Running 2:17:38 [3] 21.0 mi (6:33 / mi)

Long run from the folks house. Set out to do 18 but misjudged the distance spectacularly. No biggy though as I was planning on upping the LR distances soon anyway.

Hamstrings (both) sore from the off and restricting my range of movement a little. But I can still run easy/steady with in the discomfort- it's anything in anger that they're struggling with.
Did a few 2mile stints at a steadier pace-dictated by the hammys.

Lots of reflecting- partly of my running frustrations/goals and partly from yesterday's match. The Millwall fans were so abhorrent I don't think I'll forget them for a while

Note
(rest day)

Hammy feeling better than expected but couldn't walk about last night. Think (know) it was the right decision to drop out but feeling a bit blue none-the-less.

Just feel like a bit of a loser for dropping out- but i think in my heart of hearts I knew there was a high chance of my hammy not liking the descending.

Still feel really motivated to give the planned races a good crack though.

Planned rest day to go to Wembley today-excited!

Running 35:20 [3] 4.75 mi (7:26 / mi)

Balls. Another day another disappointment. When the race started one or two commented that it was a fast start. I was around where I wanted to be in about 12 and actually felt really good. In fact I got my "this is your day feeling",which ive only ever felt on the days where ive landed my best runs. I didn't want to change the pace and was happy to settle in.
One or two of the guys I was actually here to compare myself to were a way up the field and pushing on- but I felt this would be an error for
Them. So I kept at it.

The first lap was a shorter one with a sharp narrow climb and an open descent where I was pleased to see I was holding my own with the group ahead which included Mounsey and Adams.

After the long deacent we then hit our next series of climbs (more than lap 1). To my amazement I started picking people off 1 by one- relatively early in the race.

Sadly and to my surprise my right hammy started to hurt (the one which I tore at Sheff). I cracked on as I was starting to think that my dream scenario was panning out.

In fact, quite soon I caught Steve Heeblethwaite, who on current form I would consider a scalp. It was at this point we hit the much talked about trussocky clamber. This was a hands on knees job at best and in parts a grab what you can and pull job!

My quads were wobbly as hell at the top here and it coincided with a very narrow and twisty descent. My hammy was really
Struggling with this.

I had to make a call and I decided to jog it in. I feel pretty sad about it. I hate dropping out of races, but it's even worse that it's my second mountain race to DNF.

I'm not sure what qould have happened if the hammy wasn't an issue but having heard how things panned out on lap three I think may have found myself in my dream scenario of being relatively high up with
Some of the English lads- but it's a case of should-a,would-a,could-a.

What ever the case, I want to do this and I think I can if I keep at it and get a bit of luck. But there's a heap load of work to be done.

On a side note- Whinlatter is bloody amazing- wish I had that on my doorstep for training. I've also fallen in love with the lakes, I need to spend more time there.

Running 15:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Dicking about trying to find this climb of death that everyone kept banging on about- never found it

Running 28:19 [3] 4.0 mi (7:05 / mi)

Shakeout. Supposed to be out and back along the shores of derwent water but I went wrong almost immediately. At the exact same point I went wrong last time I was here about 8 years ago.

Anyway- got a run in. my back has been screaming the last two days, froma combination of lots of carrying the little one and lots of driving (10hours in 2 days). Consequently I was dreading this.

It wasn't too bad, although I felt very lethargic and my left hammy a little troublesome.

I've felt brill throughout the last 3-4 weeks of decent mileage- but these last few days I've felt a bit schamooed. Probably due to not having the daily adrenaline shot of work...hopefully not from overcooking things.

Really looking forward to tomorrow. I really psyched myself out of it earlier by looking at the start list who h didn't contain many names- but I counted 17 who would more than likely finish ahead of me.

Luckily on the jog tonight I reminded myself that this race was only ever about gaining experience anyway. But, having had a look at Whinlatter today im well excited, it's such a cool place- wish we had somewhere like that to train nearby...

**special thanks to the Winskills for letting us stay at their palace**

Note
(rest day)

Bugger. Woke up with a very stiff back and muscle spasm in my left hamstrings. Basically due to LOTS of picking up and putting down an indecisive Sophie.

Planned a run later but ran out of time cramming family activities before embarking on the Cornwall to Keswick journey (be interesting to see how that one affects the back...)

Lota of stretching and mobilising and a little drop of ibuprofen. Fingers crossed (bit worried).

Really cant be arsed with this drive

Keen to use the taper to allow my hammy to recover more (but keen not to over-taper at this point in the season)... I decided to jsut go out and do a mile at race effort and 4 x the hill from the other day.

