My back is absolutely killing this morning

Some amazing runs last night in the states, making me want to run even more!

Easy Running 58:58 [3] 8.58 mi (6:52 / mi)
ahr:144 rhr:35 slept:9.0

Very enjoyable run in the first real sunshine in 3 weeks, still very windy. Big group today. Majority of the run revolved around discussing Gemma Steels space cadetness.

Legs finally adapted to running again, as in hammys and calves not screaming, but do have rather a few niggles that i just want to document.
The first being my left foot which is a bit sore on the tib post tendon, but improving
Second my right heel has suddenly got very sore when I dorsi flex.

Right hammy tightened towards the end but was much better than a few days ago. I have been here before though, so I won't get too excited.
5 PM

Note
(rest day)

Felt a bit fucked so sacked off an afternoon session.
Bit concerned about this heel pain, its a neural pain

Easy Running 41:50 [3] 6.1 mi (6:51 / mi)

Crazy winds here atm and very raiiny, everyone was doing a session so me, steve and Hatts snuck off to the lake and ran in the woods to avoid the wind.

INitally legs felt good but hamstring really tightened towards the end. Left hammy also tight and foot, although better than expected is still sore

Really enjoyed running in the rain

Poor nites sleep last night as I appear to have been eaten alive by some form of bed bug, woke up ripping my own skin off, so bad I had to get in the shower!

Kipped on the couch wrapped up in my down jacket.

Boring cross train keeping HR just in aerobic zone

Easy Running 35:35 [3] 5.56 mi (6:24 / mi)
slept:9.0

Wanted to run this to heart rate to see how the return to running is progressing, but left it at home. Very windy down the lake but the snow has cleared.

Felt great running, but have a definite soreness in my left foot and I don't think I should run on it until its better, bit frustrating. Right hamstring tight

Stationary bike (Spinning) 1:00:00 [3]
ahr:125

Slipped getting out of the shower earlier and stirred my back up which is a shame, it also meant i couldn't go crazy on the bike this arvo.

Foot quite sore, may have to have another break from running, ankle stiff

Easy Running 38:33 [3] 5.59 mi (6:54 / mi)

In the words of Balotelli "Why always me".

Did a run round the lake this morning. Hamstring tight and left foot really sore.

More importantly, UKA doctor John Rodgers had a look at me this morning. I don't know if I mentioned it previously, but I've always had in the back of my mind, two worse case scenarios that I was scared this "injury" could be. One was a nasty disc problem, the other was AS.

Theres a lab in Font Romeu where u can get your bloods tested and just ask for what you want and in the first week, I very nearly went and got all the tests which would be taken in an investigation for AS. But I then came to my senses and told myself I was sensationalising it.

John pieced together my history and he feels that it the prolonged morning stiffness, SIJ area of involvement and S1 nerve root symptoms, coupled with the fact that this came following a sickness bug, could well be the onset of AS, or hopefully a lesser "seronegative Spondyloarthropathy."

I feel really pissed of that yet again the doctors and physios i've seen to this point have poo pooed me when I've raised these concerns, the exact same thing happened when I had the fatigue thing. Im also fucking terrified that it is AS as that is bye bye running dreams.

Anyway, Im paying for an MRI and blood tests out here, so I guess I'll know either way soon.
3 PM

Stationary bike (Spinning) 1:00:00 [3]
ahr:150

Decided to take a bit of frustration out on the bike.

Did the usual 5 mins standing up and sitting down in 3 sets of 4 reps, 1st set low resistance getting over 150 rpm with 1 min "on" and 30s "off"

Next minute the same but standing with more resistance, then the final 2 sets sitting with resistance and standing with hard resistance.

Got my blood tests back, showing no raised inflammatory markers. Doesn't completely rule out AS/spondlyarthrop but more suggestive of a disc bulge.

Spent the day absolutely terrified so feel a bit better now. A disc problem isn't ideal but I know how shitty AS can get for people. Fingers crossed.

Feeling un-enthused about training, and sore. So resting. DIfficult as the weight is increasing.

Easy Running 41:05 [3] 6.04 mi (6:48 / mi)
ahr:161 rhr:34 slept:8.0

This mornings run was on the pyrennees 2000 trail, a hilly rocky route. Everyone was doing 45 mins which was ideal and I went with the lead group which was mainly girls, they picked it up and I decided to run within my leg and was dropped.

I was shocked when i checked my HR it was bloody high despite fairly pedestrian pacing, but the most disappointing thing was that my right leg is no different. Something is trapping the nerve and every time I speed up I can feel the tension in it, this is why the hammy and calves keep spasming.

My back was a lot less stiff this morning and wasn't a problem running. So it must be the hip. There's an area of my glut which is totally fibrosed and i think this is the culprit, until that goes I don't think I'm going to be able to train.

