OHR o-meet
orienteering 37:00 [3]
hmm, where to begin? I ended up getting to the meet late (after registration had closed) so I ended up running the yellow course to kill some time before getting in a little extra training by picking up the green course. The yellow course was harder than I anticipated, mostly due to the 1:12000 enlarged USGS map (circa 1963), with no attempt to update. in addition, the "ah, i think i hung the control...thereish" approach to making a master map was less than ideal. top it off with an AR "Wait, what do you mean it shouldn't take about 1.5 hours on average to run a 3-something k yellow course? whatever, the circle on the map is within about a 100 m or so of the actual control." attitude. talk about frustrating.

So then I went out to pick up 5 controls armed with a master map. I don't know why I bothered with the map. I never found one of the controls, and after a solid 20 minutes bashing around in the rhododendron that was infesting the control circle, I later found out that the course setter had hung the control on a hillside no less than ~120m away. seriously.
