Note

Got a last minute cancellation at the dentist. He says the socket is infected, as is the wisdom tooth behind. He said this explains how I've been feeling as my glands are swollen.

Pleased to have a diagnosis and cure, (antibiotics and possible wisdom tooth out next week). Frustrated as I have 3 more teeth to come out over a staggered period of time. I literally couldn't even stride at 5.40 pace when it was at its peak. Bloomin ummer.

Gonna have to dig out the Darren Anderton shirt to spectate te Euros this summer

Race race 17:30 [5] 3.0 mi (5:50 / mi)

Spent the day thinking i had food stuck where my tooth was, but couldn't get it out. When I got home I used tweezers to get it- it was actually a very jagged fragment of the tooth which must have broken off.

Hoping all this fatigue is from a tooth infection and that, this fragment was the source

Easy Running 41:04 [3] 6.0 mi (6:51 / mi)
rhr:38 slept:9.0

Felt super stiff on waking this morning, particularly where I got bettered yesterday. Even though I should know better, being a physio myself, I hoped that with a wave of a magic wand I would be fixed this morning.

Put the run off and when I went i felt pretty ok bio mechanically but still a bit tight on medial hammy. I felt a little more spritely but still feel a bit under the weather. Tomorrow is gonna be a slog unfortunately, but I can't miss it, I'd rather run shit than not at all.

Did 6 out and back along the river with the final mile a hollow mile- strides were about marathon pace and felt laborious. It was glorious however to run in shorts and t shirt and yet still have a bit of a dab on

Note
slept:9.0 (rest day)

Bit Chesty today and still full of cold, but feelin better. Taking another day off, got nothing to lose.

Went I see Mark Buckingham today in Northhampton, a lot of athletes rave about him and having seen a few people now and spent a lot of cash tryin to get fixed, I decided to shell out.

I don't profess to be the greatest physio in the world, but I do think I can spot a bit of bullshit-which so far I've heard a lot of. But I trust this guy as he's one of the only people who doesn't send Hatti back with 20 new exercises.

Anyways, he said that the problem is that my SI joint is not moving in the slightest on the right side causing my back to get jarred when I run and my gluts to tighten, which has caused my sciatic nerve to get inflamed.

To be honest, I think SI joint diagnoses get banded about a bit willy nilly, it's a bit of a buzz diagnosis and used too often. But, I think he's possibly right in this instance. Whenever I sit or stand I'm aware that I'm constantly side flexed to the right and when running my pelvis feels totally fixed.

Despite over 1-2hours stretching and moving a day it's not corrected- probably because of the joint offering so much resistance

The annoying thing is the last physio I saw ( who i also trust) assessed it and said it was fine. Mark gave the muscles some abuse and tried to work on a ligament which has contracted due to the length of time the joit has been how it is, he gave me 4 exercises to do to try and maintain it.

Currently, I'm in a lot of pain but hopefully it will ease off. He also said that with this kind of problem u can run at easier paces relatively pain free but when u open out to go quicker, due to the lack of movement things get stirred up quickly- which makes a lot of sense. He also said to continue running on it as it will help keep/ maintain the movement- which makes sense as I always feel worse for resting

The other issue is this really tender point in my back. Often when your back is stiff it feels "bruised" when you touch the stiffened segment.

I have felt his in my back, but he says that that is actually a bruise of the bone in my case as I have "kissin vertebrae" which are banging together when I run due to the altered position of my pelvis from all the tightness/ stiffness

Sorry to waffle by I wanted to jot it down for future reference. I rated him, I wish I was as good a physio, his performance of assessment techniques was first class. Hope this all helps, don't feel bad about spending the money at this point anyways

Rough as a badgers this morning- would rest but wanna rest tomorrow post physio, so will just run once later and cut it shorter than planned. HR only slightly up from normal

Feel too rough to run today, feeling a bit "peaky"
May run tomorrow, may just take 2 days, we shall see

Easy Running 34:50 [3] 5.0 mi (6:58 / mi)
slept:11.0 weight:150lbs

Felt a bit bunged up the last few days, with a sore throat which has now turned into a cold, so don't feel too cracking today- not bothered though as all I want to do is race the National and finish without worsening my back/leg. If it was any other race I wouldnt go but I can't stand the thought of missing it

Did a pre brekkie plod- leg and back unfortunately very stiff this morning
3 PM

Session 23:39 [5] 4.69 mi (5:03 / mi)

How ironic that in todays session I was flat as a pancake. I've never been so far back in the group in Brum as I was today. Although there are a plethora of reasons (excuses), its still frustrating.

