Slightly hungover plod- Legs not to bad but zero bounce or zip in them.
Gorgeous frosty morning so just enjoyed a plod around pines- lots of day dreaming about running

Running 46:01 [3] 6.25 mi (7:22 / mi)
ahr:117

We had so much planned but both Hatti and Sophie became inexplicably grumpy, then snot started pouring out of Hatt's nose. So I chucked Sophie in the bike trailer and took her swimming…or that was the plan, but shed totally passed out.

So I dropped her at my parents apartment at legged it for an easy run whilst everyone napped. Unfortunately my belly was still full from lunch but it was nice to do it without feeling anti social

A beautiful sunset

Session of 1 mile M, 5 x mile/90secs hard, 4 x 60s hills/jog down rec. 1 mile M.

Warmed up through Centre Parcs then sessioned on 2 laps of the Sherwood pines green loop.

Internal effort felt bob on, felt like i worked hard, HR also about right, sadly paced not great despite zero wind and hard underfoot.

Hey-ho- was pretty cold! Just getting through the next few weeks of sessions as mileage is the focus. Stunning crisp, cold day, very enjoyable

Running 31:58 [3] 6.1 mi (5:14 / mi)

Liverpool Cross Challenge.

Woke up with a continuation of the glut issue and a bit more snotty than the past few days (tooth feeling rattley again). Neither were bad enough to stop me heading over to Liverpool.

Warmed up with Connor and found out I'd insulted his mum previously after the National XC relays(GUTTED!!)

The conditions were pretty good underfoot save for a few drags of sticky, squelchy mud.

The gun went and immediately the guy behind me stood on my shoe and my foot came out…miraculously it slipped back in again and with a few more steps my foot worked back in…phew!

Connor's game plan was to not go off super hard…but he still shot off! Bastard! I was amazed how much I went backwards at the start- I just can't do it.

I slipped into a decent pace but still found myself getting stuck behind people, but on lap two things opened up and I just tried to pass people as much as possible. I caught Connor at about half way and kept on pushing, got a really big second wind but just don't have the pace to do anything with it. What was particularly frustrating was that in both muddy sections Iwas really worried I might lose my spikes (on both feet- they just didn't feel secure)..really need to find a way of keeping them on!

After a strong finish I wasn't sure where I finished, but was hoping for top 100. All hopes of top 60 were well out of the door, the field was completely stacked and I knew too many were ahead. I was happy with how I ran though and didn't have more on the day- I really enjoyed racing in brilliant conditions. The race felt like it last about 5 minutes, crazy.

On looking at the results I was 109th. I'm still really happy with how I ran and couldn't do much more, but there were guys in the top 60 who I beat in the summer…so the forever question of "what am I missing? continues.

But a great day out.

Lovely evening, looking at running photos on FB it was a great day to be out!!

IW- little bit tight still a bit snotty but relieved to note that the rattling sensation of my teeth which has threatened sending me to the dentists has subsided. A colleagues theory that it was my sinuses appears correct! Bizarre, felt like when i had an abscess a few years ago…eek.

4 PM

Running 1:06:21 [3] 9.18 mi (7:14 / mi)
ahr:125

HFW bit tired and achey, feeling a bit hungover today from one beer last night!

Tuesday Nov 22, 2016 #

Note

Felt tired when I woke up, weighed myself and was surprising lot over the expected weight- was feeling quite light- but I have been @feeding the cold"

Took forever to get out of the door through poor planning-then drove to Linacre arriving late- rain beating down and still not 100% I decided my heart wasn't in it this morning. Not like me to bin a run- so decided to listen to the devil on my shoulder

Feeling a bit better in myself and keen to go to track I think that is all I'll do today- but maybe a larger warm up.
6 PM

Running 43:02 [5] 6.9 mi (6:14 / mi)
ahr:152

Session of 600/1min, 400/ 200 jog

Wasn't sure whether this was the right move or not, but other than being a bit snotty and all symptoms worsened by being indoors all day, I felt better and wanted to try.

I felt good warming up and did a mile tempo which also felt fine so I was happy that it might not be a bad thing after all.

The first rep kicked off and I was at the back of the pack, but in touch and feeling good.

