Fab Abs and T-shirt arms (Core Week 4 session 4) 20:00 [3]

Tomorrow sees the first day of August and a shake-up of the fab abs routine, which I am excited about, bored of these exercises and ready for the next batch
4 PM

Cycling 1:15:00 [3] 21.0 mi (16.8 mph)

Binned a group ride with Kent, Fishywishy and Thakey-baby as it is my last day off work and the forecast was rain for the afterwork ride we had planned.

Sadly when I woke the rain had already started and never stopped for more than 20 mins. I couldn't be arsed with 2hours 30 in the rain so tweaked my training a bit.

Not a fan of back to back sessions, but I think in cycling you can get away with it more.

So..on the turbo with cyclocross videos in the back ground I did 15 x 45s/45 on resistance 7 biggest gear.

With warm down either side, knees still a bit grumbly but improving

Cycling hills 2:18:36 [5] 37.0 mi (16.0 mph)

Session on Beeley.

Spent a lot of time faffing during warm up as cleat position was awful- finally got it sorted after lots of faffing

Session went ok- used running Garmin as that can be calibrated for sessions- just as well as bike Garmin appears to have packed in

Cycling long 3:13:33 [3] 54.0 mi (16.7 mph)

Local sportive, quite short but some decent hills
Decided to roll with the club but attack the climbs and not add any further mileage.

Pretty pleased as I effectively was one of 3 guys leading the club train throughout and it was nice to gauge my hill climbing against others.

Some terrifying sections of washed out pebbles/stones which lead to a series of punctures on one stretch of road

Looking forward to tomorrows rest day

Couldn't be arsed this morning, found an amazing pub near us last night and was a bit hunger this morning (off 3 pints). The week of training and indulging is catching up.

Had planned 10 x pendulum hills but the road is covered in loose stones from the rain the other day so descending is treacherous.

"Headed" to Monsal for 8 x the HC/ roll down recovery.

Decided to just get up it and let the hill do the work. Sadly at 6 I felt I'd done enough so headed home.

Happy with the weeks training with some good efforts, some miles and some weights, it can't all be quality

Fab Abs and T-shirt arms (Core 1 Week 4 July) 20:00 [3]

Cycling tempo 2:06:30 [3] 36.25 mi (17.2 mph)
ahr:137

Knackered, into the wind and bike squeaking a lot due to poor maintenance therefore times not the best

4 long hill reps

1- Cutthorpe classic
2- Col du Wigly
3- Loads Road
4- Beeley

Good times considering.

Training hard this week but eating lots of very indulgent food and drinking lots of beer so I think its being fuelled accordingly (getting a belly)

After this week its operation bran flakes and laxatives

Cycling long 2:28:00 [3] 42.5 mi (17.2 mph)

Nice and easy. Kent and I nominate one hill each wed for targeting, he chose Sir William Hill.

I set off and felt shite. I then stopped for my 5th pee and stirred a wasp nest, getting stung. Te wasps guarding my bike for a while as I stared at the bike wondering what to do.

I finally got back on struck and the bike was very squeaky as I clearly hadn't looked after it well enough after getting soaked yesterday.

On approaching Sir Bill I wanst sure how it would go but I went for it. Its not a one gear kind of hill and as it dropped in gradient I looked to get on the big ring and disaster struck as my chain came off. I managed to get it going again, but was certain it had had disastrous time consequences.

As it turned out I was lucky and got a 3rd placing, but I'm hungry for the KOM now! Maybe me and Dave can do it again next week, as he had a mare on it on Monday and went off too hard…

Cycling long 4:11:33 [3] 67.0 mi (16.0 mph)
ahr:120

Long ride
Planned on going for 4 hours and including 2 HC efforts, Cressbrook hand Mam Nick,

Sadly at the precise moment I turned down Monsal Head some old bloke, who was very friendly started talking to me and offered to ride with me to Edale.

I said this sounded good and at the bottom of the climb is aid, "right, I've been looking forward to this enjoy…" and set about smashing it.

I got 2nd place overall and 9th on the longer bit. i wasn't sure where it ended and also wanted to wait for the guy. So I stopped took a piss, rode back to find him and never saw him again. I did ask another cyclist if he'd seen him- which he hadn't.

Me and the new cyclist then stuck up a conversation and ended up riding the next 3 hours together which was grew, including giving Man Nick a good thrashing, where I placed fourth- I was chuffed to bits with this.

Avery fun ride

Post work to Monsal Head.

Planned 10 reps off roll down recovery up the HC.

The first effort suggested that 10 would be ambitious, so I decided to get to 8 and make a decision.

On the 6th rep my legs had gone so I decided to call it a day and head back- it was clear it was a decent enough session.

I felt a bit of a whip until I got to Beeley Hill climb which I needed to get up to get home and here I hit a glycaemic low- with no snacks. It was here I was pleased with my decision to bail!