Session was at Metchley and was a "hollow" lap of the fields, a hard half lap, 5 x full laps (ideally increasing pace) a hard half lap and then a further hollow lap. All off 1 min.

Hollow lap 3:00 0.57 5:15
Hard half 1:35.7 0.35 4:35
Lap 1 2:57.7 0.57 5:10
2 2:50.1 0.57 4.57
3 2:50.3 0.57 4:58
4 2:48.9 0.57 4:56
5 2:50.8 0.57 4.59
Hard Half 1:41.9 0.35 4:49
Hollow lap 3:04.2 0.57 5:19

My reasons, for future reference could be, the leg, a minor cold, the tooth infection, lack of sleep, the recent stress, or even the fact that there are a few miles in my legs at the mo -albeit without much quality.

But tyhat was much slower than normal for me at Metchley and those guys arent normally clsoe to me. The same thing happened at Leeds on sat.

Luckily its taper time, hopefully that will do the trick. The leg actually held up quite well, although I could feel it and the back throughout.

Easy Running 1:05:17 [3] 9.27 mi (7:03 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:148.5lbs

Had a very nice curry with TOm and Michelle at the Raj Poop last night so Tom and I decided to run together this am. He sai he had a route in mind, My words were "i dont want to make mu back worse, it won't be too hilly will it?" he replied "it's Sheffield mate", with a wry smile..

We then headed on the hilly roads of Totley which I expected, the hit the golf course which was up/down on cambers and over tree routes. Having woken up with a slightly less tight back than recent mornings this set everything off, so I had to be an ass and go off an run inthe roads on my own.

I should have learnt my lesson last time I ran with others. I'm such a dick- need to realise that people can't feel what I'm feelin so don reall know what's gonna make things worse. Gonna go on my own- or at least on routes I pick until this is sorted now

Dont like looking like I'm spitting my dummy out.

Incidentally- no matter how much I eat at the moment I'm ravaged by hunger, dunno why but I'm never full!

Post church run run Derwent then some out and back action to make it 90 mins. Feeling myself a bit more now (energy wise) leg bahaved until the last mile or so where it tightened slightly.

Back was the main issue- still very tight. Have booked in with a sports physio guru to see what he has to say.

slept:8.0 weight:147.5lbs

Couldn't be arsed with this session and had I had trained tues/thurs I would possibly have binned it. This was made worse by the fact that as I approached Boddington fields the heavens opened. I've been trying to avoid rough/muddy terrain for a while. I've bin wondering whether to sack off the Nationals or not so decided to test the leg on the mud today and if there was a problems I can change my plans accordingly.

As it happened the leg responded really well, absolutely no change throughout the session. My backs still incredibly tight and very ore on a morning though, but seems to have been eased by mobing it yesterday. Fingers crossed. The session itself wasn't great I still feel really flat. Luckily it was a short taper session, so I just got through it. Hopefully with a very easy week I can get something out of the national and even more hopefully start proper training following it.

Easy Running 1:03:46 [3] 10.08 mi (6:20 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:147.5lbs

Took advantage of the wards being a Norovirus war zone (so we can't treat anyone) and got out for my 10 milers at 11. Glad as I'm knackered now, my old man came in to my room just as I'd got to sleep, sat on the edge of my bed and complained of being short of breath and thought he was having an attack. He was, a panic attack. Nightmare, so again I'm feeling knackered- took a long time to resolve the issue and get back to sleep. I went to bed with no leg pain, just a tight back. I woke up with raging back pain and couldn't straighten my leg. This eased with some hot water action- suggesting its an inflammatory issue.

