Road bike 2:10:00 [2] 32.0 mi (4:04 / mi)
shoes: Shimano AM9 MTB SPD

Middleton Park didn't seem very attractive after yesterday. Also not worth the risk racing two days in a row. Apologies AIRE.
New Mill, Flouch, Green Moor, Penistone, TPT, Hades. Heavy rain in the Holme Valley but dry everywhere else.

I couldn't resist the drive to the Lakes for the 2nd consecutive weekend for what is a fantastic area. I last ran here in 1998 (Lakes 5 Day) but have memories going back to the late 70's. Unsurprisingly the amount of detail on the map has increased as the scale has evolved from 1:15k through 1:10k and now to 1:7.5k. I'm not complaining; it just added to the fun.

Early start to break tracks for the real Elites so virtually had the place to myself. Just passed Nick L (4 mins) at #10. Should really have had him at #9 but got distracted and had a 1 min wander in the green to the north of the control. Also lost time on #2 (relocated on #6), #5 (too far south) and #17 (just couldn't work out the detail). Probably 4-5 mins binned in total but it could easily have been so much worse. Horrified to see the times achieved by the real Elites (around 35 mins). I'd take 15 mins down but I guess this sort of terrain (overgrown limestone pavement) slows us oldies down disproportionately. I'll have to settle for finishing in one piece.

Edit: it sounds like there was a lot of head-to-head racing later on. Not surprising with 2 min start intervals. I reckon this is another reason why I was so far down.

Trail running 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue) 2

Warm up in the car park field plus to the start. Warm down back from finish and back to the start to pick up Helly.