My goals is to race this hill climb comp in september- its very popular and lined with supporters. Today this was replicated by a hen party who cheered me every time I got to the top- it is no coincidence that when they lost interest, so did i!

Recoveries worked out to be 60s
Effort times were
2.02
2.18
2.30
2.39
2.35
2.46

Next time i will pace it better and aim for 8-10- nether the less, decent session with 15 mins of effort

Aaaaargh!! I'm such a bell end! But you knew that already.

Session of 3 x long hills.

The chosen hills were wigley, loads and Harewood.

I stopped for a pee before col du wigley and completely nailed it, felt amazing, got to the top… and yet again I hadn't started my flaming garmin from the pea break. Gutted!

In the spirit of todays tour stage I went straight back down the hill and hit it again, half way up.. chain came off! I managed to get it on quick and was 10 seconds off the KOM- very frustrating.

Then I headed over to Harewood and hit it hard coming 3rd overall- In all a decent session, I thought i'd lost fitness from the 2 weeks off but this was a confidence boosting session

Cycling long 2:46:40 [3] 46.0 mi (16.6 mph)
ahr:119

Headed out towards Bradwell to take on the Bradwell Beast.
Dave Kent and I have decided that the wednesday ride will be a condo. paced ride, but we will take it in turns at picking one decent hill to tackle and give it some welly.

Dave picked the Bradwell beast, but get midday to bail on the ride. I decided to go ahead. I bumped into Al Ward at stonily middleton and rode with him for a bit, before he headed up Sir William and I headed via Hathersage to get the miles in.

I got to Bradwell and went for it up the beast, half way up a car got up my arse ( a very narrow road) but I kept going, her incessant beeping gave me a Tour De France feel. After a few minutes I quickly realised I hadn't quite considered how tought he climb was and started digging in.

I got back in the saddle contemplating taking it easy as I had popped, when a figure emerged atop the hill "GOOOOOO ON LAD!!!" shouted Alan. FFS…no where to hide, so I got out f the saddle and cracked on.

Alan then invited me back to his for a drink (which meant back down the hill and up again ) I politely declined and headed home. This wa a struggle as I am not finding this heat fun with 2 bonks in as many days!

Pleasingly I got the KOM.

5 min recovery then
4(5mins/4mins) on Beeley.

Died on my arse, a combo of the heat, unfitness and weight gain.

20 seconds off my best and a long way of the KOM.
My main reason for attempting a few KOMs atm is to suss out the quickest way to the to (seated vs. standing)
In particular on Beeley as I have entered the hill climb race. The KOM on here is tough.

Right knee still niggly, have tweaked the bike this evening, hoping this helps. Getting fed up of being in pain everywhere

Bottle the HC frustratingly. partly due to uncertainty regarding my feet and partly as the logistics were proving a nightmare.

Decided instead to do 3 x long hills, using Harewood, Wigley and Beeley.

Using new shoes- the old ones were size 12, this were size 11 wide fit and my best bike I went hard up Wigley, so hard that I was at the top so quick, when I looked down at the garmin to get a rough gauge of my time I realised I'd not restarted it after my pee, so I'll never know if it was a KOM or not.

I headed to Harewood and hit it had dgettign a pb and a few KOMs on some segments but not the long effort.

After this it was clear that my cleats were in a poor position still and I didn't want to make my feet worse so I headed in.

Feet have been sore since. Very frustrating, not sure of my next mood. I currently have 2 pairs totalling 260 qui (of which I do not have)

Nice to be riding hard on the bike agin, hope I'm back on track soon

A hectic day doing jobs before we go away for a golf weekend with the in laws, which i'm not excited about.

Managed to trai early before spending the day shopping for and assembling some bits and bobs for the garden and house.

Foot allowed a bit more effort today but was grumbling in the afternoon and sadly I managed to drop an entire picnic bench on my shin leading me to actually test to see if it was broken. It isn't, but it hurts.

My Hill climb debut was set to be this wednesday, I doubt I'll make the startline sadly

My thinking is to try and salvage some fitness with short sessions at threshold effort, not overloading the foot and not doing too much duration wise

6 x 5mins/1min with 5 mins warm up down- outside, looking at my lvoely garden

Legs bums and tums 30:00 [3]

I love my body.

For the first time in a while, my little niggly reminder pain from my back is back the realms of "raging back pain"

So this means that the antagonist all along is core or impact...

I know the source to be the disc, this recent return of pain means its obviously going to take one hell of a long time to piss off, if at all

So..last week I did core and weights and 3 sessions of core involved 1 impact exercise each:

Side to side jumps
Squat jumps
Squat thrusts.

The idea was to gradually ease back into impact so I could get up to 3 runs a week for the cyclocross- this may not happen.

Hopefully by continuing core and strength I can get strong an the pain will go, whether a cyclocross season is on the cards remains to be seen.
This am was the Monday strength routine.

In other news, my feet still hurt.

Meh.