Got the extended scope physio to look at my back to see if I need an MRI or not. He confirmed what I feared, this whole shebang is coming from my lumbar disc, and there a few levels involved. No scan necessary as it doesnt look like a buldge, but inflammation. So I need stronger anti inflamms.

He says to stop running, but NHS physios always do. Since Hatt massaged me last week, some of the spasm has eased and I'd already located a few areas that were very stiff- hopefully with some better tablets and some mobs it might clear up. If not, then I will rest again. The problem is that the disc is there to absorb shock and I'm not the most elegant of runners. Ive been injured now for 13 weeks, a couple more of trying this won't make a difference as I've missed all the races I was aiming for.

Ran along the trans pennine trail for 4 miles, 2 laps of a nature reserve which is bang on a mile and then back to the hospital
6 PM

Easy Running 33:00 [3] 5.0 mi (6:36 / mi)

Had a cheeky nap and then ground this out. Let heel still a bit sore but improving, leg never any worse- in fact feeling good, back dry tight. Gonna try and self mob it till I can see a physio

Easy Running 33:05 [3] 5.06 mi (6:32 / mi)
slept:6.0

Had a great night in Bakwell with Hatts, unfortunately over indulged, even had a fried brekkie at the hotel, so feel naughty today.

Unfortunately, I slept crap as the room was boiling hot and my tooth woke me up at 3.30 and that was it from there-on in. Sacked off pre work run and did it on my lunch break. Nothing remarkable. Back not painful, but very tight indeed. Leg behaved. Slight pain in left heel
4 PM

Easy Running 1:17:50 [3] 12.04 mi (6:28 / mi)

Stopped off on way back to my folks' house after work, no room in the nurses accom. tonight- my own fault for not booking in advance.

Ran along the TPT from Manvers. Really couldn't be arced to even start the run. Felt a bit knackered so just cruised on auto pilot. Glad when it was over.

Leg not quite right, but not painful, back extremely tight, but not painful. Left heel a bit sore- I know exactly what that is from, it was the sharp, short hill up onto the Monsal trail last night, which I ran on my toes up.

Hopefully that will settle with a bit of icing. Really need to get this back loosened.

Binned the gym as feeling really tired

Easy Running warm up/down 45:09 [3] 6.45 mi (7:00 / mi)
slept:5.0

Up most of the night with tooth ache and back ache, legs sore on waking but eased with a shower. Decided to run to millhouses, if no pain by time I got there then I'd do a session, is there was pain I'd do 80 mins.

Got there feelin ok so went ahead with session

Session intervals 32:00 [5] 6.0 mi (5:20 / mi)

6 x 1 mile to Garmin beeps in millhouses. I never run fast in millhouses, but despite it being windy, this was a particularly poor session. It was clear after the second rep that the aim would be just to get through it, so after that point I didn't force it.

In the summer I was doing 10minute tempo efforts bedore sessions at 5.06 miling, so I have a very long way to go yet.

On a brighter note, my dad came home yesterday and the WAG and I are heading to Bakewell for the evening, so it's not all doom and gloom
5 PM

Easy Running 39:39 [3] 6.0 mi (6:37 / mi)

Having a cheeky night with the mrs in Bakewell, so after a quick mooch we headed along the monsall trail I went on a little further than her just to to lay it down that men are stronger. And I justify eating half her tea tonight.

Felt a bit more energetic, legs better than anticipated but still a little sore.

slept:9.0 (rest day)

Woke up with screaming back ache. Spent most of the morning trying to ease it off with exercises, shower, hot water bottle, Hatti even have it a rub.

Couldn't spend all day wondering I it would handle a session so went to do it before lunch. Got half a mile into the warm up and had a really bad feeling about it, so I walked back.

Really sharp neural type pain behind my knee, could feel the muscles tightening with each step, so taking an emergency rest day. Feeling a bit hacked off

Easy Running 1:00:15 [3] 9.0 mi (6:42 / mi)

Almost binned a second run entirely, but just about managed to get out as run envy of Hatti would have got the better of me.