I alos thought I would give the hill the beans and try and get the KOM.

Flat out (or as much as I dare with the hammy)...I came eighth..FFS!!!

Lovely morning, felt tired when I woke up, but enjoyed running hard. Hope I feel the same on sat.

Not sure if such easy running is a good or bad thing...one things for sure, the racing weight dream is out of the window due to a combination of pasties, puddings and fish :(

Running hills 35:33 [5] 4.1 mi (8:40 / mi)
ahr:147

Session of 16*1min/jog back rec. up a hill in Tehidy woods.

Decent hill this. Felt great this morning full of energy and legs feeling bouncy on the jog over.

Decided to just go for 16 efforts rather than 20 with race day approaching.

Also opted for form and a fair effort rather than going balls out, but was starting to become knackered towards the end.

Hammy behaved but became tender with 4 reps to go. A little sore now, but should be ok. Today classes as day 2 pain free.

Uploaded and expected a decent KOM on strava. I was disappointed to find I was 15th!! Those who were above me were almost uniformly on easy jogs as well.. A huge dint in the already fragile confidence of someone training for hill racing!!!

Oh well. Another session down-nice to do something a bit sharper. But if I can survive Whinlatter I really wanna get some decent mileage and more intense sessions in for the uphill races.

Running 1:11:58 [3] 10.0 mi (7:12 / mi)
ahr:127

Planned a session today but the journey down to Cornwall was pretty crap last night and then we couldn't get Sophie to sleep until 3pm! (Then she woke at 0730).

Consequently I felt jet lagged all day. So, after throwing the diet out of the window to try and get through the day I just settle for a plod around the lovely Tehidy woods. Felt a bit shit from eating a large, naughty lunch. But pleasingly (after intensive friction massage, eccentric hammy curls, icing, stretching and ice massage) I found myself at day 1 of pain free. A nice surprise after 7 hours in the car

Will do todays session tomorrow and will jsut sack off this weeks long run...no biggy..I hope

Tired and lethargic today. Was ravaged with hunger yesterday and ate accordingly. Frustratingly couldn't resist a few pints which ruined the diet.

Morning plod around Linacre. Just a single today as wel travel to Cornwall after work. Right distal hammy has a clear tendonitis on it, so may have to sack off whinlatter...but we will see..

Uphill threshold from Chatsworth
Started raining the moment I set of so got pretty soaked. Didn't go too crazy on the descent as it was wet and didn't want to risk the hammy.

Couldnt get going tonight despite trying so just did what i could. Backing off for a week now (and going on holiday to Cornwall, hopefully the leg will settle.

HR around 150 for the threshold, which is very low end. But will do.

IW- dreading this and expecting not to be able to make it in.

Fortunately although a little sore things were no where near as bad as I envisaged post session. Phew..
4 PM

Running 1:05:11 [3] 9.15 mi (7:07 / mi)
ahr:125

...then as the day wore on my hammy became progressively sore and I wasn't sure how I'd get home. Spent much of the day wondering if I was developing the injury that kept me out for the best (worst) part of 2 1/2 years.

Decided to set off anyway and was stunned to find that it wasn't as bad as expected (though still sore).

What was a concern was a neuropathic burning sensation in my left groin, back feels tight so need to be careful (probs coming secondary to the tight hammy).

Had a fun runner vs. horse section on the mile long bridleway climb from holmebrook to Linacre. 2 horseriders were jsut ahead and kept cantering to stay in front of me, then slowing. So I picked it up to keep them on their toes. Was good fun.

Spent some more time on the run contemplating Whinlatter. I REALLY want to race it, but not because I expect to achieve anything of note. The field looks set to be one of the strongest in a mountain trial for a long time and the build up hasn't been ideal (although decent).

What I am excited about is a)actually racing again and b) seeing where I do stack up against these guys, particularly in a decent field.

But I need to be smart. I'm hopefully more suited to the uphill race due to lack of descending bollocks and speed. So I want to get to these races.

If I'm to do Whinlatter I'm only allowing myself to make the journey if I can get 5 consecutive days of pain free running. So fingers crossed...

Running 32:40 [3] 4.4 mi (7:25 / mi)

Plod round Linacre pre- home visits. Lovely morning, hammy disappointing from a rest dy. Decided against holmebrook session in favour of Chatsworth uphill tempo
5 PM

Running 56:35 [3] 10.25 mi (5:31 / mi)
ahr:154

Decided I didn't have time for the Chatsworth session as I'm catching up with a mate. Headed to Holmebrook for the original planned session. In fact originally the planned session was a sharpener but I cant go hard with the hammy so swapped in favour of 15 mins/2mins, 4 x mile/2mins, 15mins.

