Monday Sep 29

Road Riding 1:00:00 [3] 17.5 mi (3:25 / mi)
Finally got a ride in, starting to get cold out a bit. Trying to lossen legs up after hard week of workouts and races.

Sunday Sep 28

Orienteering Meet race 1:24:20 [5] *** 6.8 km (12:24 / km) +110m 11:28 / km
spiked:12/18c
NAOC Long Champs. Another poor performance. We did have an awesome time Sat. night, great beer, food, company and we had an irish bar with a hgih energy irish band playing on JP's birthday. But the course and woods were extremely nice. It did get hard to read the map as it was so damp in the woods I had to take the glasses off and just go blind most of the time. It was really a great 4 days of orienteering and 2 new circles on my US map on the wall for places I have been for O. I would come back soon and the 12.5 hour drive from Syracause was not to bad. I did get home befroe 1:00AM.

Saturday Sep 27

Orienteering Meet race 1:15:21 [5] ***** 4.1 km (18:23 / km) +98m 16:25 / km
spiked:7/13c
NOAC Middle Champs Salmon River Fish Hatchery.
Ok the rain is coming down, buts its not cold. I decided to dump the reading glasses at the very last minute. Bad mistake. This map was very detailed and hard to read. First 3 controls went good, than it was lights out after that. Totally by #7 I could not read if it was an up or down in the green part of the map. I thought it was a ridge and it was a depression....
I was totally out of it by #8 and made it in in a very poor time and performance.

Friday Sep 26

Event: North American Championships

Orienteering Meet race 12:44 [5] *** 1.8 km (7:04 / km) +50m 6:13 / km
spiked:10/11c
North American sprint champs prelim 1. It was fast and easy. One mistake at #5 when I did not see the trail and lost 45 seconds in the green.
This put me in 2nd place in M-55.
Orienteering Meet race 24:01 [5] *** 3.5 km (6:52 / km)
spiked:25/27c
Ok some one was playing a big joke with me and put me in the top 15 Elite Sprinters for the big show. This was not that funny with me, but i took my challange with a grain of salt. It was making me nervous and I was not sure that I should be in this, but there were other age group (older) guys in this. Well i thought we would all be on the same course and Maricel started 30 seconds before me and headed left.I picked up my map and started to head left opps I needed to head right. Ok in front of all the spectators. I also had to figure out the punching routine special for the green runner that turned into another buffon in front of everyone. I did end up beating Glen T for 1st ??? unofficial.
It was strange being put in high regard, but others just did not want to run the 3rd loop is the best I could figure. No one asked me if i wanted to be in the elite sprints. overall I am sure I was last of the 15 not sure about the 10 women who ran.
C • Still sprintin' at 55 5

Thursday Sep 25

Event: ROC Mendon Ponds

Orienteering Meet race 1:28:25 [4] 8 km (11:03 / km)
Mendon Ponds Rochester Orienteering club thursday dusk meet.
It was a 1 hour score O, but Joe and i decided to sweep the course no matter how much time it took. It was a nice map with lots of trails. I made my loop around the lake. A little slow at the start due to heavy day of driving, big burger lunch and too many brews the night before. I did not plan on the run a very good strategy for sweeping the course.

Wednesday Sep 24

Running 50:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
Another run from my aunt;s house. I had to burn off some cal's so I could eat and drink more. Ended going to some brew pub's with my cousins. Good beers!!!!!!

Tuesday Sep 23

Road Riding 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
Ride with my old buddy Waddell from South Lyons MI. We rode from his house 2 miles and did the 8 mile loop at Kennseton Park. I rode quite simply the worst road bike still around. I told him I would look for a cheap gararge sale bike if he threw this one out to the recycle bin. It was bad , but I rode it. Nice day with fog over the lake till near the end.
Running 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
Ran from my aunt's house and found a short trail in her sub. Than out to run by some big homes to a farm. turned around and headed back.
Long run for me and tight.

