Cheeky ride out post socialising with the out=laws- met up with Danny and headed out to Castleton and up Pindale. Nice time up Pindale despite chatting whilst working hard then back through Litton, up Monsal and home via a great climb I didnt know about through Bakewell gold course

Cycling tempo 2:15:05 [5] 40.0 mi (17.8 mph)
ahr:148 max:174

Wit a very busy weekend ucl idling a full strength in laws visit and the cycling club awards night, I was disappointed to experience a sub-optimal nights sleep due to the little one.

This was exacerbated by NO coffee on the house. I almost sacked the planned 60min tempo off but with no other gap in the day cracked on at 0730 on the same route as last time.

It felt slow and hard throughout and felt a bit of a whimp but was rewarded by some strava cups so can't have been too bad. My biggest issue is being shit at descending- which is not fitness related but bollocks related.

I have entered the Buxton Mountain TT a renound hilly TT. I have to say this session doesn't fill me with confidence of my chances. My descending is woefull ( were talking losing 2 minutes over 2 mile segments

Cycling 45:00 [3] 13.5 mi (18.0 mph)

First day back at work today. The plan was 45 mins turbo pre work then cycle home...that didnt happen as I woke up feeling knackered s settled for just 45 mins off leg speed drills and tabata

Easy pootle out then an attempt on the carr lane ill climb- Im so unfit but that did allow me to realise that there is a 180 HR in me if I push hard enough.

Frustratingly this was into a headwind vs last weeks easy pootle up in with a tail wind(which was rewarded with 7th place on the leader board.

This attempt put me 4th- however my chuffing cleat clipped out on the steep bit so I had to sit back down and soft pedal! So frustrating!

Cycling hills 1:53:40 [5] 32.75 mi (17.3 mph)
ahr:140 max:169

Headed out for a 60 min warm up then did 3 long efforts up Beeley- aiming to maintain a threshold effort and remain seated the whole way up.

Had to do it on the cross bike as other bike not fixed yet, with a favourable wind up beeley this was a good session and managed fairly consistent times according to strava with an AHR of 160

Recovery was a pedalled turnaround descent of approx 5mins (cos I'm turd at descending)

Pleasing workout off poor sleep

Cycling 2:46:42 [3] 44.75 mi (16.1 mph)
ahr:127 max:165

After a nice visit to introduce Sophie to the Thake family, Andy myself and Tim headed out on a ride into the peaks, jsut as the horrible weather front arrived.

We headed to Owler Bar then down surprise before turning through hathersage and heading up to Yorkshire Bridge, we took the Abney Gliding Club climb then via Eyam headed up Froggat then said an emotional farewell and went our separate ways home.

Initially enjoyed it, but towards the end I was very cold and couldnt wait to get home

Cycling tempo 2:05:13 [4] 36.25 mi (17.4 mph)
ahr:143 max:171

Hilly tempo. Decided to save the hill reps for a day when I have less time and the weather is crapper.

I finally headed out for a recce of the Matlcok CC hilly 25 mile TT route- bin looking forward to this for a while as it heads through some of my favourite villages.

Sadly- the entirety of the first hour of the ride was into a nasty headwind! So I felt totally shamoooed on arrival in Monyash. Here my phone rang and panicked that it was Hatts so stopped. It was in-fact the HSBC fraud squad. I am always rude to them as I don't trust them. On my return I called them via a different number to the one they provided and found out that it was in fact a fraudulent fraud squad. I'm glad my lack of trust was corroborated.

After a further 10 mins of pain my 45 mins was up and i continued along the route to recce it for future tempo sessions, sadly- I took a wrong turn so will have to revisit it next week. No biggy its a cracker of a loop.

I wasn't expecting any reward for my efforts due to the headwind but made it onto a few leader boards which is nice and gives me something to target in better conditions. This will become a staple Saturday session methinks

Note

I would like to play a game.

Due to the obvious lifestyle changes of late, I have uploaded my Lovefilm account. Trouble is, I've seen many of the films and the others don't inspire me.

Your challenge, is to name 5 very good films that I haven't seen so I can add them to my list...

There are rules however.

1.You cannot name a film anyone has named.
2.If I have seen it, you have to come up with another...
3.If its crap you have to buy me a pint. (Only joking)

I like any kind of film- although a romantic themed film is going to have to really raise its game to inspire me.

GO...

Cycling 40:00 [3] 12.0 mi (18.0 mph)
ahr:117 max:160

So, today I had some long hill reps planned, I was very excited too. Sadly, last night I had two poorly girls on my hands and we were up all night, including a trip to the out of ours GP.

