Running (Downtown) 43:07 [3] 4.5 mi (9:35 / mi)
shoes: Wave Nirvana 3

Steve and I braved the 12° temperature with a slight North wind. We had not run the Downtown loops in 5 or more weeks. At least not together. My hams were sore, perhaps from the rolling hills of Georgia, and aggravated by our brisk run Tuesday on the bike-path.

A month ago today, Christmas Eve, my dear niece, Emily Hopf, a PT, was coaxed into giving me an analysis. She pushed and bent on me with a gentile manner. Family looked on as I lie on a couch submitting to her working arms, driving my limbs through motions I have not entertained in any recallable memory. It was not a time to be vain or proud, I was quite anxious to hear her assessment. I believe in and wanted learn what could be done to stop the pain I have been feeling these past six months.

She told my I was suffering from a lack of flexibility, that I was doing the exact things necessary to keep my hamstrings in a constant state of inflammation, and nothing to correct or prevent the condition. So Now I was both a circus act and a subject of ridicule in front of my wife's entire family. Oh joy.

She could prepare and provide a regimen of stretches and activities that I could do on my own which, presumably, would set me on the road to improvement. Yes! I am elated and looking forward to her advice, having pirated her time and knowledge, the news will be my highest priority to digest. Then things began to happen.

My life was hijacked by a series of known and unplanned events. 10 days of fighting an infernal flu virus, 8 days of traveling, a week of field checking and course designing. And then there is life, that thing we do, it dominates our time with mundane activities like eating, sleeping, and communing with our spouses and extended family and friends. Bottom line, here we are, 31 days later, an email message in my inbox, dated 12/27/12, containing a detailed plan to health and physical prosperity, yet unopened, unviewed, unread, and otherwise not implemented. Had I started 4 weeks ago, might I be improving today? To whom do I complain? Who are our worst enemies?

Alright, I have laid it on the line. Now you know. I'm going to go stretch now. Don't bother me. I'll report back later.

Running (Bike Trail) 47:33 [3] 5.0 mi (9:31 / mi)
shoes: Wave Nirvana 3

It has been 4 weeks since I last did any road running or training. Not by plan, but just a series of unforeseen circumstances. Steve and I last ran together on Christmas Eve. I was gone the days after Christmas, he was gone the week after that. It snowed, I was tied up with field checking and course planning for a week, then came down with the flu; that was 10 days out. Then Steve and I were out of sync on run days; I had Orienteered on a Saturday, he ran Friday/Sunday. So finally I ended with a three day trip to the Navigator Cup,with a day's rest, I was ready for a Tuesday run.

Unfortunately mother nature threw us a curve with predicted morning temperatures at about 5° - wind chills in the minuses. So we agreed on a 2 PM run when the temperatures were about 17°, sunny, and less windy. It was nice. I actually stripped my hat, gloves, neck band, and rolled up my sleeves. But of course, once we stopped, it was cold again in less than a minute.