Hammy shit warming up and shit throughout session, just spent the whole session trying not to aggravate it, focusing on form, running within it (ish) and waiting for it to snap.

As it stands, it survived (just) no more tricky sessions to get through now just uphill ones. Not sure I'm gonna make the start line at whinlatter as I can't race like this, just got to cross everything.

To be fair, the hammy has reigned my training in to a level that has probably allowed me to get through a high mileage block relatively fresh. In this session it actually allowed a pretty consistent session and I was about toasted in the last 5 minutes so probably gave me the perfect workout.

Whether all this will result in any sort of form remains to be seen, but its been an enjoyable training block hamstring aside.

Running long 2:05:00 [3] 18.0 mi (6:57 / mi)

Met Ben early for a loop before hooking up with Zak and Andy C for the big loop of the resers. Both of us starting with trepidation re: our respective injuries.

Despite the hammy being painful it didn't restrict my movement. I was at the football last night in a lot of pain and thinking it might be time to jump on the bike.

Enjoyable social at an easy pace but legs and general energy levels MILES better than the last 2 long runs which is great. In fact I'm starting to feel good on the consistent higher mileage.

Had a bit of an epiphany last night as I frantically checked the BMC results for friends performances (and to see if anyone I don't like had beaten my pb).

A few people I don't like (I'm saying this tongue in cheek), beat my pbs and to be honest, I really don't care.

In fact I'm starting to become at peace with my quest to hit certain times and I'm not sure I can really be arsed wasting a summer running round in circles in order to shave seconds off (in the scheme of things) a mediocre 5000m pb.

On the flip side, although I'm having to compromise my training atm I am really enjoying training for and getting excited about, mountain races this summer. I'm never going to be as good as those at the top end. I'm never going to be as good technically as the best fell racers. But both disciplines are all about racing, will get me fit and will take me to nice places to train and race.

So its a no brainer. From now on my winter focus is XC with the odd 10k and my summer focus is mountain running and culminating with a marathon or half. I feel quite relieved to get this pb monkey off my back.

I may have the odd dabble on the track but I want to define myself as a particular type of runner to try and get the best out of myself and I think mountain/ marathon running will compliment one another nicely and get the uices flowing. Phew.

Running hills 1:02:45 [5] 9.0 mi (6:58 / mi)
ahr:142

12 x 3 mins uphill/90secs run down rec.

split this into 2 blocks of six and ran down to the bottom of loads road before doing it again.

Hammy a bit sore this morning but ok to run on so went for it, but it was obvious from the start I would have to run within the hammy pain. V. annoying.

Last 4 reps were a bit squeaky bum as the hammy started cramping. Fingers crossed I can get away with it and just avoid downhill running.

HR pretty low and felt pretty good at the end which may or may not be a good thing. I could really do with a lung busting session or 2 like a 3k pace type effort. Maybe I should jump on the turbo and do something.

Anyway, stunning, fresh morning for it and aside from injury paranoid I enjoyed it.

Weight loss coming along nicely, should be a sensible weight for Whinlatter, then the plan is to look ill for Skiddaw ;)

HFW

Again hammy sore so ran within it, but again felt quite good energy wise which is really positive after 4 hard weeks. I wish my hammy wasn't sore as I feel pretty fit now.

Had to re-jig training in the hope that the hammy can handle something hard this weekend.

So its uphill reps, long reps and no hard downhill running until Whinlatter.

Not ideal, but Whinlatter is just a bit of fun anyway. I'd liked t give a good account of myself in the uphill races though

Threshold run. Couldn't wait to get out tonight. Feel fine in myself at work (in prev. overtraining phases have felt dreadful), but starting to feel a bit shit initially when running, bit lethargic. Luckily it settles after about 1 mile or so.

Warmed up and cracked on for 3 laps of Linacre. 8 mile at threshold. Improved pace form last time I did this (but much better conditions). Frustratingly my right hammy flared up again at the end (recent issues have been the left).

Very frustrating. Needed to try this though to see if it can handle downhill running. Think I'm gonna have to stick to longer reps still and just cross fingers

Really enjoyed it tonight.

Met up with Mike for a long one round the resers. Absolutely glorious morning, so, so nice.

However.. my legs were really tight from yesterday and I had tummy issues from a dodgy beer (4 actually) from last night which caused me to bloody puke in the night! V. embarrassing.