Luckily everyone is happy, well and smiling today, however Thursday 20/3/14 never got off the ground in the Archer household!

After some sleep I decided to just jump on the turbo and do some leg speed and pedalling drills, better than nothing and in fact fairly worthwhile. Core was planned, core was binned

Cycling 2:01:26 [3] 33.75 mi (16.7 mph)
ahr:133 max:172

Yesterdays emergency rest day led to a bit of a change of plan for the rest of the week. Thursday has a horrid forecast that I was keen to avoid, however now I'm stuck with it as cant be arsed turboing.

So...following a day of visitors, I decided to head out for a nice easy explore and although it continues to be mega windy I was rewarded with some world class views, absolutely breath taking. Headed down to Rowsley then through a few big climbs to birchover and a few villages I've never before visited (all of which were beautiful) I then headed down to darley dale and over to Matlock bath/ cromford before climbing back to the moor top and back home for a lovely sunset view.

A nice re-energiser of a ride.

Note
(rest day)

Tired today but more significantly Hatti's nap overran into my training window so decided to use the remaining time to wash my bike instead.

Sadly this means that my planned rest day which was Thursday due to the shite weather forecast, must now become a training day. Not looking forward to that. May have to press the turbo panic button

Cycling tempo 1:50:10 [4] 33.75 mi (18.4 mph)
ahr:137 max:169

Felt ready to start some efforts so this week see the build up of tempo efforts, beginning with 30 mins today. Did a 50 minute loop to Baslow then hit the road to Calver cross roads before heading through Hassop and along the Bakewell to Matlock road.

At Rowsley I headed left towards Beeley and by this point my time was up. The plan is to build the duration incrementally and from this point I have a nice climb up Beeley to take in and then a loop on Beeley moor which will ultimately take me to 75 minutes.

The conundrum is how do I fit this into my training now the little one is here the rule is 2 hours most days then 3 on a Sunday.. Perhaps I pay be able to stretch the saturday ride to 2 hours 30 if I go nice and early.

Anyways, my legs have been in bits for the past few weeks, but I really enjoyed the effort

Cycling 2:40:21 [3] 43.25 mi (16.2 mph)
ahr:135 max:171

Well. That woke me up. So, so windy!!

Headed out to meet Danny at his house before riding out to Heath to check out a new hill climb that will be used as our club event next year. An absolutely brilliant climb, with a stunning view at the top- looking forward to getting stuck in.

Nice to get out on new roads too, need to have a good explore out that way

I also learned a nice early "how to plan training with a baby" lesson. Sadly that means not relying on meeting other people for rides. I planned to get in 3 hours and got the ok from the boss for good behaviour, sadly when I got to Danny's house he was no where near ready.

This took an entire 20 mins off my total. Luckily the ridiculous wind today meant that I was goosed anyway by this time, but its an unfortunate note to self.

Aside from the head wind on the way back it was a beautiful day and blew the cobwebs away.

On a stretch of rode that a HR of 168 would normally reward me with 25pm, I was pushing 10MPH, such was the wind!

Plan now is to enter phase 2 of the base period, with some tempo and long seated hill efforts, I really need to try and get back on top of the core routine too

10 AM

Cycling 1:40:26 [3] 28.0 mi (16.7 mph)
ahr:139 max:174

The plan was to recce the local 25 mile hilly TT loop so that I can use it as a nice training loop.

However, the fact that the wind added a whole 4 minutes to my ascent of harewood road to Beeley moor suggested that doing this would significantly hamper my chances of doing so in the allocated 2 hours before my stint with the little one.

I headed out Matlock way instead and did a section of the short Hilly TT loop instead, good fun but I felt very unfit- poss the wind and tiredness. Great to get out and certainly blew a few cobwebs away- if a little scary at times with the cross winds

Note
(rest day)

Got dressed to get out on the bike and was very much looking forward to a ride, however- I decided to sack it off as I'm pretty knackered from the first night at home. All is well but the first night included lots of feeding/ changing and we have a lot of things to get our heads around.

We seem to have a nice idea of how to organise things now though so if things stay the same, hopefully tomorrow I'll be a bit more rested and get out for a quick spin.

Loving being a daddy.

