Oceania Middle - Beechworth Gorge

Felt sore and crappy in the morning, back stiff and sore. Did a decent warm up for a change to try to get it mobile.

Very easy leg to get us started, then I was in the groove until leaving #5 where instead of leaving the spur NE, I planned to go E but ended up going S. Recovered from that OK, but lost time.

Then I thought I was pretty good until the penultimate control where I couldn't spot the preceding crag and ended up too high, losing another minute.

Ended up 4 minutes behind Greg, 2 behind 2/3rd and the pack, which was annoying.

Oceania long Kangaroo Crossing

Hot by the time I got to the start. Despite thinking about this race a lot, I was dodgy at #1, think I went up a wrong side gully to attack #2, spent ages making the wrong bit of map fit (lots o rocks), then had a mare at #3.

After that I wasn't confident at all, missing a little at the end of the long leg to #5 (otherwise OK) and being over conservative to #12.

Bugger and Jemery beat me by 16 seconds AGAIN, same margin as Aus champs.

Mens B Connorton
Hard granite terrain. Small miss at 3, bigger at 4 and completely blew #12, losing contact on longish leg across 3 valleys and a heap of detail. Should have simplified. Lesson for Saturday.

Legs v tired.

Collecting controls, struggled with 119, like mum and Lyra.

Walk up to the summit of "The Rock"

Got back my quad soreness.
12 PM

orienteering race 20:28 [3] 3.05 km (6:43 / km) +12m 6:35 / km
shoes: Hoka OneOne Bondi 6

Kind of long ultrasprint. Didn't get full contact with the 1:2000 map, but at least I ran out some of the muscle tiredness in my quads.

Aus champs relay - 1st leg for NSW M55 - Split Rock

Compounded my poor route choice for #1 with messing up the leg - 12+ minutes for first control. Ran down wrong line of rock way too far, found other #1 and my #2 but didn't realise, found #2 again, then realised. Bugger.

After that I was just picking my way through the field, came in about 4 minutes down behind NZ, Tas, ACT, Qld, NSW2 (?), but ahead of Aus team, Jemery having lost his SI stick and gone back to #1 from #2 to find it/punch map.

Shingo and Tony had steady and fast runs respectively, and we grabbed 2nd place behind NZ, ahead of Aus team.

Aus Champs - Split Rock
Strongest field for me at an Aus champs for a long time and great area. Planning wasn't great though.

Steady start, then managed to do something odd en route to #5 after dud leg out into the paddocks. I think it was just a gross undershoot. After a bit of trying to make the map fit, I dithered went back to fence and still couldn't figure it. Saw Greg going slowly up the hill beyond me and it clicked that I was a whole hill earlier than I thought. Ran past Greg with a bit of Kiwi baiting, and we raced the rest of the course together.

There was one really hard leg on the course - I lost contact, ran behind Greg and picked up where I was as he attacked the control going downhill. I looked up the hill saw the control. Some epic blowouts on the leg.

Run hard through the rest of the course, some minor mistakes.

4th, 4 minutes down on Greg, 2 minutes on Scotty and 16 seconds on bloody Jem, but near top of the pack - 90 second between 3rd and 8th I think.

Oceania Sprint, Charles Sturt Uni
Not really switched on to the program - this turned out to be a bush + campus sprint. Decided to try the Speed Goats and they were fine.

Steady start, wrong level at #3, but otherwise fairly clean until I caught Simon 2 minutes at #12. He went N to #13, as I went S and beat him. Then back into the start "clearing" at #14 and I lost the plot, misreading where the control was. Then messay at #16 and messed up #17 which seemed to have wrong control description (not sure if that was the source of my initial error).

Kind of frustrating, but I just wanted the leg stretch and it was good for that.