As the session progressed I got dropped more and more with each rep which increased the perception of fatigue but I'd only dropped my pace by a second!
Such is the special nature of the group we have at the moment, some very talented young lads.

I couldn't force the final rep psychologically or physically due to not wanting to push my luck with the cold.

A bizarre session-this is far and away the session I am least good at so I try not to miss it, tonights times were some of the best I've done, if not the best! What I have noticed is that although my times are similar if not slightly better than previous years, I feel more relaxed and less like I'm sprinting.

With regards to sefton I was a bit down-beat until I analysed the session, but I have to refer the wise words that I used in trying to convince Hatti that she should also run this weekend.

Its races like this that we really miss when we are injured and will really miss when we stop running or at least can't compete at the respective levels we are at now, so we should just savour taking part in them while we can!

Knowing me I'll be a miserable twat on Saturday evening… :)

9 AM

Running 32:59 [3] 4.63 mi (7:07 / mi)
ahr:134

Woke up feeling better than yesterday but still "ill".

I deliberated and then just decided to see how I felt running, the Dream ticket being to get the planned 14 mile in, Standing ticket was a 10 mile loop, and Row Z with limited view was to turn around and head back.

Initially I felt ok, but it felt laborious on anything resembling an incline. I checked the HR and it agreed. I ran another mile or so having adjusted the strap and added a little moisture, in case it was that. But all remained the same so I settled for Row Z.

At leas I got some running in. Planned day of tomorrow then hopefully jump back in for a taper week for Sefton. No pressure though, I don't think I'm in great shape atm so I'm not expecting anything there any how.

Feel a bit better writing this in the evening-pleased I didn't continue. A few years ago I would have done the long run, some strides and an hour in the gym…and then eaten nowt. Twat.

Saturday Nov 19, 2016 #

Note
(rest day)

Grrr. I got progressively more ill as the evening went on and woke up this morning feeling achey and viral. Defo no running today

Very annoyed with myself but yesterday my symptoms were very mild and had built up since Monday when i felt knackered- so I assumed I was almost over it.

Plenty of people on Strava trying to "run their cold off' and not making it worse so can't be too hard on myself but it has to be lesson learned for next time. Would have been pretty lucky to survive this winter without a cold, theres loads flying around!

Bit frustrated as training was just starting to click and I was really looking forward to sefton next week, not so sure its worth trekking all that way now. Could do with a race soon though..

Note

Got dressed for run number two, having left work early (Annual leave) due to my nose constantly streaming.

Feel well in myself but realised I was being a dick so got changed again and drove home. Shame not to hit 100 for the week but pointless chasing numbers.

I didn't expect it to get worse but I think this mornings session was the catalyst

Took a few hours of annual leave for a day light XC sesh. Woke up with the cold a bit worse, but remains a head cold with RHR normal.

After some deliberating I decided to get the session done. I'd been looking forward to it all week.

It took place in a few rutted dog walking fields behind a local school which I run through on most of my Linacre routes. I've been wanting to do a session here since I was injured for that long period of time. There are a few back fields and then a sloping, exactly 400m grass loop with mud, rough grass and a few "kicker" lumps to get over- great XC training. I geekily created a strava segment for it entitled "field of dreams".

Anyway, session was 15mins M effort/2mins, 8 x 800 Hard/75s, 15mins M.

Soon into the session the weather turned to freezing and driving sleet/wind so it wasn't pleasant. I'd be lying if I said I smashed it, merely "got through it".
I changed direction on the 800m reps (performed on the field of dreams) every 2 reps and its interesting what an effect it had on times.

An enjoyable run though-legs a lot better than i expected post track. Fields starting to get very muddy.

HR very low. Maybe need to put a bit more effort in, or could be part of being a bit tired

Falling asleep at the wheel on the way down to track after a fairly shitty day at work.

Running intervals 54:09 [5] 7.65 mi (7:05 / mi)
ahr:152

Session of 1 mile M pace, 20 x 400/60s, 1 mile M pace

A get through session for a number of reasons (thick head, knackered and a tight hammy and glut.)

Fortunately it was a seemingly fast night conditions wise and a group was smashing it so the sessions ticked along nicely and a felt controlled running decent times. I'd like to have been closer to the front and a few seconds quicker but I can't grumble in such a talented group

Morning plod with Hatts from my folks. Really nice to run with her and actually talk properly without us being used as a climbing frame.