Easy Running 39:55 [3] 5.43 mi (7:21 / mi)
ahr:138 slept:8.0

Run down at the lake, Im so glad I finally got chance to run there. Legs are generally very sore at the moment, its amazing how much a return to running hurts even when its not a lot of running.

Yesterdays treatments helped the back a great deal, but its is still super stiff in the joints. I wish it would go as I want to get rid of the nasty thoughts in my head as to what the source of the stiffness is
2 PM

Stationary bike (Spinning) 31:00 [3]
ahr:105

Unfortunately I felt really flat today. As part of my new running philosophy (when i actually get going) I've decided training is pointless when i feel flat, Ive been guilty of forcing my training for far too long, but I've now decided that doesn't mean I'm being lazy or not dedicated

So I didn't exert, just had a little spin and binned the planned hour.

I had a good first 3 weeks of training out here, and in most cycles its good to have an easier week, so this is it.

I have everything crossed that I'll be running properly soon, so I wanna get all the tightness sorted before that happens

Easy Running 30:01 [3] 4.19 mi (7:10 / mi)

Finally ran with company, although i got dropped by everyone.
Back still stiff and tight this am, but more alarmingly so were my quads on both sides, quite strange considering I did bugger all yesterday!

The problem certainly hasn't gone away, but its no more aggravated by easy running than cross training.

Really nice to run somewhere pretty as all my other runs have been loops in case i needed to stop

Had a really good massage from the UKA masseuse who very kindly offered to help out after i cooked her tea the other night, really good in the back.

Also had a it of a brain wave and got someone to mob my thoracic spine which seems to have taken off some pressure from my lumbar area. Fingers crossed

Easy Running 30:21 [3] 4.25 mi (7:08 / mi)
ahr:145 slept:9.0

Every form of cross training is causing one problem or another (AJ + XC Ski= left hip flexor, bike= stiffening back)

So I might now just try and ease into running. Back very stiff this morning but went easy (pace wise) hips feel tight.

Shit route because of bad snow, but I loved every second
3 PM

Core (Kenya) 30:00 [3]

Core class- lasted 60mins but prob only about 30 mins of exercise.

Stability definitely improving, but lower back and hamstring really sore. I couldn't face sitting on a bike as it makes it worse sometimes and after a bit of debate i decided to rest this afternoon.

I've done a fair bit the last few weeks so backing off may be wise for a few days anyway.

Easy Running 20:00 [3]

Laps of the snow covered track with Steve Vernon and his misses as he warmed up for his session.

Snow is waist deep in most runnable areas, which really messed up training for all the runners today, luckily the track was ok.

Steves missus was worried about falling on the ice so Helen Clitheroe lent her some Yak-Traks. After the run we had a chat about them, Helen said you could run on anything in them. I stated that it doesn't matter how good they are, I have a habit of falling on the ice and would defo slip in them.

I then walked off, with that the last thing i said, to my car to drive to the gym and promptly slipped and landed on my face, much to the amusement of the french team stood stretching. What a tit.

Run ok, Hamstring super tight.

Stationary bike (Spinning) 1:00:00 [3]
ahr:138

Standard session.

I can't get my heart rate any higher at the moment as it aggravates my back and leg. Im in a bit of limbo at the minute. May just start doing more running as nothing is easing it. Don't really know where to turn with it at the moment.

Back and hammy very tight

The day after the whole of Font Romeu stayed up all night partying to celebrate the end of the ski season and it is completely white. I've never seen snow storm like it, its pretty cool. But, I can't even get there car up the drive from the hotel so can't get to the gym. I was gonna rest tomorrow so just brought it forward. The runners are doing 75second laps of the car-park.

Back really tight, hamstring really tight. Shin fine. Twitching to start training now

Shin perfect. Right hamstring cramped up again.

Back stiff and sore all day long but can't feel it whern running, but the stiffness/soreness is te reason for the hamstring cramping.

Had a little practice yesterday, its tricky little contraption. Fell off a couple of times and unfortunately found it difficult to maintain a good rhythm for long enough to get my heart rate high enough. Was tempted to go on for longer but decided to leave it there.

Fingers crossed i'lll get a decent workout from it eventually-nice to exercise outside, albeit in the snow!

Aqua jog 52:45 [3]

Session with Dean Miller, a paralympic athlete who is also coached by Bud, nice to have company. He's not injured he's just sensible as he has CP and has to be careful he doesn't overdo the miles

I've enjoyed todays training and now I have acquired the use of a cross country skier which I will hopefully exercise on outside, which is all very positive.

