Orienteering race (Easter Day 3) 44:17 [4] 7.68 km (5:46 / km)

Crusoe
A very fast, flattish, spur gully map which rounded off a great variety of maps. If you believe Winsplits I had a clean run so this is as good as it gets! Neil P was my 2 minute man and I caught him on the way to #5, however the depression was higher up on the hillside than the map suggested so he sneaked in first. We ran together, but taking different routes to #9, which he overshot, from the direction I was running it was visible from a distance because of the number of plastic cups lying around on the ground. After this it just got faster with the controls relatively obvious. Interestingly my km rate per total distance was slightly faster than Friday's sprint!

Overall a very enjoyable Easter and very pleased to have finished 7th in M50. Another plus was that my back survived the ordeal (including the drives).

Orienteering race (Easter Day 2) 56:57 [4] 6.33 km (9:00 / km)

Mt Alexander.
My worst nightmare of complex granite didn't end up so bad with a good run. Only serious time loss was at #1 where I didn't read the control descriptions properly and refused to accept the control would be at the bottom of the 7m cliff which I assumed was mapped as a solid black blob. Took the advice from the interviews of the early finishers and used the clearings and contour details to navigate and it seemed to work. A brutal 80m climb from #5 to #6 was thankfully followed by a long contour along the hill picking off controls to #10. Finished 6th on the day which I was very pleased with given my previous efforts in this type of terrain.

Orienteering race 1:00:51 [4] 7.22 km (8:26 / km)

Yorkshire Hill - M50 (Course 8)
Complex mining which demanded respect and 100% concentration. Steady throught the first 8 then lost contact going to #9 which was a depression in thicker bush and had to relocate off the hill to the south. David Poland caught me here and we ran together to #17 from where he took the direct, and ultimately quicker, route to #18 whereas I contoured round to the S. Another mistake on #19 where I was looking off the wrong corner of the clearing and again at #20 which was another depression in a vague area in the middle of some green. Ok from there to the finish.

Event: Easter 2013

Orienteering race (Easter prologue) 25:23 [4] 4.39 km (5:47 / km)

La Trobe University campus - Long course (same as Men's Elite).
Given how my back had been the plan was to take it reasonably steady. 6 of the first 8 controls were in the bush which make for a very different expeience. No real time loses but generally slow and sluggish, would have hoped for better if I had been fully fit, as it was I was just over 2 minutes behingd the open winner.