Really pleased to announce that resetting the latest fenix and doing the initial satellite link under the clear moonlit sky on thurs appears to have done the trick, which is great. (Whether the clear sky makes a difference I'm not so sure-but was worth a try)

Paces appeared to be exactly as perceived despite running predominantly in woodland. Woohoo!

Left glut sore form yesterday
6 PM

Running 34:26 [3] 5.0 mi (6:53 / mi)

Running intervals 1:02:12 [5] 9.67 mi (6:26 / mi)
ahr:152

Took annual leave to get a daylight XC session in-headed to holmbrook after dropping Sophie at nursery.

Session of 2(15mins M effort/2mins, 6*400/60s)/60s

Gorgeous mornin for it and a nice mixture of mud and runnable grass. Ready to pop at the end and couldn't have gone any harder but pretty clear from the sections on flat, fast ground that I've a long way to go Fitness wise.

Tempo 1-5.51 miling HR 153
Tempo 2- 5.56 miling HR 158

400s felt flat out but about 10BPM lower than when doing them in a group at the track. Don't see how I could have got more out on my own though.

I feel really strong which is great but I just can't go fast
4 PM

Running 28:28 [3] 4.0 mi (7:07 / mi)

Running 1:12:36 [3] 10.12 mi (7:10 / mi)

2 and 2/3s of Linacre, clock-wise and anti clockwise.

I need to find a few more routes, but I love running here and its all the same in the dark anyway, hoping regular hilly runs will do me some good.

Goal is to run on the roads minimally this winter as I found the routes soul destroying last year.

Did some uphill strides along the way. Really enjoyed it despite feeling flat and not up for it beforehand.

Lovely evening with clear skies and a moonlighting

Spent a fair portion of the night checking my phone for election results. Knew the outcome would be as was, but can't believe it. Anyway. Adding insult to injury I couldn't wait to run in the snow and was gutted to see zero white, still ran in my trail talons out of stubbornness

Plodded into work, alarmed at slow pace. Relieved on arrival that the new garmin had come up short, then annoyed that the new garmin had come up short
5 PM

Running 1:14:55 [3] 10.25 mi (7:19 / mi)
ahr:124

Knackered from a poor nights kip and also one of the most bizarre meetings I've ever been to, which was quite stressful.

Home from work the usual route except again the garmin came up short showing 7.40 pace on very flat sections when I was clipping along ok.

Very frustrating. I'm not at peak fitness but neither am I running as poorly as this suggests (bit of a relief re: last nights session)

Persevere until the weekend then hopefully reset and find satellites under a clear daylight sky, if no joy then I just have to resign myself to the fact that this was a bad purchase

Got word that most of the group wouldn't be down and with the forecast being for icey rain I didn't fancy trekking over to pay a fiver then drive bike sopping wet and cold…

So I legged it home and picked up my head torch and went to the lake.

Today was the first run out of the 3rd replacement Fenix, the session was 1 mile M, 5 x mile hard/60s, 4 x 400/60s, 1 mile M.
Except I cocked up when setting the session up on my phone and wondered why my 3rd 400 felt a slog! It turned out I'd set 2 on the watch, so I relaxed into M pace then did an extra 2 400 efforts.

Don't know what to make of the session really. It felt right effort wise but paces were pretty disappointing, I was fairly certain I was running quicker. I can't keep blaming the garmin, so maybe I'm just not that fit…but it is interesting that the final rep was much quicker for the same HR. Also some of the miles started from mine and Andy Cs usual starting point and finished quite a bit further than normal.

Who knows, who cares. Maybe I just wasn't running as quick due to the tricks the dark plays on your speed perception. A decent volume session, so no harm in not completely smashing it anyway.

Light headed after and avoided the rain, so it did what it said on the tin. Looking forward to a snowy run in tomorrow.

Survived a night out with a big drinker last night and didn't drink too much, which was great.

Felt a bit negative after moaning about yesterday. I really need to start piping down when I'm not happy (which is after most races!) Spent much of todays run thinking about how I might go about changing that.

Todays run was all about just running and I decided to go from home and put together a route I'd been thinking about for a while.

It took in village trails and then headed out along to Rowsley via Beeley woods and back through Chatsworth.

