Swim (ocean) 1:00:00 [3]

Spent a few hours bodysurfing in the ocean. So awesome!! Wish I lived near to the coast.

Run (road) 53:30 [3] 5.5 mi (9:44 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 10

Up even earlier and considered running across a big bridge to barrier island but decided against it because it looked hot even at 7 a.m. Pretty much the same route as yesterday but a bit more decisive since I knew where I was going and avoided a few dead end streets. Also made it through more of the "old town" to the main square which still has the old slave market structure. I had uncomfortable (almost scared) emotions as I ran by it. Maybe my historic imagination is too good. It reminded me of my feelings touring Berchtesgaden last summer. Yeeech!!

Note

Long day sail today... just awesome. Stiff breeze with the boat was just singing through the water. Saw a shark & many rays in the water. Very cool.

Run (road) 52:15 [3] 5.5 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 10

Up early had had coffee with dad and got moving before the heat got too oppressive but it was anyway. Ran from the marina into old St. Augustine & past some of the cool sights (fort, city gate & 600yo oak tree). Good to get out after so many busy days when I couldn't get in a run.

Note

Tourist day spent around town. Saw a movie about the history of the area, visited the fort, old town and finally RIpley's Believe It or Not museum. This was exactly what I expected and not really my thing (although the optical illusions were fun) but the kids loved it. Mega-pasta on board tonight. Hope to run again tomorrow.

Note

Up SUPER-early to get the gang to the airport for 6 a.m. flight. As it was, we made it in time for us but not the checked bag with sunscreen & other large bottles. Apparent they require an hour for checked luggage. Grrrr. Had to jettison ~$30 worth of stuff and plan a stop to replace upon arrive here in FL.
Dad picked us up in his new car that he bought for the occasion (tongue only slighly in cheek) and we headed to the marina so we could sail with the tide. Onshore breeze built over the late morning and afternoon as we headed north past his place in Ponta Vedra Beach and then back to St. Augustine in time for a yummy dinner of fresh seafood. Neat to see him & get the kids out sailing on a big boat. I've had my fill of ocean sailing but had a great time and fell right into my foredeck jobs. Hopefully we can set the chute the next trip out.

Note

Funny that I guessed my best world cup race (12th place) for the EOC Long. I had 3 goose eggs and my major points came from the other favorites. Sadly, I dropped home boy Kiril Nikolov after his great run in the middle thinking he would be satisfied with that. Nope, he had a podium finish coming in the long. Well done.

7 AM

Run (trail) 1:10:00 [3] 7.5 mi (9:20 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse 712

Run from camp to the visitor center along the river & back. Treat to be up early and out. Saw a bald eagle up very close as it lit from a tree I ran under. Most was great single track but some were boardwalks & stairs as I got closer to the center. Return by a shorter but steeper route. All awke but little done so we packed-up camp & took a vote for more activities or home.
7 PM

Run 38:30 [3] 4.0 mi (9:38 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse 712

Run around Lakewood FP while Joseph was at his final Dr. Ed. class. Nice expansive area but little topographic relief for good control locations. Club still deciding whether to map this preserve. It's certainly close to me and would be great to have another map but I'm still recovering from the Palisades effort. It'll have to be next year unless someone else steps up.

Hike 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Everyone fragmented to do various activities around Starved Rock (hiking, fishing & visitor center study). I took care of moving the folks about and got to hike to the top of the rock for the view & relearn about the awesome geological forces that formed the area.
After that, we stopped at camp for lunch and then on to Matthiessen SP to hike the river gorges, up the waterfalls & slide down them too. Ton of fun and everyone's favorite place. Much quieter evening and all slept well after the craziness of the first night.

Note

Up early catching the end of the EOC. Impressive looong runs in that heat. Wow.
Like most, my middle distance fantasy results were pretty skewed with Thierry so far down and Khramov out of them. Home boy Nikolov came through for me but sadly I dropped him for the long final where he finished 6th. Awesome to see the eastern Europeans make inroads into the Swiss & Scandinavian dominance.

Hike 1:20:00 [1] 3.0 mi (26:40 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse 712

Starved Rock SP
After early drive down & campsite setup, we all hiked from camp to Beehive Overlook. Could have easily made it to the visitor center but voted and decided to turn around. Back to campsite for early & yummy dinner of chicken over the (charcoal) fire and then s'mores around the real fire. As soon as we got settled, huge storm came through. We had tornadoes north & south of us but none through us yet did keep eye on the sky & ear to the radio. Girls tent got flooded out so we moved it right after the storm. Mine was dry but so tall that it almost lost its rain fly in the wind. Exciting & fun now but all a bit scary at the time.

Run long (path) 2:29:00 [3] 15.0 mi (9:56 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 10

Run from work along the DRT to Lincolnshire. Neat area that I usually see by bike so there was more time to look around. Still very wet from the floods and lots of skeeters about. The day's AOWN moment was not tranquil as I encountered a family of geese and one mad momma "goose-rushed" me with flapping wings and hissing beak. I spread my massive wingspan and vocalized a lot more than a hiss and s/he eventually retreated from this foul fowl. Whew !!

Thursday Jun 3, 2010 #

Run (path & road) 50:30 [3] 5.2 mi (9:43 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 10

Ran over so see the end of Katie's softball game (they won, yay!!). Crossed Buttefield at Golf & finished a half Carmel Lap from there. Still cool, felt good.
