8 AM

Running 1:13:36 [3] 10.17 mi (7:14 / mi)
ahr:125

Morning plod. Windy and very sore adductor/hip flexor/ knee.

Aside from that I felt pretty good considering a decent session yesterday and a planned lie in which was thwarted by Little Miss Terrible.

Calf and foot better than yesterday
4 PM

Running 41:52 [3] 6.0 mi (6:59 / mi)
ahr:120

Attempted to take Sophie for a play in Bakewell, but she was a bit groggy and the park was exposed to the wind. So after a cup of tea and a few Thomas books I ran from Bakewell to Hassop.

Rocked up to see a much perkier Sophie so had a little play. Love Hassop.

Legs a little better but still sore. Pace much quicker than it felt, particularly into the wind. Energy levels good…but I'm struggling to shake my deliberate weight gain habits. Must be strong!

Note

10st 11.. Rapid weight gain. Back at training weight. Need to smarten up now!
8 AM

Running tempo 2:15:43 [5] 22.05 mi (6:09 / mi)
ahr:143

Deliberated up until the second I left the door. The planned 20 mile session along thhe ridge was out as I still felt DOMSy and didn't see the point in slogging in 50MPH winds (yes it might happen on race day and on race day I'll embrace it- special thanks to the Hardman Police)

My decision was between an easy run around the resers, the Gallop, a route from home… or do the planned session-but around the resers.

I opted for the latter but decided to just "get through it" not worrying about hammering it or paces/weather etc..

Also wore mileage shoes as opposed to flats to minimise any risk. Left knee a bit sore on waking but better, but some mild DOMS in both legs. Both legs also pleasantly tired from a relaxed but fairly long bike ride (for someone not cycling regularly).

As it was…I'm delighted I didn't go for the ridge session as it would have finished me off! This was a slog on tired/ achey legs, but I think really worthwhile. HR was low and I felt strong CV wise I think paces were just limited by legs that CNBA

Pretty windy and rainy out so as i said, I just survived it. NIggly by the end particularly left knee, hip, calf and foot (!) Cocked up by uploading the shorter version of the session to my garmin which threw me bit at the end, but quickly worked it out

But all should settle with a very easy day tomorrow and a rest day. Although it was a slog i did enjoy it to be fair.

Got to get my head on for Long Mynd now, pretty scared about the second half, but its exactly what I need

Huge number of bird watchers out…wanted to ask them which bird was in town but I was "reppin " both times I passed them.

Thought I'd been quite cautious with my training plan but in hindsight a few things were wrong. Although I left a fair amount of time between sessions- 2 big hill sessions in a week is too much (obvious in hindsight). I think it's because last year when I was training uphill only I recovered well as I took the descents slower.

Anyway- another lesson learned..time to tweak the plan

Note

Didn't get in the North team… but Joe Wilkinson did who was 12th to my 15th…So close!

Admittedly he's had a miles better season than me, but if they purely picked from the Northerns it was a near miss.

Time to get my head on for Long Mynd.
9 AM

Cycling 3:24:40 [3] 49.4 mi (14.5 mph)

Bike ride with Hatts for our anniversary. Showed her my favourite route from home over Beeley, Youlgreave, Hartington, Crowdecote, Monyash and back through Bakewell.

Kept it relaxed and stopped twice at cafes. Knee still a bit grumbly. Was going to run tonight but decided not to bother.

Think I'll forgo the planned session in favour of a session around Ladybower. The last LR session at Castleton took some recovering from and my legs are still a bit sore.

Long Mynd will give me enough hill work I think!

Very enjoyable and weather not as bad as feared.

Running 41:53 [3] 5.8 mi (7:13 / mi)

IW

Legs ok but blistered foot a little uncomfortable
3 PM

Running 1:13:22 [3] 10.0 mi (7:20 / mi)
ahr:120

HFW

Bit flat and legs bit DOMSY (right > left).

Left knee pretty sore.

Out for anniversary tonight and was a bit of a pig. Really need to get good again now.

Weather forecast for weekend is terribly with high winds, had a key session planned around Castleton….but it is it wise? (Also potentially unwise if the DOMS persists..and i plan to be smart with regards to that)

4 PM

Running hills 2:12:35 [5] 17.0 mi (7:48 / mi)
ahr:141

Cannot believe my luck that I had annual leave planned for a Win Hill session on a day like today.

Session was 2.8 mile tempo along the Ladybower side trail form the foot of Win, then 3 by Win Hill (2 x the climb nearest the plug hole sandwiched with one from the railway bridge via the farm).

Then a repeat of the tempo. Idea was to try and keep tempo paces the same. So deliberately set off at a controlled pace for tempo and just got up each climb at an honest pace trying to slot into a rhythm. Ran fully loaded with raceday kit and water

Great to have Steve Franklin and BaBa for company.

Loved every bloody second, felt tired heading over and warming up but conditions were perfect and views were stunning. Great stuff. Great to have company.

Only slight negatives were my knee really hurting towards the end and getting a blister towards the end. Left hammy bothering me throughout and quite sore now

In terms of 3 peaks it was interesting as I stacked it on the final climb when traversing the area where all the trees are down due to fatigued legs…something to think about on race day.

Also couldn't maintain tempo pace due to leg fatigue (mainly from descending), HR lower though so not a fitness issue. We ran the descents easy although just watching the lads I know I'm going to lose a spectacular amount of time on the race, so will have to rely on decent tempo and uphill shape and try not to be a fanny on the day. Hard when you're a fanny

Maybe start even more conservatively, or maybe just accept the last 7 miles are gonna be grim.

Tempo 1 5.43 pace HR 152
Win 1 12.07 HR 157
Win 2 12.33 HR 158
Win 3 12.49 HR 159
Tempo 2 6.02 pace HR 150

All ruined when I got home as Hatti had bought me some scotch eggs and beer
