PTOC Bluffwoods 9-hour Night Rogaine. Another Great Event. Charlie and I arrived late and only had 20 minutes to plan our route. Despite this inauspicious beginning, we had an exciting, enjoyable and rewading race.
There were a number of highlights but I experienced an early lowlight. While climbing an early hill into our sixth control, I was surprised when it started to "rain" and I was covered by large droplets. One breath in through my nose and I knew this was not not rain, but that some creature from a tree above had "dumped" on me. Clearly it was not as fond of my route choice as I was.
Lots of navigation successes, but one notable highlight was crossing paths around 3:30 a.m. with the winning team of Eric and Dave on their way to the finish. After all we had put into our race, it was easy to appreciate the athletic feat they had just completed in sweeping the course. 'Grats guys.
Charlie was solid and we moved pretty fast in the few places where there was less foliage. I felt pretty good throughout the race although I think I went hypothermic around 5 a.m. as the ridge-top wind froze my wet clothes. This was quickly forgotten with a hot finish-line meal and the news that we took third place in the open division. Big thanks to Dick, Mike and all of the other PTOCers who made this such a great event.