Sunday Sep 21

Running race (Trail race) 21:18 [5] 5 km (4:16 / km) vdot: 46.3
Lake Villa 5 K on trail with old hill repeat climb thrown in. Felt pretty good, legs just some what tired after 3rd 5K in 5 days.

Saturday Sep 20

Running race 20:21 [5] 5 km (4:04 / km) vdot: 48.8
Cara race 5K in Wheaton. Lots of familar faces. Some what hilly of a course in northern IL if you believe it. I felt good but just not fast. I did not stick around for results, had to get home to paint.
Road Riding warm up/down 1:20:00 [4] 21.0 mi (3:48 / mi)
With Dave B after 4-5 hours of painting. Than we did the 6.5 mile time trial.
Road Riding tempo 18:31 [5] 6.5 mi (2:50 / mi)
Time trial with Dave B. I am not sure what happened to him, as he does not Road Ride much. But it was intense and new best time with an ave 21.3 mph

Friday Sep 19

Road Riding 1:17:00 [3] 20.0 mi (3:51 / mi)
Another great day for a ride.

Thursday Sep 18

Nice day, interesting woods but its Chicago forest preserve.
Road Riding 1:14:00 [3] 20.0 mi (3:42 / mi)
Could not wait to ride in this great weather. Usual 20 loop. Looked at my back tire ouch, its time for a change. Luckely I do have new tires.
C • Great weather! 4

Wednesday Sep 17

Road Riding 1:17:00 [3] 20.0 mi (3:51 / mi)
What a nice day 72 degrees and I could not wait to get out and ride. Usual 20 mile loop and 5K race tonight so I did not want to push it.
Running race 20:17 [5] 5 km (4:03 / km) vdot: 49.0
Harvest Moon 5k in Kenosha. Great night, good comp, and 1 mile of the course was trail. 2nd in age group 13th overall. dave B from Allendale showed up and ran about 19:30. Great group of people hosting the race from the Kenosha Running Club.
C • Good time...PR? 5

Tuesday Sep 16

Running 33:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:15 / mi)
Down road and back, now becoming my usual run. Last 2 in 15:00.
I still have to muddle through the results and $$ from the BBF.
C • $$ 1

Monday Sep 15

Road Riding 1:04:00 [3] 14.4 mi (4:27 / mi)
Ride back from dropping vehicle off. It was windy from the north and cold. Whats that about?? Fall is here.
Road Riding 1:06:00 [3] 14.3 mi (4:36 / mi)
Even slower back to get vehicle. It seemed like intervals cause I would go hard on bad roads and than coast on good roads. Good road = no cars.

Sunday Sep 14

Orienteering Related (Control Hanging) 1:30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (29:59 / mi)
I only had 3 controls to put up, but I had to drive to 2 different places, cross a creek 3 times, the last being up to my waist, that wasn't that high 4 hours early. They were tough controls that I had to make sure they were in the exact place.
The Big Blue O fest was wet, but the folks who ran enjoyed the wet (understatment) courses had fun.
I am glad its done and now the cleanup work ( drying out ) and meet stuff done.
There were a great number of helpers who helped pull this off, thanks go out to them.

Saturday Sep 13

Orienteering Related (Control Hanging) 2:00:00 [3]
Deer Grove at the Big Wet Rain Fest. It was wet is an understatement.
It broke records for rain in Chicago since they have been keeping records.
The creek going through the middle of the map was flood swollen.
I tried to warn people not to attempt to cross if it looked bad. Only one person went in totally under, but kept the map dry.
I had to go through the creek where it went over the road a couple of times and the water would get higher and higher. No kids would be allowed to do this meet alone. Some scouts had a blast on the white course, than they attempted the yellow course and had to cross the creek, I think they were smart and just went around.
Overall people seemed to like the courses and even enjoy running in the rain. Ok the bad news was the SI punch was not working properly and Carl L had to spend 2.5 hours trying to get it up and running. Long day and I had to get home to wash and dry clothes and get some solid sleep.