Cycling 1:06:46 [3] 20.0 mi (18.0 mph)

Cheeky little ride out in the stunning weather, on my new bike which I bought in the winter in a sale but haven't had chance to ride. It was amazing. She is a lightweight aero bike going by the name of "Wind Cries Mary"

I earned a 90minute pass out seeing as though I spend the afternoon waiting on the in-laws (thought it was the other way round).

Sadly, a 3 hour ride followed by a 24 hour labour meant that I had nothing in the tank and despite discovering that the new bike goes like the clappers with some effort, I popped very quickly. Spent the whole ride picturing Sophie's face, so was glad to get back.

This weather can stay, it was lush. All in all, a bloody amazing day. Never been happier

What a stonking day. Trusted the BBC weather forecast and put my ride off until 1pm and wasn't disappointed.

I headed out to Grindleford up Nether Padley, down surprise then headed over to the climb to abney gliding club (absolutely stunning stretch of quiet road) then dropped through Eyam to recce a few strava segments that have been nominated for this months segment hunters.

From here I headed through Chatsworth and out to Matlock and up Bank road before heading back home.

Great ride but legs and body tired from a 9 day stretch at work and successful 3 weeks back training with nice mileage and a definite return of some fitness, with weight loss to boot.

Easy few days now then into Base phase 2- looking forward to some efforts!
Think I will use the Nether Padley climb and the Segment hunters segments as a fitness test this weekend

Cycling 53:23 [3] 14.5 mi (16.3 mph)

I took the unorthodox decision to train through my rest day in fear of the imminent new arrival, I'm sure I will be resting for at least a few days when they come

Planned the reverse of the route I did home last week but missed a turning and panicked, which resulted in me getting to work very early, rather than very late... not sure how i feel about this- i think I would rather have been late and well trained- but the loops around the hospital are a bore so I took the hint

Post work- trying to get as much cycling in as possible without using the big light.

Starting to feel a bit fitter so hunted a few segments that my colleagues who live in SHeffield often hit on their commute through Dronfield and Unstone. I dont know the roads and didnt know where the segments started so made it a tempo effort from work to meadowhead.

By this time I was enjoying working hard so decided to head to owler bar then home via barlow with the goal of keeping my average speed above 20mph.

Good fund. Gutted Im working tomorrow, the weather looks amaze balls

Finished work at 4 to assist with the logistics of ditching a car at work for the foreseeable future to enable cycling to work and not shitting it about Hatts going into labour.

Legged it out into the peaks on what was a nice evening. The plan was to cycle hard for 90 minutes and take in Froggatt.
I felt strong tonight (but no where near where I was pre-rest)

I had a series of mechanicals which dampened the ride and cause an element of panic as I aimed to be back before sunset. Essentially my mud guards a)flew off and also into my wheel b)snapped off.

Never felt safe with them and will never have any again.

Mansfield RC "Big red ride"

A nice organised ride around the roads of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Setting off in groups of 20 we headed out and very quickly got stuck into some fast paced riding on the flat country roads.

I found myself in a decent group with a lad called Damien Shakespeare. He's renowned for making long rides tough for the unfit, so in my current fitness I was a little apprehensive. As it turned out, people would do a turn on the front with him, drop back and never be the same again.

I was keen to see how fit he was having never ridden with him, so got stuck in at the front and shared (raced) the pace with him. At two hours I took a look around, the group of 20 was now 6. We hammered the pace all the way back and at the penultimate hill I put an effort in. Two came with me and we gapped the rest of the group, we coasted in and joined up with a group who had set off before us.

Great fast paced work out and pleased with my fitness, considering these guys are all in race shape for the road season- I have a lot of work to do however!!

I really wish I had the bollocks to race on the road- the rush is amazing

Cycling long 3:11:00 [3] 54.25 mi (17.0 mph)
ahr:142 max:175

I'm really keen to test myself around Strines, but don't really know my way around. However, with news that there is a hill climb event on the eve of the grand depart in Low Bradfield, I decided to go reccy it and pay a visit to the beloved dam flask.

A nice challenging hilly ride, which highlighted just how unfit I am. Despite putting effort in on one or two climbs I was no where near any Strava leader boards.

I'd be lying if I didn't have a lump in my throat whilst cycling past all my favourite running routes, particularly limb valley, the parks and the flask. Was a bit resentful of the many water bottle brigaders out running. Why them and not me?

A great ride nonetheless. Looking forward to getting fit and targeting a few races.

Another great looking HC is in Lincoln in may, bit too soon for me but may give it a stab. Its a cobbled hill climb and its done in rounds so the fastest people get to the next round with the final 4 racing to the top of the hill. Sounds ace