Really enjoyed it, bloody cold at times though.

My final thoughts post run were; "do I continue with the goals I set for myself or do I reign them in?" Presently most of my goals are a bit out of reach and lead to me being disappointed a lot.

I also looked at my training for next week and for some reason I was surprised to see I'd only done 2 decent weeks in this block so I should be pleased with yesterday in fairness-I just wanted to do more for the team.

I decided to keep dreaming and just try to keep my thoughts to myself (but maybe continue to be honest/moan on here)

So…Next goal is Sefton….target top 60 (very ambitious)

Running 16:22 [3] 3.05 mi (5:22 / mi)

National XC relays. One of my fave races of the year, but never really a race I do well at, if I want to run quick over short stuff I really need to get the speed work in and it comes too early for me. Still love it and it is the race where I met my wife so we enjoy it (for now).

My goal today was to run sub 16 (prev. best about 16.25), I wanted to keep us in the medal hunt and I wanted to show myself that my running had turned a corner.

The stars appeared in line, Andy had a stormer coming home in 1st in a strong field. Bertie had opened a gap when I saw him! Better still, I felt amazing warming up and bang up for it.

Berti came back in 6th and I set off with company from Gateshead and Darren Deed to chase. I went out as hard as I felt comfortable and didn't seem to lose too much ground so I maintained pace. Then Shane Robinson who I know well came on my shoulder and we ding donned for much of lap one.

I felt strong and pushed on into the woods on lap two but a classy pack of Scott Overall and Dan Cliffe came past. I decided to go for it and follow them in the heat of the moment I turned to Shane and said, "come on mate, lets fuck overall up". In hindsight, that was a bit gay, but I though it funny at the time.

Amazingly I didn't seem to lose much more ground on overall and despite feeling ready to vom I picked up and ran really strong to the finish. I was so pleased. I think i kept us in the top 10 at least. I then looked at my watch to see 16.22 and I can't help but concede I was a bit gutted, it felt so strong.

This does often happen in this race on reflection…perhaps I need to dive more deeply, but i haven't done much training yet and it is my fastest run, so loads of positives. I just want to be better.

Aside from this we were 8th overall which is so exciting as a Bertie and I are only just back on it, Tommy had an injury last weeks o barely ran and loads of guys were missing today who could have replaced me and even filled more teams.

The other teams also had some cracking performances and the Junior men had some great performances too. A very exciting time for us!!

Pre- work "shakeout". Lots of people not enjoying this term on Strava lol, I feel it important to state that when I use it, I do so with tongue in cheek! For some unknown reason (possibly similar to that of others) the term does annoy me!

Anyway, I did the usual morning loop around the lake with some strides. Felt quite good but my glut is an issue and will be for some time I think, which is frustrating.

I'm super excited for the relays, I've never known such strong teams and we have so many people missing! I wish I was in better shape, but I can't really change that.

Generally feeling knackered at the moment think its just a combo of finding the new job (which amazingly I'm a year into) pretty challenging and getting used to the darker nights/colder weather. But after this weekend I'm hoping to ramp the training and take my weight issues a little more seriously!

Did a few strides then headed for a massage. Can't help but feel frustrated that a problem which I thought had finally cleared up, has come back so randomly and feeling much worse. Hey-ho..thats running.

In other news I sent back the garmin Fenix 3 for a 3rd time and received my replacement today…in the shape of a Garmin Fenix Saphire Titanium, worth double the value. Result.

Having said that, its a bit flash for me, I don't need a metal strap and the Sapphire screen always seemed a little overkill to me! Nice to have a treat though, hope it works

Morning plod, despite going to bed on time last night I woke up feeling absolutely knackered.

Just plodded around Linacre in the pleasant drizzle
6 PM

Running intervals 33:32 [5] 6.0 mi (5:35 / mi)
ahr:154

12 x 2 mins/1min.

Tried to nap for 5 mins in the car park I felt that knackered! Came to nothing.

Just decided to took in for this session and not force it (did try to take every 3rd rep, but people kept coming back)

Garmin (the good one) continues to be way out but from where we were finishing it looks as though paces were around 4.48 consistently.

Running warm up/down 30:30 [3] 4.1 mi (7:26 / mi)
