The Cascades - North - Course 7 (M50)
Wow, 3rd place in the Aus Middle Champs on a technical granite map, whatever next!? Not great on 1 like a lot of people, ending up too high and finding a control that wasn't mine. Took it really steady ticking off bare rock and open areas where I could. Came across Tony Woolford looking for 4 and this was a regular occurrence to 12, as Tony would hare off and then I'd catch him at the control as his routes choices left something to be desired. Needless to say I was very pleased with the result.

Orienteering race (Australian Long Champs) 1:08:51 [4] 7.21 km (9:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 212 (blue & orange)

Amiens - Course 8 (M50)
Didn't feel brave enough to go direct to 1 so headed along the track then down the creek before heading up through the white and then flat rock to the control - phew. Slow to 5 as I wanted to stay in contact with the map and was 3 mins off the pace for this leg. For some reason I convinced myself that 7 was at the end of a watercourse rather than in a depression (it helps to read the control descriptions), so I ran straight past it and followed the creek to the fence so had to retace my steps (2 mins). Happy the with next few especially 11 where I went direct over the hill and thankfully found it. Clawed my way up to 4th at 12 before dropping 4 places at 13 where I took the 'safe' track option only to overrun where I needed to cut in (1'30"). 7th at the finish at the end of a pack of 6 from NSW filling 2nd to 7th.

A wander around the model map to scare me about the next two days.

shoes: Inov8 212 (blue & orange)

Mundoolun - Course 3A (M45)
Absolute shocker completely letting Simon & Ian down. Steady through 1 and 2 and them came across an unmapped track to ther west of 3 running parallel to the fence, not just some recent roo track but a bloody great one that had been there some time. Completely lost confidence as to where I was, not helped by a 90 degree corner on the fence being hidden by the control descriptions. Wasted best part of 25 minutes wandering around in the lantana before finally forcing myself to head east through the open area to find the control, what a debacle. Aftter this the course opened up (read less lantana) and had no real problems.

Orienteering race (Aus Sprint Champs) 17:35 [4] 2.87 km (6:08 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Race Ultra 290

Griffith University Gold Coast Campus - Course 4 (M50)
Ran down to the start triangle and the first thing I see is a building with a sizeable canopy which totally threw me (I hadn't read the blurb saying "most simple canopies attached to buildings not mapped"!!). Once I worked out I was where I thought I was (probably a few seconds but seemed like ages) found my way to 1. A longish leg to 2 which I made a complete hash of (30 secs+). Like most people couldn't read the map at 3 and took a gamble the the 'path' was the black blob on the map and therefore legal. Biggest time loss was on 12 to 13 where I didn't turn left under the canopy ending up near 7 until I realised my error. Jemery caught me here and followed me out of 14 the wrong way into a dead end so had to double back. 6th overall which I was a bit disappointed by.