We stopped off at Manvers on the way home from visiting my old man and just plodded.

Great to have her back, felt better on second half with wind behind us, hamstring still sore. Bit frustrated. Feel bloody shattered

Easy Running long 1:55:20 [3] 16.5 mi (6:59 / mi)
slept:7.0

Joined Tom and Andy C for their 20 miler and felt flat as a fart from the word go. Initially we Planned the TPT but it had long stretches of sheet ice. Despite earning the Bambi on ice award for 3 falls this week Tom felt it was runnable, so I spat my dummy out.

I had a really painful massage lat night on my super tight hamstring, which seems I have helped- so didn't wanna ruin it!

Despite a really flat, easy route 7 min miling felt labourious. A combination of a few beers last night and an infected hole where my tooth was are prob to blame- do happy just to grind it out. Was tempted to get the 20 in but the route change delay mean I would be late for visiting.

Hamstring still tight

A couple of safety risks were highlighted, one being a slushy area outside Charlie Browns. Despite passing the health and safety check, a van pulled out on us with 20 secs to go at this point on the first rep, I wet on the road Tom went left, changed direction on the slush and stacked it.

Horrendous for him to fall in water in -3 conditions, offered to bin session and he was having non of it. As

I write this I am now laughing a lot and seeing the funny side as, the image conjured was one of a hippo writhing around ina mud bath as Tom trees to get back on his feet, icy water every where. Feel sorry for him though

Session tempo 31:32 [5] 6.01 mi (5:15 / mi)

Tempo session around the Hillsborough triangle. I planned to run to a heart rate of between 164-166, the first mile always being difficult to judge until the HR catches up, not helped by the Garmin losing satellites, despite a 3 miel warm up to the spot I started at.

I hope to do my tempos to target HM pace soon, but I'm currently a long way off, but I felt this was a good session all things considered, the main thing is I maintained the target HR, the pace will come.

I almost made it a cheeky 10k to see where I am, but unfortunately on my last lap I needed a poo, I thought I'd try to make it, or worst case scenario stop at the bush where I dropped my kit, unfortunately i couldn't even get there.

So now when someone says, where is the strangest place you have ever had a poo, my answer will be "underneath the trailer of a parked up articulated lorry in Hillsborough" I was so scared it was gonna drive off an crush me, luckily the driver was watching a DVD in the cabin

Back really stiff, right hammy tight, left hip tight.

Session tempo 43:20 [5] 7.6 mi (5:42 / mi)
ahr:161 rhr:36 slept:6.0 weight:148lbs

Was really looking forward to this session. I planned to do it around wintersett, running 10 miles @ 158-160 BPM HR. Or, hopefully marathon pace. I managed 5 miles at this intensity (hitting 5.30 miling last week on the back end of an accelerun, so I felt it was a manageable load)

Unfortunately Wintersett was a death trap, so I nipped home and got some gym kit just in case, and set off to other suitable venues. Manvers was a death trap as was every other place I tried, I even called Alex Smith who lives at Millhouses- he said this too was a death trap.

So I apprehensively headed to Sheffield to use the treadmill. I've never sessioned on a treadmill before and yesterdays runs felt much quicker than the read-outs. I set the treadmill to 17km an hour for a few mins then picked it up to 18km an hour, which felt like sprinting. I rolled with it for a bit but it was too much also my HR was up to 164 which was too much.

So, I backed off, kept the HR to 160 and did what I could. I hated every second of it. I was constantly feeling like I needed a slash and was really analysing my leg ad I had nothing else to focus on. I was mentally struggling by 7 miles and my leg was getting tighter, so I reluctantly lasted a little longer and binned it.

Im disappointed in myself for giving in, but I was running at target HR in fairness, but a combination of boredom and a shitty injury led to me binning it (and poor mathematical skills as I thought I'd made it to 8 miles- gutted.)

5 PM

Easy Running 42:15 [3] 6.0 mi (7:03 / mi)

Left hip now sore. Didn't wanna do this run and had a long debate about am i forcing it, is it just a case of grinding it out etc.. But got it done without forcing it. Both legs felt shite. Had a tough day today so will spend the evening stretching and having a few beers.

