IW

Legs ok but blistered foot a little uncomfortable
3 PM

Running 1:13:22 [3] 10.0 mi (7:20 / mi)
ahr:120

HFW

Bit flat and legs bit DOMSY (right > left).

Left knee pretty sore.

Out for anniversary tonight and was a bit of a pig. Really need to get good again now.

Weather forecast for weekend is terribly with high winds, had a key session planned around Castleton….but it is it wise? (Also potentially unwise if the DOMS persists..and i plan to be smart with regards to that)

Running hills 2:12:35 [5] 17.0 mi (7:48 / mi)

Cannot believe my luck that I had annual leave planned for a Win Hill session on a day like today.

Session was 2.8 mile tempo along the Ladybower side trail form the foot of Win, then 3 by Win Hill (2 x the climb nearest the plug hole sandwiched with one from the railway bridge via the farm).

Then a repeat of the tempo. Idea was to try and keep tempo paces the same. So deliberately set off at a controlled pace for tempo and just got up each climb at an honest pace trying to slot into a rhythm. Ran fully loaded with raceday kit and water

Great to have Steve Franklin and BaBa for company.

Loved every bloody second, felt tired heading over and warming up but conditions were perfect and views were stunning. Great stuff. Great to have company.

Only slight negatives were my knee really hurting towards the end and getting a blister towards the end. Left hammy bothering me throughout and quite sore now

In terms of 3 peaks it was interesting as I stacked it on the final climb when traversing the area where all the trees are down due to fatigued legs…something to think about on race day.

Also couldn't maintain tempo pace due to leg fatigue (mainly from descending), HR lower though so not a fitness issue. We ran the descents easy although just watching the lads I know I'm going to lose a spectacular amount of time on the race, so will have to rely on decent tempo and uphill shape and try not to be a fanny on the day. Hard when you're a fanny

Maybe start even more conservatively, or maybe just accept the last 7 miles are gonna be grim.

Tempo 1 5.43 pace HR 152
Win 1 12.07 HR 157
Win 2 12.33 HR 158
Win 3 12.49 HR 159
Tempo 2 6.02 pace HR 150

All ruined when I got home as Hatti had bought me some scotch eggs and beer

Headed out with Charlie to run the Grindleford Gallop route. Started at Baslow to be economical with time as its Sophies birthday today. I uploaded a race GPX file to my garmin to guide us round.

It worked a treat and I was loving every second, until we hit Grindelford and the fact that this was the finish seemed to throw the garmin. We then got distracted by someone who had found a lost dog. Sadly we then went way off course, thinking we were on course.

Once we'd realised it was too late to try and get back on as Charlie is trying to sensibly build up mileage for the marathon and I wanted to get back to Sophie.

I spat my dummy out a bit in frustration as I had just been so looking forward to it, but once we came to terms with it we enjoyed exploring new trails having 11 miles to play with. Still very enjoyable and a lovely morning.

Wore my new Roclites for the first time and they were amazing in the mud. Defo my 3 peaks shoe unless its a total quagmire.

Aware of my hammy throughout, but legs ok after yesterday. 2 easy days and then a big session on Wed.

Stuffed my face with beige food at Sophie's party and feel awful now! Wont need to try to gain anymore weight!

Note

Hamstring feels awful this morning. If this was an individual race I'd be sacking it. But it's Yorkshire and it could be my last ever chance to do it. A result will be getting through it able to do a long run tomorrow. Grrr. What am I doing.
2 PM

Running warm up/down 32:00 [3] 4.3 mi (7:27 / mi)

Running race 40:30 [3] 7.45 mi (5:26 / mi)

Stressed out of my box before this (as you've probably read). I left convinced that it was going to be my last race for a while, fully expecting a hamstring ping.

Hammy felt tight all the way up to the gun, so decided early on that despite it more than likely being a frantic pace, I was going to go easy at the start. This worked well as after a fast start we all hit a bottle neck anyway.

This gave me confidence and I also felt pretty good in myself, so it was game on.

With the hammy I decided to go hard early on so from a first mile around 100th place I picked up and started working through. I loved every second and never got passed, ultimately coming up alongside Chris Arthur with 800m to go, he saw me and put a spurt in but I was about done there and couldn't get round him.

I knew I was on the borderline of 40 so worked hard not to let anyone else pass as I really wanted that 3x (particularly after feeling short changed at the Northerns were I thought I was 14th). I crossed the line for 39th.

Truth be told, the inter counties isn't what it once was, but I'm going to allow myself to be really pleased with today- I beat a couple of decent guys and was around a few I really look upto (poss not their day). Most importantly I felt able to attack vs the National where it was a game of survival.

Hammy was in my mind throughout and towards the end I was bit worried but much better than anticipated. Will I get that North call? Poss not, but I've made the best of my season and I've loved every minute.

Running 32:05 [3] 5.0 mi (6:25 / mi)

Shakeout.

Deliberated, but ultimately decided to do my usual pre-race stride "routine". Don't want to go into a race not trusting my hammy.

Everything went fine, it just feels odd and tightened up a little afterwards. If it hadn't have tightened so much on Sunday then I probs wouldn't be be too concerned about it, but its in my head now. Hope I run well tomoz

Woke up feeling bit snotty as did Soph
