Run (trail) 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Icebug MR2 910

Couldn't sleep well and finally just got up to make some coffee and clear the fog from partying last night. Not especially hungry and couldn't find anywhere south of Elkhart Lake for breakfast so I just headed to the meet site. Good warmup and was totally relaxed about the race because yesterday was my goal race, today would be fun.

Orienteer race (classic) 1:07:54 [4] **** 7.3 km (9:18 / km) +180m 8:17 / km
shoes: Icebug MR2 910

Felt ok at the beginning and spiked the first two and then set map for control 3 but instead laid compass along 7 - 8. Major mental error was not discovered until I did not reach the trail as planned. Grrrrrr. Tried to relocate but was a bit frazzled, unsure and slow as I proceeded. Doinking the end of the leg was a fitting finish. Started to fatigued climbing to 4. I was still hung-over and unfortunately could not get motivated to push the pace. Finally resigned to just trot the course and enjoy the day. This is my last a-meet of a great year so I wanted to make it fun. Ran clean but took a lazy route to 14 because I was done running through prickers. Missed my trail to the last control and squandered almost 2 minutes there. Not a race to be proud of but also not one to feel bad about. I just love this terrain and enjoyed making a fun day of it.

Orienteer race (classic) 1:06:28 [4] ***** 7.6 km (8:45 / km) +282m 7:23 / km

US Classic Champs 2009
Cat's Meow, Greenbush, WI
This race has been on my calendar since 2005 when Kevin showed me the LIDAR base map as we were talking between races in Bend, OR. He knew it was championship quality terrain and would eventually host the US Champs. He gave us a small taste of it later that year and another in 2006 and I never forgot the feeling of running through "a maze of twisty kettles, all alike." I don't know why but, ever since my first orienteering season when I ran at Telemark, I have always done well in this inverted terrain. I also got some intense practice just last weekend at Camp Ripley and made the most of it. I was ready for today and had the race of my life (to date).
It was like reading my favorite book the whole time. I almost always kept map contact and had a sound plan for where I was going. Other than bobbling the end of nine and a sub-optimal route choice to 6, it was perfect. I simplified where necessary and found handrails everywhere. My only problem was that I was physically beat over the last third of the race as I've hardly trained for three weeks (no motivation). I knew that speed was not going to win it today, but a clean race would and I had one.
Whoo Hoo !!!!!

US Champs Banquet
All the CAOCs seemed to arrive just as the doors opened so I bought two pitchers of Spotted Cow and the party was rolling. I was happy, relieved and ready to celebrate. The beers were sooooo tasty, the food was plentiful and yummy and the company was great fun. It was very cool that everyone gave Kevin a standing ovation for his efforts and leadership in delivering these champs. I drank waaaay too much but that was part of making this a great o-banquet.

Orienteer race (goat) 1:53:29 [4] **** 12.3 km (9:14 / km) +300m 8:13 / km

MNOC Minnegoat
Excellent crowning race to a great meet. So glad I made the trip. Cool, clear morning just perfect for this race. Barely got up there in time to warmup and go. Start was a train of people heading into the kettles looking more for Swampfox's yellow Swedish shirt than at their maps. I was back a bit and intent on running my system, picking my own routes and keeping complete map contact. Succeeded through the most difficult terrain. Things slowly spread out and people dropped of the back until I was with just the MNOC OTNT pack at 9. Decided it was time to start splitting routes with them to hopefully get some separation. To 11, I succeeded but not in the direction I planned as I gave up 90 seconds by going right and making a small parallel error while they rode the fast left handrail. I pushed it through 16 but never again reattached. The good news was that I was finally running alone where I wanted to be. However, a sloppy route to 18 led to my only loss of map contact and with no easy relocation option, I cut my losses and skipped it. It would have been a good skip choice but getting within 70 meters (as I did) and then skipping it was the death knell to my time. There rest were pretty clean as I chose good routes and executed well except the final "brain fart" in skipping the go control and having to go back and punch it after finishing.
Phenomenal terrain, good practice for next weekend.

