Easy Running 36:02 [3] 5.03 mi (7:10 / mi)
ahr:132 slept:8.0

Plod into work, hamstring a bit tight but not sore this morning.

I felt really tired all day despite a day off yesterday, possibly due to two late nights this weekend
6 PM

Session hills 30:00 [5] 5.04 mi (5:57 / mi)
ahr:158

Session of 10 x 3 mins. The first 2 efforts taking me from the bottom of Abbey lane to the top, then I went onto the Eccy woods field and did 6 efforts around there.

The first was predom. flat/downhill but then that set me up nicely for the remaining 6 efforts to be with running the width of the pitch and uphill.

I then went out onto the road and continued up just past Tiger's rugby club for the final 2 efforts.

I was on my arse throughout, particularly on effort 9, but for some reason I find myself wondering if I'm pushing hard enough in these sessions, its hard to judge as your quads get progressively tired/ sore. Oh well, it may not get me super fit but it certainly won't make me unfit and I've been wanting to try it for a long time now.

Lap of Milllhouses then to the bottom of Abbey Lane. After reps, a cruise down through Eccy woods.

Disappointed that you have to pay to park in Millhouses now. Sad times. I had two wees in order to get my moneys worth

slept:9.0 (rest day)

Tired from late night watching opening ceremony followed by a late night celebrating o'Toole's birthday.

I was amazed by the opening ceremony, I thought it would be really cringey. But I actually think it made us look quite cool!

From work down the "work trail" then to Holmebrook park and a lap of the pond before heading back home.

Baps out the moment I left work and got home completely covered in flies and I spent most of the run hacking up a few flies which I inhaled.

Wouldn't have it any other way a great evening. Really tough day t work though, feeling shagged

Hammy nd back very tight, hammy eased off a bit.

Weight gain after lots of beer and lots of popcorn
6 PM

Session hills 30:00 [5] 5.06 mi (5:56 / mi)
ahr:160

Session from the bottom of the hill at Rivellin Valley up past Rivellin Dam and then just past Fort Beattie.

I have just completed my first 6 week of planned training, albeit on the terms of the injury and not my terms. The next block is a hill block and hopefully fits in nicely with the current thought process around my injury, in that my Hammy's are overloaded and my arse isn't firing. I think this is banded around far too often, but I can see the thought process behind it with me.

I stuggle to use my gluts in flat running, but can use them quite well when hill running, hopefully this training will help get me back on track in varying ways.

Session of 10 x 3mins/ 90s jog back. Seducing and not raping the pace, but on reflection a little disappointed with heart rates, but was scared of blowing up, particularly in the heat and wind

Session long 1:44:42 [3] 16.15 mi (6:29 / mi)
slept:9.0 weight:154lbs

Headed to Clumber Park. On arrival I was gutted to see that Race for life was on, but I don't think I saw it once when I got going. When I got out of the car my leg was super tight- I almost binned the run, but it eased off as I got going.

Did tempo of 2,4,6,8,6,4,2, off equal recovery at easy run pace with no stops in the running. At times I was limited by the leg mainly, at other times it completely loosened off and I was running free- strangely this happened at about mile 13. So strange.

Bloody love Clumber and the National Cylce route which links it to Sherwood Forest, absolutely amazing venue for running.

Lower hamstring really sore on both sides, but hips felt really loose after a long stretch last night.

Absolutely pissing it down, wore a white long sleeved top and lost my battle with the rain, arriving at work with what can only be described as the Sunderland strip, much to the amusement of everyone at work. Nearly took my top off on the run in, my nipples were that painful.
4 PM

Easy Running 57:14 [3] 8.28 mi (6:55 / mi)

Legs a bit better than this morning. A real shame that they are hurting as it was a great evening tonight and I was really enjoying the run. Would have done a slightly longer loop if legs were ok.

