Event: Bob Rock pokal

Orienteering race 36:14 [4] *** 4.3 km (8:26 / km) +100m 7:33 / km
spiked:15/15c shoes: VJ Integrator
Slovenian National Championships in middle distance. I had a shot today to make a good race. I had a fine mental preparation the previous day - visualising my fight and accuracy. Though - terrain we have been competing in was not quite as I expected.

I started well - in my range, but then it got worse. I had quite some problems with the distance. I have been stopping and searching before the controls. I also missed some azimuts, I have been too careful with the details.

I also made some mistakes - the long leg I took the slower route choice, then I got completely distracted. To 11th I have been slow, then missed 90 degrees to the next one, and from that one I missed again - 30 degrees and something. Also the next leg I took trough the thick undergrowth. Well - in the end 36' (Andraz 24', Samo - almost 32').

I made for 7:30 of mistakes.

1^ Coppa Italia Notturna, Vivaro. We were a bit late for start with Samo since we have been looking for our accomodation before that.

Anyway - it was mass start in the night - one-man relay race. It was interesting to see so many people in the mass start. I didn't take the fast train to the finish with the elite (I couldn't to be honest, of course), but took it easy and tried to get the most out of the race. It was a wonderful opportunity to train azimuth.

Terrain was flat with various land features (some holes and knolls), lot's of paths. It was not that simple to navigate if you got off the course. I was very concentrated in the first loop (30' - 8' behind the winner), but completely distracted in the second, where I made for around 15' of mistakes. I was tired and could hardly follow the map, I turned it around many times, hat to wait a few seconds to determine direction, I was quite lost in the butterflies. Funny feeling - something to be aware of.

Anyway - I lost the lead to Samo from the first loop and when he made a mistake to 18th in the second loop we came together again. He would not overtake me, so we finished together. Presumably the last from the start list.

Iztok caught the train with the elite and finished 5' behind the winner, which is an amazing result! Winner went 42' (Mamleev).

Orienteering race (night - scout) 4:05:00 [4] 10.12 km (24:13 / km) +500m 19:25 / km
spiked:12/12c shoes: VJ Integrator
Traditional scout night orienteering race - NOT. Did a solid job today. The team was 4 old members + one new. Orienteering itself was good, 5 minutes out of the 0 time limit. We ran on topo map 1:25k and have been one of the few teams without a GPS - running on plain compass. We have been quite good. ;)

Terrain was - green, green and green. Partly light green. ;) It was frustrating. Part of the time, but - it was a nice course anyway.

Orienteering mistakes have been only done when approaching attackpoints and catching features. E.g. we made a great mistake following azimuth to the major road for 500m. When there, we attacked CP's with a confidence and never really failing there.

We have been 2nd on the "speed" leg, which is great.

Technical skills have been good. For me - I am very pleased with all my tests. We need to make some more team effort the next time for the top.

Ran again with Samo on Golovec. We had problems with the lamps so we ran on my Petzl only. We decided to use the road. It was partly quite a pleasant run in a "chat" speed, but on the way back we speeded up, even if there was quite some uphill.

Second day of Lipica Open 2007 was generally faster than the first. I ran slower and made some more mistakes, but I was faster in the end. Funny feeling. I didn't do any thorough analysis yet.

I have beaten 10 minutes per kilometer time, which was my goal for the race. Samo has beaten me by 4 minutes, though he had a better motivation most of the track when he as competing face to face with Pavel Ptacek. Pavel was too fast for me today - they caught me on the 20th control or there somewhere.

Also I had a "face to face" competition with Luka Poznic, former orienteer. Our deal was, if he would beat me, I'd make all the webpages for his company for free. Anyway - I felt sorry about the bet, since he didn't see an o-map for more than 5 years, and then he came running karstic terrain in elite course. Ha had a time of 187 minutes. I admire the courage and the fact that he didn't drop out.

Another thing ... I pulled a sleeve of one of our club members, since I need to graduate. He is a PhD in physics. We sort of made a deal for some nice pleasent graduate paper. ;)

Oh, yes ... The course. I ran alone mostly, technically I was not as focused as yesterday, but still ... I had a feeling when I was off the course. So, no bigger booms. No big booms in two days on 8.5 km ... This is something that gives me a good feeling.

Saturday Mar 10

Running ABC's/Stretching 30:00 [3] 1.5 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up before the race. Made a longer warm up with stretching. It was good - even if the race was quite long. It made me feel confident and it's becoming some sort of my "professional" routine.

Finally. Slovenian orienteering season started with Lipica Open 2007. As almost every year. I was really keen to go to the track, setting a goal of beating 10 minutes per kilometer time (elite ran 6:30). I never did that in Lipica so far, but this year was different, since I had a lot of training and since I made quite a few trainings in this area. The last I did was in Dutovlje with 9:20 per kilometer in some easy tempo.

I made no big mistake during the race and as I was starting in the end I was mostly running alone. I was accurate and had a good sense of finding my way to the CP, when I got a bit lost. Long distances were good today, which REALLY is an improvement. I was the worst in long distances since I started orienteering. I didn't really train that, but it improved. Follow the compass to the catching object, choose your attack point ... I really did work a lot with the compass today. More than ever. And it payed off. Mostly. I had still a bit of trouble with micro locations, lots of 10-20s mistakes because of that. In the end, I left out my compass work and got off the track with 2 minutes mistake to the last control. Almost cost me my 10 minutes per km time. ;) But ... In the end I made it allright.

And yes, start time was not sinchronised with the computer. I had a 15 seconds or something like that better time on my stopwatch.

Training with Daniel on Dutovlje map. To get used to Cesare's style of mapping again. I guess it is quite a crucial thing. Went slowly, since I had another race in the afternoon in Bazovica. Made one bigger mistake, and have been quite slow, when not sure about where I was.

Daniel made it in 45:43.

Running last race of Trieste winter orienteering league. It was a lovely league, when we joined competition with trainings mostly. Tracks have been relatively simple and good for confidence (and also discovering your basic mistakes).

I ran with my normal running shoes today, since all my o-shoes are torn. It was not a big disadvantage. Maybe you could feel that the grip was not that stable, but this is all.

I made big error to the 3rd control. Have not seen small stony areas on the bad print and have been wondering too much about "what a shitty map". When I realized, this was only due to the print, I was already past the control. And - I was sure, that I couldn't miss it, so I made quite some error there. 2:30, I guess. Then I made series of small mistakes and have been quite slow. To the 6th I made a parallel mistake - 1 more minute. Then I went on relatively smooth. I made one more mistake to 14th, when I was caught by Iztok. It was a bad direction mistake. Another mistake to 16th, followed Iztok, who was too high. To 17th I have beaten Iztok again, but I went on quite bad to the finish, he has beaten me by 45 seconds there. Funny.

Anyway - alltogether for around 7 or 8 minutes of mistakes. Too much! However - the race itself felt quite smooth.

Iztok, Dani and Seppi made it in 26' something.