Having waited 5 weeks for it, the hospital rang to cancel my Dads surgery today. We rang them back and kicked off and it is now back on but its been a very emotionally tough one. So, with the house to myself, I am having home made fish and chips and a few beers tonight, seeing as though I'm off the antibiotics

Decided to use the treadmill, as much as I prefer running outdoors, whatever the weather- yesterday didn't help my problems.

Very boring but got it done. First 5miles at 6.31 pace, second half at 6.15 pace. Legs ok throughout, but there's defo tightness there and my back is killing.

I'm gonna give intervals a miss this week, at least until Saturday, instead I'm gonna do sustained threshold sessions on tues and thurs, conditions and leg permitting.

Easy Running long 1:36:48 [3] 14.01 mi (6:55 / mi)

I love running in the snow, but i hated 125 minutes of this run, after a few miles the hip/hamstring tightened and i was constantly trying to release it.

Most times I would turn around and bin it, but with me having my tooth out on Friday that has to be my rest day and my Dad is going in on Wednesday so have no flexibility (ironic), so i just got round. I will be spending the rest of the day stretching.

I am looking at rejigging the next weeks training, as tomorrow was going to be a session. It may have to be a "MARATHON PACE" week. Although I was hoping for a "3K pace week." Haha

A gorgeous day though

Easy Running warm up/down 40:28 [3] 5.52 mi (7:20 / mi)
slept:6.0

I slept shit last night worrying about a few things and also in pain from the tooth, then woke up all bunged up. But needed to do something positive so went for session anyway.

At Leeds boddington playing fields with Leeds AC, depleted numbers due to BUCS, West Yorkshire schools and Alsager/Dewsbury. But Deakin was there so always someone to aim for, not that I'd ever get close. Good to see Tom Edwards

Session intervals 30:00 [5] 5.79 mi (5:11 / mi)

With no coaches present Deakin was in charge, we had the session pre-set but with Parlie Hill looming he wanted to use a hilly circuit, so the whole session was on the bottom fields. I really enjoyed it, but my hip got tighter and tighter as the session wore on.

Session tempo 16:00 [4] 3.0 mi (5:20 / mi)

Good session on the 1k triangle loop from Charlie Browns round the back and down penistone Rd with Tom and Challenger. I love this loop, great for tempo work too, first time I've used it for that and it worked well.

Decent pace which increased after a hard session with Keiths group so thats pleasing. Calf and hip were both great but hip a bit tight now annoyingly

8 min reps before and after session

1st 8 mins 1.48 5.23 miling
2nd 8 mins 1.52 5.17 miling

Session intervals 18:07 [5] 3.72 mi (4:52 / mi)

Tough Hillsborough park session, hard loop particularly up the hill, fairly pleased with session as was napping in car before- I thought I was gonna have a stinker cos of the antibiotics

8 AM

Easy Running long 1:20:00 [3] 12.37 mi (6:28 / mi)
slept:7.0

Woke up early with toothache so just went out and got the run done. Left calf a little niggly. Tooth very sore, going dentist later. I know what people are thinking re: tooth, injuries etc.. "Dave's a big girl", the truth is, you are absolutely right.

Felt ok and gradually wound the pace up, a lovely morning
6 PM

Easy Running 38:57 [3] 5.87 mi (6:38 / mi)

I nipped over to Manchester for a bit of physio on the hip and he did a good job for me fingers crossed. Unfortunately, following the track last night and run this morning my left calf is very tight and a little swollen, could feel it on this run but nothing major. I iced it loads when i got to Tom and Michelles, but rotten old peas leaked onto their living room floor (I was mortified).

Ran with Mick Hill and a few Salford lads before they did the core class at the physio place, they were doing 60 so I turned back at 2.5 miles, getting a bit lost so jogged the last bit in as I panicked my way back to the car.

Due to the dentist trip I missed out on strength work as planned. Im on anti biotics as well, which Tom says are particularly strong so may need to play the next few days by ear training wise