HFW then up the Linacre trail then home

Hamstring really shit today sadly. Had to bin morning run it was that sore. Just being a stubborn dick head basically. Last week I thought it was improving.

Feeling fitter by the day frustratingly, out of ideas with hammy really tight medially and literally around the knee

5 PM

Easy Running 1:14:34 [3] 10.6 mi (7:02 / mi)

From work to Linacre and full lap, then home.

Hamstring mega tight unfortunately, obviously have myself to blame, but I'm trying to come out of this injury by managing it. Running and focusing on gluts for extension appears to be helping. Im also doing lots of strengthening but can't be arced documenting it.

Shame about the hammy as if it wasn't for that it would have been "one of those runs" really enjoyed it, all things considered.

Spoilt it by coming home and having a few beers, can't wait to feel in shape as I never feel like drinking when thats the case.

Shin becoming more bothersome- out of ideas for that one- rest for 8 weeks didn't help

5 PM

Easy Running warm up/down 29:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:15 / mi)

Warm up around the xc course at Mt St Mary' (very good)
Warm down from Queens park having been picked up by Hatti as I was late talking to the head coach at the school - decent guy, very accommodating

Session intervals 29:12 [5] 6.0 mi (4:52 / mi)

Session on the track at Mount. Been looking forward to trying it out and decided tonight was the night, before I start hill rep training.

Had a good long chat with the coach down there-Keith Newton, who was very accommodating and gave me a map of the XC course and talked me through the set up.Whilst training (there were some juniors down there too), he played music over the tannoy Really fun- shame Hallamshire decided against using it, its 2 quid a go and some fantastic training options around it.

Session of 3(1600/90s, 4x400/30s) 90s

4.53, 70, 71, 71, 72
5.01, 71, 72, 71, 72
5.02, 71, 72, 72, 71

Blowing at the end, leg better than expected through out, but very tight afterward, trying where possible to use gluts when tired but only able to really focus on them on hills

6 AM

Easy Running 28:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Despite being ultra organised and buying a weeks worth of food, so I can run to work everyday, I forgot my swipe card so couldn't deliver it to work on sunday as planned, so had to get up early, run then drive in.

Cant even remember the run as I was that sleepy

Shin sore
5 PM

Easy Running 1:03:29 [3] 9.35 mi (6:47 / mi)

Really nice run after work trying out a route that just about works in length from work along Newbold road to Holmebrook valley park then Linacre and home

Focusing on using my gluts on any uphills, seems to be offloading my hamstring. Definite weakness in the right glut, could be chicken and egg, but will see if it helps strengthening it

Sunday Jul 15, 2012 #

11 AM

Easy Running long 1:47:55 [3] 16.0 mi (6:45 / mi)
ahr:136 slept:9.0

Lovely run around Sherwod Pines, occasionally veering out for longer loops. Trying to extend from gluts as opposed to hamstrings on climbs which meant that despite being very sore on waking this morning the hammy was no worse by the end of the run. Need to bear this in mind.

Left shin bothersome towards the end.

Saturday Jul 14, 2012 #

8 AM

Easy Running warm up/down 30:05 [3] 4.13 mi (7:17 / mi)
weight:156lbs

Warm up around Endcliffe then headed around Bingham for warm down, bumped into Pete and Hannah and had one of those, do I stop and talk or would they rather just keep running moments. I figured they would probably want to keep running, perhaps faster having seen me, so left them to it

Weight is yo yo-ing but I am getting a bit porky now. Have done a lot of eating out, eating lots and ringing lots as feeling sorry for myself, now is the time to start being careful again.
9 AM

Race tempo 16:12 [5] 3.08 mi (5:16 / mi)

I raced the park run flat out, but as part of a tempo session.
Was a bit disappointed with the time as I thought i ight see progress and was having a good battle upfront with a young lad, it felt like we were running at a good pace.

I was in third til the top of the first climb then moved into second as the guy originally in second was running me wide where possible and getting on my tits. The leading lad despite being very small made himself very big in the middle of the path so decided to surge in front to give my self a chance of running better lines.

