. However I still missed the control (I ended up in the clearing on the NW edge of the circle). Not finding the control I lost confidence that I was anywhere near the right place. After a short wander around I decided my race was over (i.e. no chance of 1st or 2nd ). Bailing out to relocate I bumped into Marky and decided to follow him to the control. I then jogged the rest of the course. Al ran well to take the win.

At the prizegiving I was wondering if there was sufficient room on the top of the podium for both me and Alistair only to be announced in 2nd place. Apparently the organisers made up a new rule to split ties using your 5th best score. Whatever. ...

Day 5, Craig a Barns.
M50L, 7.4km 330m.
Really really happy that I missed Day 4 now :)
Picked up 007 at #1 and then Si P at #6. Then (mostly) led the train to the finish. Only miss was at #6 where I stopped early because of an unmapped thicket just before the control (1 min). Very happy to take the win off a pre-11am start.

Orienteering 35:00 [3] 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

Decided to give today a miss. Too fast for me (and my Achilles in particular). Hopefully the decision will pay off over the next two days.
Jogged to the start to pick up my map and back through controls #12 to the finish.

Note
(rest day)

Needed. Couldn't even face a round of golf. Contemplating giving tomorrow a miss as well. The area won't suit me and my Achilles won't appreciate the increased speed necessary to achieve a decent result.

Day 3, Dundurn.
M50L 3.8km 165m.
Really enjoyed this. No controversy today. Only time loss was on #5. Left #4 in wrong direction then got stuck in windblow to the east of the control (1 min). 1st place.

Day 2. Edinchip.
M50L, 6.8km 240m.
Punching start again (thanks to Pauline's insistence that we got some reward for our 4 hours labour yesterday). Didn't take full advantage but managed respectability at least. Picked up Duncan H early on and had a tussle for the rest of the course. Lost concentration towards the end and lost track en route to #13 binning around 2 mins. Also took the wrong choice on the dodgy route choice to #14 binning another 1.5 mins (more to those who went straight).
Finished 4th, 3.5 mins down on Niklas Ronneback (who won in 2017).
Took 2 ibuprofen tabs today. Achilles no worse than yesterday.

Edit: so the results have now been bastardised. Split from #13 to #14 removed. The result is that Duncan H who I caught 1 min and finished with is now in 2nd with me 13 seconds behind in 3rd. There must be a very bemused Swede somewhere who has now been relegated. ...