Friday Sep 12

Cross Biking Rd/Trail 55:00 [3] 14.0 mi (3:54 / mi)
Busse Woods North and South. Joe and Jeff all on Mt Bikes, bike the paved trail and stop for lunch. It started raining and never quit for 3 days and nights.
Orienteering Related 2:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi)
Hang the 2 sprint courses for the Big Blue Rain Fest. Also pick up sprint 1 just in time before the darkness set in. Off to the Ram Brewery for food and drink with an awesome group of orienteer's.

Thursday Sep 11

Cross Biking Rd/Trail 1:11:00 [3] 14.3 mi (4:57 / mi)
Went to pick up vehicle and it was into a stiff wind the whole way and the legs still lack energy.

Wednesday Sep 10

Running 36:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
Pretty lackluster run, I thought I was hyper, than had to chase a chipmunk out of the house w/ the cat who must of brought it in. 20 minutes later, my energy went down and a slow run.
Cross Biking Rd/Trail 2:10:00 [3] 32.0 mi (4:03 / mi)
Des Plaines trail from 173 to Ind.Grove. We hammered the usual last 3 miles and both hit 8:36. I of course was on my hybrid this time since my legs were fairly trashed from yesterday.

Tuesday Sep 9

Road Riding 4:45:00 [3] 71.5 mi (3:59 / mi)
Great long ride with Don J. who took off work early to make this happen.
Nice roads make this a Wisconsin Classic from my house. It was supposed to be a 100 miler, but cut it short due to daylight issues.

Sunday Sep 7

Road Riding 1:03:00 [3] 16.0 mi (3:56 / mi)
Road ride to Harvey with Twohey, along Lake Superior route 41. I have never done this route or went through the Harvey area forever.

Saturday Sep 6

Mt. Biking race 2:45:00 [5] 31.5 mi (5:13 / mi)
Tour Da Woods 30 mile race. My first ever Mt. Bike Race.
It started out raining hard 10 minutes before the race started. At 9:30 it stopped and off we went about 60 folks doing the 30 miler, Twohey's son was doing the 15. It was a great trail ride lots of single track, some long strecthes of dirt road and lots of sand and grit flying up near the face. I stayed with Twohey the whole time, but the last stretch before the finish was a part called the goat path, it was rough and Twohey is much better in the tehcinal stuff, and me on the roads. This tandem bike couple asked if I was a roadie, well I said yes and let tthem pass me. On a road stretch I passed them and a few others to catch Twohey who wasn't about a 1/4 mile up.
I bit it a couple of times in the heavy sand, but it was a nice soft landing.
Everytime I had to bust back up to Towhey who never bite it.
In the end it was a great day for riding and a fun race,

Friday Sep 5

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Quick run along shore of Lake Superior, legs seem tired and slow. Ok back to hard labor on my lawn up north.

Wednesday Sep 3

Road Riding 1:15:00 [3] 21.0 mi (3:34 / mi)
Nice pace with Joe and his new Felt F-3. Cool to start and than really nice smooth ride. My country roads....
Road Riding 45:00 [3] 9.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
Ride to store from home, yes its about time. The roads to the store are still not that great but it saves gas, so I can drink more beer ( its cheaper).

Tuesday Sep 2

trail bike ride 1:55:00 [4] 28.0 mi (4:06 / mi)
Tough ride with Dave B, after work for him. Des Plaines river trail. We finally hammered back the 3 mile stretch from wadsworth rd to 173. I only did it in 9:04 and him 8:40...ouch. It was good to go that hard again.

Monday Sep 1

Road Riding 3:13:00 [3] 48.0 mi (4:01 / mi)
Nice long ride with Don J, and once again tried to stay on he roads with the least amount of traffic around my house. It did start to get warm and this was about my limit today.
