Running race (Telford 10k) 31:48 [5] 6.21 mi (5:07 / mi)
With an entry for the XC and Telfrod I let the weather decide where I raced this morning. XC being the bad weather option. I woke up relieved to not be ill. But didnt wear my HR in case any high readings scared me.
I really fancied the XC but didnt want to miss out on a fast race. I also wasnt sure whether my hammy could withstand the Kimberworth course and its cambers. As it stood, the overnight ice had cleared so off to Telford I plodded.
I met Mike Burrett for a warm up on the course. A fast downhill start onto a (suprisingly very) muddy section, before jumping on a disused railway line for an out and back. Minus the hill on lap 2, there were 2 laps of the muddy section and railway line.
My first mile was 4.54.I would have hoped for quicker, but it was a very twisty and narrow drop and a bit of a mission in staying upright.
Game on. I settled in. At 2 miles (I try not to do this), but looked at my gamin..5.08..bollocks! I wanted 4.59 at least... Then came the first turn around, after which my legs felt like led and each time I struggled to get going.
We got to 5k and I went through in 1540. No sub 31.. In fact at this point I was already hanging on for dear life. Drop out? This debate rattled on for a while in my head. I rationalised that i would only end up doing tempo to bump the miles up and I had 40 seconds to play with to try and keep under 32. (I also contemplated stopping, jumping in the car and doing the XC, but remembered it started at the same time!)
I kept going at survival pace. A group of 4 passed me, I tucked in behind them. We then hit the out and back trainline section again, which was narrow and had the lead runners opposing us, pushing us to single file. The group slowed and my split said 5.20... Shit!
I saw a gap from the leaders and legged it round the group of four and picked the pace up. We entered the last mile and they came past me with 800 to go. I had nothing and just kept going with a token effort from 400 out.
Pre-race I rationalised that at the dash I had poor training, was ill on the day and for a few weeks before, but now had 4 weeks of consistent training. With that in mind I was hoping for 31.20 or better.
I never felt on terms with the race, in fact I felt shit throughout. So thats two races feeling shit throughout (and slow). So if I am to take a positive; 2 "bad" races have led to 314x runs. I just need to find out what is missing to make a jump.
I think it is mile reps off longer recoveries as Im not handling sustained faster paces.
The splits tell a story.
4.54, 5.08, 5.07, 5.18, 5.22, 5.04, 4.52 (.21)
Things I have learned... even a conservative start is a tough one for me personally to pick up the pace from-today was controlled but I couldn't find any more gears. So at the yorkshires Im going to really have to work my way through and if that doesn't end in the result I want...so be it.
Also, I felt fatigued today when warming up. Last week was my biggest yet, so was a bit of a risk with today in mind, but I need some decent training pre XC.
For the Xc its going to have to be a 2 week taper judging from this.
Finally, my hamstring is now a bit sore :(