So...yet again this was about survival, but a fairly pleasurable survival. Legs felt on the right side of tired and the hammy was certainly feeling better.

Really enjoyed the run but had to wind up the pace a little at the end to get back in time for a massage and to take Hatts to the station

Ready for tomorrows rest day

Running hills 1:42:12 [5] 14.75 mi (6:56 / mi)
ahr:145

Session of 15 mins tempo, 10 x 2 mins/1min jog down on Curbar, jog down from top 15 mins tempo.

The tempo was 1 mile out on baslow road then back with the remainder working up curbar.

Was a bit anxious about the session with the hamstring problem, I also felt pretty knackered warming up, so it was pretty clear that it would be a "get through" session.

The tempo was pretty decent I was pleased to look down and see 5.25 average, this was ruined when I hit the climb.

The reps were very much a case of running with good form and letting the hill do the work, I'm glad I didn't fight that or I'd have been toast.

After 1 and a half jogs down the hill my quads were pretty trashed, but I was pleased to see 5.34 pace on the tempo, sadly this slowed to around 5.45.

When I hit the hill for the last time, my immediate though was "this is a perfect feeling to replicate the last bit of an uphill mountain race."

I felt totally trashed and just wanted to walk, so I just concentrated on good form and hung on for dear life.

Decent session, felt goosed at the end. Hammy wasnt great throughout but significantly better then wed/thurs (phew).

Just got one more bigger week planned before backing off and then having a chilled week in Cornwall.

Really enjoying trying a few more miles, just need to get the balance right so I don't over cook it. Bit concerned about whether the hammy is going to let me race the downhills at Whinlatter

Had to shelve the planned uphill threshold run as I'd moved my session to wednesday, but also due to the hammy being so painful.

Uphill running has been favourable for the hamstring in the past when niggly though so decided to head out to Beeley and run the route anyway.

Lovely afternoon for it and was treated to an extremely low flying pair of bombers which used the hill at Carlton Lees as a turning point, pretty awesome.

Hammy not great but survived - then went out for a leaving do curry and ruined it all....

Running tempo 58:01 [5] 9.75 mi (5:57 / mi)

Didn't quite mange the lie-in I craved as Sophie woke up at 6.30 in a right bad mood. As it wasI felt fairly refreshed anyway so got up and had brekkie whilst Hatt went to the gym.

I still felt a bit tight and was a bit concerned about my left hamstring and calf.

Headed out to holmebrook and was pleased to note that my left side felt great! But my right hammy felt tight! So bizarre.

Anyways, I cracked on with the planned session of 2(15 mins/2mins, 6x400/60s)/2mins. With recent tirades/tightness/niggles, i decided never to look at the watch to avoid disappointment and accepted that times would most likely be poor.

Half way through the 1st set of 400s the hammy became noticeably tight and I almost abandoned the session. I couldn't quite make myself do it though and settled for running within the discomfort..possibly an error.

The second 400s were pretty slow, but overall it was still a workout worth doing, just need to get these legs used to full training again! Pleased with the tempo paces

I think the decision to avoid all though of track racing has prove to be the correct one, unfortunately. But I'm glad I made it to stop myself trying to do anything too stressful for the leg. Had I attempted the club session or any fast session without the tempo stuff I think that would have finished the leg off.

So, it is longer reps, tempo, threshold and hill reps for the forseeable (and the bike). My main concern now is, can the hammy survive the downhills at the Whinlatter race. I hope so, I want to come out of that race with no excuses.

Ps what a lovely day!!

Pretty stressful post bank holiday work day, with too much to do and not enough staff in! Worsened by me getting a migraine just before lunch and feeling lousy all day.

Luckily at about 4pm I talked myself out of doing the planned session.

Set off for a nice plod around Linacre and felt better than expected, but just got through it. Need to respect that fact that working the weekends takes it out of me, whether I liked it or not.

Hammy not too bad, but defo thanking me for not doing a sesh.

Stonking evening, really enjoyed it

(rest day)

Slept soooo shit last night, grrrr, could have done with a good nights kip. Oh well, nice to have a rest day on a day off for once.

Bit of an odd sensation on my left hamstring cropped up when running last night, still here now, felt similar when the right one went at Sheff...need to watch that

Post work death march around Derwent and Howden.

A tough weekend at work, not been like that for a long time. Was falling asleep on the drive over and legs still Domsy, so unfortunately I barely enjoyed it!

Nice to be alone with my thoughts for a few hours- never get bored of the scenery around there.

Looking forward to a rest day
