Run (path & road) 55:30 [3] 5.2 mi (10:40 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR 10

Carmel Lap with Katie (on her bike). She's motivated to exercise these days so this was a fun way for us to do it together.

Bike (mtn) 1:10:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Ride to OS & back. Trail almost completely open of ice. Yay!! Was quite muddy & exhausting in parts but should be great for running.... perhaps it's time to start.

Gateway Runt
After feeling good yesterday, I actually considered upgrading to the Grunt. That would have been a huge mistake as the Runt was enough for me to handle.
Bad start as I made a route choice that required fording a wide river. When I got there I decided against getting my feet soaked this early and had to pound around on the upper bank through lots of reentrants. Was moving ok but proceeded to miss the next few controls and a later one too because an area of significant rocky ground was not mapped.
As the woods grew hotter, my strength ebbed away and I soon felt spent in addition to being discouraged by my nav. Decided to walk the rest and that made all the difference. I locked-down my nav and also began to really enjoy the day, woods and loved finding everything on the map. Decided to take the control I had originally planned to skip because it looked more interesting than the final control. It's rare that I can let myself be uncompetitive at an a-meet (and I don't plan on doing it often) but this was the right call today.

Orienteer (map walk) 1:30:00 [2] **** 6.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Icebug MR2 910

Made the most of this trip to Hawn by heading back out for some extra practice. Talked through lots of various o-stuff with Erin. She's always been motivated to learn & improve so it's fun to help out. Plus, it reinforces good habits to explain them to another. Nice afternoon.

What a treat !!
to finally be back at Hawn, the map on which I ran my first a-meet. It was the quality of this map that got me hooked on orienteering and a-meets (& i-meets) in particular.
Pleased with my run. Navigated well but physically weak. Made one poor route choice that lost me 1-2 minutes. Great to be on a map again.

Note

Fighting off the flu. Was considering not going to STL but then decided to go for the middle & runt as well as the good time always to be had down there.