Orienteer (control picking) 50:00 [3] **** 5.0 km (10:00 / km)

Couldn't squander my final opportunity to get out in this terrain. So, after a little replenishment and rehydration, I headed back to the complex area SE of the start for some control picking. Executing well so I decided to do the last half as a memory-o. This was excellent practice but very difficult. More of this will do me some good.

Note

Up at 3:30 for final packing and drive to MKE. With my sleeping bad, thermarest and quiver of shoes, I need one of our big rollers. Never had this much stuff for a NA meet. Drive, flight, drive was uneventful. Pretty rural country reminded me of WI except the towns are tiny. Arrived a few hours early and was starving so I found a local diner and had a greasy omlette AND three big pancakes. Whoa, food coma. Got through base security and onto this long severely potholed dirt road 45 minutes north to the meets site. With the full belly and early wake-up, I was due for a nap so I didn't even get out of my car but grabbed my pillow and slept for 2 hours!! By the time I got myself together I was the last one headed out on the course...

Orienteer (score-o) 34:53 [4] **** 4.0 km (8:43 / km) +80m 7:56 / km

Camp Ripley Score-O
Crisp, late afternoon race. Have been looking forward to this terrain for years and I was not disappointed. Owen Baird set a good score-o course such that the best route avoided the many trails through this area. My navigation was good except for a small bobble on third control. Moving well through these nice woods. Major mental error in missing one of my planned controls even though I passed within 100 meters of it. Arrgghh!! Gotta clean those up.

Note

MNOC Potluck Picnic in a Camp Ripley grove right on Mississippi river. Big fire, brats, tons of plate-filler food and good company. Cool to finally attach faces to the MNOC AP personalities. The Army finally dampened our fun by kicking us out early so Charlie and I doused the fire and we made the loooong drive south "uprange" to the barracks. The accommodations were pretty decent as 15 of us stayed in a room with 20 beds. However, it was a stark, windowless, concrete barracks and not conducive to hanging out for 3 hours. But I was wrong, Molly MNOC started a game like (but better than) charades and we all played two fun rounds of it. Fun time with good folks.

Run (path & road) 45:40 [3] 5.2 mi (8:47 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 905

Cool but nice evening for a Carmel Lap...
GPS track is ok. It is certainly better in the open vs. around big trees. Still tweaking the log settings to reduce the noise.

Orienteer race (classic) 1:00:58 [3] *** 6.7 km (9:06 / km) +80m 8:35 / km
shoes: Icebug MR2 811

CAOC Meet @ Palos North
The vegetation here is a Cuisinart to slice and dice the unwary orienteer. I tried to pick white routes but the veg isn't reliably mapped. Ok run but boomed #1 (even considering it was hung on wrong distinct tree) and a few other bobbles. Oivind kicked my butt big time.

IG Lap with tracker on wrist. Accuracy acceptable for running but not sure about orienteering. I will have to overlay by tracks from last weekend on map scans and see.

Boulder Dash - Sargent Center, Hancock, NH - Red - Day 2
Drier than yesterday but a bit warmer. Pretty relaxed about this race and looking forward to it.
Ran well with decent map contact and route choices. Map vision is degrading and I am not yet comfortable with the magnifier, but I keep trying. Will try to get the GPS tracks downloaded to overlay the maps. Not sure why, I'm pretty sure I know where I was.

Boulder Dash - Classic Day 1 - Fox Forest, Hillsborough, NH
Rainy day but good terrain, course & woods. Ran well, very good nav sans two bad controls. I see glimmers of the navigator I'll to become (maybe in 20 years).

Run (path & road) 1:38:00 [3] 10.8 mi (9:04 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 905

Adler-IG lap. Nothing notable about the run. I wanted to run it to get some tracks but they looked awful (compared to yesterday). Either that little logger sucks or I need another place to carry it.
