The long today - 4.7km v 4.5 for yesterday's middle. Fewer controls.
[Edit RG: http://www.matrace.fr/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=ma...]

Again I'm looking forward to the RG. Very conservative route to #1 then let myself down by not concentrating from attackpoint (top of nearby hill). Bounced off fence twice and saw Shingo.

Together to #2 with a Jeannie Foreigner, Mark better than me. Split up part way to #3, where I was able to actually navigate to the control circle (and lost under a minute there).

Feeling that I'd cracked Shingo, he caught me up again en-route to #4 as I slowed. Both a bit messy going into that control, but planning a good route to #5 was hard. Eventually located a wall near #6, and then got #5,#6 cleanly !

Ran generally right way for #7 and got lucky as I ran below the gully. #8 was easier than it looked, then completely messed up #9, didn't find any of the cliffs on the map, even after I eventually followed Edwards junior and got the control after a fence relocate.

Bit disappointed about #1 and #9, but was starting to read the mapping a bit better. Beat Quentin again and Big Jon spat the dummy (over the dumb larger scale maps I guess) and was a DNS.

Jalonne.
GPS'd it so that I could see what Lyra's interval-like pacing actually is.

I'd like to turn technical intensity up to 11 please.

(Edit: RG: http://www.matrace.fr/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=ma... - zoom out a bit for realism

Just saw that I was only a couple of minutes behind Jon Musgrave despite having a major outing.)

So first 3 days were interesting, but sometimes because the change in map scale to 1:10000 and the increased detail made map v hard to read. In H50 EVERYONE except Quentin had had a 10 minute blow-out at least once after 3 days.

Then we went south to the hard area...

This was what I had been waiting for for 8 years. The larger scale map and my deteriorating eye-sight made this harder than last time. Also the planning - looking at courses from 2008, we had less through the bush.

Set out to go carefully to #1 and managed to lose contact, so reset. Actually did OK on some controls after I started to use the magnifier a lot, but was kind of surprised when they popped up as I usually had less than 70% confidence in where I was.

So, messy, but not as bad as it could have been. Really enjoyed the challenge. Looking forward to seeing it on RouteGadget.

orienteering race 51:36 [3] 6.3 km (8:11 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#4 - blue)

Complete shocker, from first to last control I butchered almost all of them. Just not being careful in the green, and not using the strategy I'd got (#10).

Different terrain and mapper after the rest day.

run 12:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#4 - blue)

Run to start. Obviously wasn't focused on right things. Still beer at the end and going to watch the tour this arvo.

(Edit RG: http://www.matrace.fr/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=ma...)

Wet, so should play to my strengths (no glasses).
Went out of the start very fast (downhill on a track), made extensive use of tracks (2,3,5).

Probably lucky at 5 - found a rock column I couldn't locate, ploughed on in low vis but passable green then realised v late that control was down big hole, not on hill, ran down towards bottom of control and saw feature.

Missed 6 - should have followed elephant track instead of navigating.

Lucky again at 9, navigated in, realised I didn't know where I was in thick green and headed downhill towards yellow, but found elephant track with the enormous rock faetures and control.

Running to 12, I realised that I might crack 40', which was leading time when I started, so thrashed myself to get lost in green again near 13 and had to head out to yellow to relocate.

Pretty pleased with that - coming 2nd by 5 seconds when I left, Quentin was 3rd and Jon M was a few minutes behind me.

May have saved my chance of making chasing start.

Day 1.
[Edit: RG http://www.matrace.fr/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=ma...]
Got to start with 10 minutes to spare and realised I had forgotten my magnifier.
Happily area was pretty open and the course seemed fairly straighforward at first, until I missed #7 and lost 10 minutes. Took an aggressive route into it, intending to relocate, but struggled with the map. Made 5 attacks on it (I think). Barry lost 50 minutes in the same scrap of bush, it may have had some mapping irregularity. Or maybe I just didn't see the control.

Lost time at #8 as well, just discombobulated after debacle at #7, otherwise just 15 seconds here and there on route choice/getting stuck.

Winner took 46' !!

Good news: beer available at the finish.

run 10:00 [2] 1.2 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#4 - blue)

Run to start... fortunately Lyra didn't want to run to the start or round the Jalonne course ("ear ache"), so I got 3 k of walking to worm down instead of walk-sprinting.

Sunday Jul 10, 2016 #

run 14:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#4 - blue)

Warm up and run back to be dog-watcher straight after finishing.
10 AM

orienteering race 16:56 [3] *** 3.28 km (5:09 / km) +16m 5:02 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#4 - blue)

Prologue - sprint at Nant

Fairly straight-forward course, lost time after road-crossing, think I lost concentration as the marshal talked to me. So then missed obvious route and bumbled to #13 en route to #10. Then messed up #11 as well, being dumb.

Looks like almost 2 minutes of mistake from the GPS. Doh !
Will be peanuts compared to the rest of the week, I suspect.

Run on training map (Mont Merdous) with Bazza.

Beautiful area, amazing rocks. Not in danger of getting a false sense of confidence after the outing though.

Takeaways:
1) Its worth going around to avoid areas with green, its impenetrable.
2) Control sites well hidden (may be better in competition)
3) When there is no rock, reading contour direction can be hard/confusing
4) Big rocks stand out and are useful
5) The open areas a really, really fast, on 1:7500, you go places fast