We then ding donned until the second climb and then I went for it and just ran scared- getting heckled from some bloke bollocking us for running on the road. I see his point but its our risk and we would be more hazardous to the kids and petit ladies running if we went charging down the pavement on the second lap. Really enjoyed the race, shame about the time.

Session tempo 16:00 [4] 2.9 mi (5:31 / mi)

Had about 4-5 mins to have a chat get registered and recover then did 2 x 8 mins/ 2mins tempo.

Strangelt my legs felt lighter the second time. Didn't go nuts, just ran comfortably hard
4 PM

Easy Running 42:37 [3] 6.04 mi (7:03 / mi)
ahr:116

From home to Linacre, experimenting with trying to avoid overloading my right hamstring.
Left shin is creeping back into the mix, the little shit

Friday Jul 13, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

My plan today was to run twice, the second being Barlow 10k.

y day started by forgetting to set my alarm meaning I woke at 0810 (I start at 0830) so obviously missed my first run.

My leg has been killing last few days particularly after my elongated run last night. i rocked up to the 10k which I only planned to do as tempo and saw that there were about 5 people there, it was pissing it down and the pub Hatt and I planned on having tea at dent start serving food until next week.

I decided that I couldn't really be arsed and went home. I would defo have done it if my leg was ok thought

Easy Running 36:41 [3] 5.0 mi (7:20 / mi)
ahr:128 slept:8.0

IW
Gorgeous morning, feeling a bit fat from a big sushi pig out with Challenger and Tom.

Had another stand off with the swan and its signets, the swan won and I took the scenic route
5 PM

Easy Running 1:11:18 [3] 10.65 mi (6:42 / mi)
ahr:134

Decided to check out the Chesterfield canal on the way home and was not disappointed it awesome.

Unfortunately it goes in the wrong direction and once I decided to head home I realised I was further out that I thought. So a planned 8 miel route became much more.

CV wise I feel better each day, but tonight was the wrong night to get lost, my leg ceased up again and feel exactly as I did in the first few weeks of this injury. So frustrating. Go bored of being in pain all day and when I run.

Felt shagged after the run, could have done without it being too long

Easy Running 43:46 [3] 6.04 mi (7:15 / mi)

My shin is sore again. other than that a nice run

Easy Running 1:00:06 [3] 8.53 mi (7:03 / mi)
ahr:128

Quality run with Challenger and Tom from my gaff to Holmebrook up to linacre and back home. Much faster than normal with Tom leading the charge. Great to see Challenger running again. Optimism regarding my leg quickly dwindled as it has been very tight ever since

Easy Running 37:45 [3] 5.08 mi (7:26 / mi)
ahr:125 slept:8.0

Headed to Manchester for a spot of shopping- planning on doing a session in Woodbank Park en route. Weather was attrocious and after one stride Hatt didn't feel her leg could handle a session, so we both binned our sessions I just did an easy one and will train tonight
6 PM

Easy Running warm up/down 37:30 [3] 5.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
ahr:123

Unfrotunately we got stuck in traffic from Manchester so the journey home was 2 hours. I was hoping to head to Spinkhill to try the track out, but it would have been too late. The track behind our house was water logged so I couldn't christen that either.

So I ran to Queens park and did the session round the cricket pitch with the on-looking local youths throwing beer at me/trying to race me. Nothing a broad Barnsley "FUCK OFF"! couldn't solve, I sure showed them!

Session intervals 30:35 [5] 6.0 mi (5:06 / mi)
ahr:165

Session of 6 x mile/ 90s

5.08 HR 161
5.10 HR 167
5.03 HR 168
5.05 HR 167
5.09 HR 167
5.00 HR 169

Id be lying if I said I wasn't pleasantly surprised by this session. i felt knackered all day, my back was sore from the drive and i could feel it through out. But most importantly, at no point did my leg cramp up, which is a first for a very, very long time and is probably why the times were considerably improved. I won't get too excited, but despite being by no means spectacular its been long time since iI've had a positive running experience!