Session was length warm up (4mins) then 5,4,3,2,1,1,2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2,1 all off 15 secs

Stability/balance 10:00 [3]

Very basic core exercises, trying to get things working properly again, lots of muscles have been de-activated with the pain/muscle spasm of recent months, amazing how poor i am at exercises which used to be easy- this is good news, it means there stuff I can work on which may help

Legs bums and tums (Inury prevention) 1:00:00 [3]

Some fat shit has broken the cross trainer at the gym, which is not ideal. The re are two gyms here, one which has great spin bikes, but then just weights equipment. Then another one which has shit spin bikes and an alright cross trainer.

Having already paid to get in I just worked on my ever expanding list of weak areas.

UKA got here a couple of days ago and Dobriskey left behind a XC ski machine so I'm gonna see if they'll let me use it, XC skiing supposedly is the hardest thing other than rowing and running, so could be a blessing, particularly as people have been using it outside.

Shin felt great today, couldn't fully straighten my right hamstring, from a 10 minute jog.
3 PM

Stationary bike (Spinning) 1:20:00 [3]
ahr:140

After this mornings disaster I planned 80 mins spinning then to jump straight into the pool for an AJ session, unfortunately as soon as i got into the pool it became apparent that my hamstring was not going to play. So i got out.

For the last few weeks, aside from my shin problem on the left leg, the muscles along the right hand side of my back have been very sore, they've gradually improved, but are still sore.

The lower back/SIJ joints are stiff to the point of feeling like an old man, Im shitting myself it may be permanent, but till have fingers crossed. This improves and relapses at will.

The medial hamstring and calf tendons have been very stiff and sore, but not affecting any training, but I had been trying to sort them out as, to run fast a tight hamstring is never a good thing.

But all this time, the main thing that has ruined my season thus far, was at bay, that is a real nasty muscle spasm in the lateral hamstring, and nerve pain. After 10 minutes of running, that was back.

Over the past 6 months it has allowed me to train at 75% and I did this never expecting it to go on this long. For it to come back form a 10 minute jog, after 4 weeks of no running...I m now rendered clueless. And really down. I can't handle not training properly for much longer.

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

10 AM

Legs bums and tums 40:00 [3]

My balance has completely gone. I'm so far away from where i was, which in a way is a good thing as it means threes lots to work at.

Ext digitorum tendon very sore on calf raises today which isn't ideal.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself, but lifted by some fantastic news, which has cheered me up
3 PM

Easy Running (Rehab run) 11:00 [3]

Very scared, I decided to just try it. The shin is still sore to touch, but actually held up ok- bit sore now.

Frustratingly and disappointingly the right hip/hamstring/calf tightened up almost immediately. When the fuck is this going to go?

rhr:37 slept:9.0 (rest day)

The guy who i go to for physio came out to FR today and very kindly had a look at me/gave me some treatment.

He reckons to try 10-15 mins running tomorrow. My rule was to have 3 days of pain free everything, but this hasn't happened yet. But, I trust him and am getting a bit fed up of all this cross training, so I think I will give it a whirl tomorrow and see what happens.

Going against my stubbornness and trying out some kinesio tape on my shin. I' ve developed a very "anti-KT" attitude, primarily as many people use it as a badge of honour, or even part of their racing kit, which gets on my grumpy little tits.

I also think some of the theory is a little bit bollocks. However, looking around there seems to be some justification in using it to offload tendon sheaths, so why not.

My shin is sore again today, which is really frustrating. We also went to book the swimming pool for another week and it is chocca block. We both need it atm as well, which means we need it for 2 hours as we only have one AJ belt.

This and losing the heart rate monitor, along with the garmin put me in a ridiculously bad mood. Im taking the bad mood and sore ankle as a sign I'm over-reaching, so resting today. It also mean Hatts can have the pool

We were told that a group had the keys for the "posh gym" at 8am and if we went along we could also use it. So we got there at the same time as a German coach who was setting up a circuit for his team. We beat his team arriving and he wasn't impressed haha.

After they warmed up we were allowed to use the Spinning bikes and i did 60 mins alternating 5 mins standing, 5 mins sitting.

The soundtrack to my work out was the coach's extensive bon Jovi collection which he was proudly playing through very loud speakers.
i enjoyed it.

Disappointingly my shin was a bit sore this morning, my back is still very sore and stiff, but in an acute way as opposed to chronic. This feels mainly in the lower lumbar/SIJ area and happened after I had a massive stretch/ mob the other day.

The back spasm has gone and the only pain there now is in the joint, i'm not sure about the right leg yet as I haven't really tested it.

Despite everything still hurting, i'm optimistic that I'm about to turn a corner. I hope so as I'm finding it really hard checking results all the time and seeing big runs from so many guys. Obviously i'm happy for them but I want to be in the mix!