Now I need to work out what I have done differently to allow the leg not to tighten

Monday Jul 9, 2012 #

12 PM

Easy Running 1:02:15 [3] 8.6 mi (7:14 / mi)
ahr:121

Stopped off at the Forest of Dean on our drive back from Chepstow- disnt realise it was so close as would have spent the rest of te week there, I've always wanted to go. It didn't disappoint and Hatt and I had a really nice run around.

Received my MRI results and the consultant reports "no significant findings"

Although pleased nothing major going on (particularly as las night I had a very nasty dream about it all) in pretty gutted that I have no examination for the pain I'm in and the fact that I haven't trained properly for almos 9 months.

I guess it's a dysfunction thing. I'm gonna have a think about the 3 months off. I'd really rather not

Sunday Jul 8, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Where possible from now on I plan to take a Jonathan Edwards approach to training and make Sunday my rest day- not for religious reasons.

Worked well today as we're in Chepstow for a family golf weekend.

Back really stiff/sore this morning

11 AM

Session long 1:47:15 [3] 16.0 mi (6:42 / mi)
ahr:151 slept:9.0

Planned to drive to Poolsbrook park, run to Rother Valley and do 3(10mins/2min) tempo then run back. Unfortunately there was a n event on and no where to park. We were about to run out of petrol so using sat nav I got to the nearest petrol station and we were almost back home again.

With my back sore from being in the car for an hour I spat my dummy out and drove home and almost rested. Then the sun came out and my back felt ok so I decided to get this out of the way, we're off on a golf weekend with Hatts family so training opportunities could be limited.

I ran from home around Linacre then up to Queens Park where I went straight into the session trying to keep pace between reps honest.

Unfortunately despite feeling the best I've felt for ages for the first 8 miles, my legs completely spasmed after the first rep. So disappointing.

Wanted to do between 9-11 miles so decided to use it as an exploratory mission. Headded out to Walton woods for an explore and after initial euphoria, was ultimately a little disappointed, very very boggy atm and most of the trails are a little unrunnable. Big shame as it promised lists from the initial trail.

Chesterfield Golf course looks exciting though for winter. Still an enjoyable plod, but cut it short as back was a bit sore

Session at Queens park, fast becoming one of my favourite training venues, despite being 400m, its in such a nice setting it never gets boring. Looking forward to being able to do it justice at some point.

Session of 10x 1k/90s Aiming to cruise the first 7 and pick up the last 3. Also aiming never to look at the watch- love the new Garmin allowing you to plan these sessions so you can just switch off and run

3.14, 3.20, 3.22, 3.16, 3.14, 3.16, 3.14, 3.08, 3.09, 3.09- don't know what happened on reps 2-3

Most pleasing was that I was running within leg discomfort and CV wise I had quite a lot more to give. But leg/back has been quite bad of late, don't see it getting better any time soon.

Back gluts and legs so sore on waking. Decided just one run today. Stretching doesn't work on this and in fairness the legs feel ok when running and the back just tight. Pretty convinced its neural. Pace limited by back stiffness

Was a really enjoyable run, bit frustrating I couldn't go longer but back was getting so tight I figured I should be sensible. Shame as Hatts and I plan to eat out the next two nights and have a few drinks to celebrate a really successful year off and i planned to earn my indulgence

Met up with Jason for a run round Fairholmes/derwent.

Back and legs really sore and stiff. Back actually feels better when running, but as it tightens my leg pain gets wore, towards the end I felt silly for going so long. But as I've said, I'm just gonna keep going til I get scan results.

Miserable weather and I have never seen so many cyclists as on the journey out. TDF fever kicking in. Nearly hit a few by accident on my drive out as one or two think they own the roads
