Orienteering race 1:05:35 [3] *** 6.1 km (10:45 / km) +200m 9:14 / km

I have been exhausted today from the previous day. Also my knee was quite sore ... So ... No success today ... ;-)

I ran Coppa Italia 1^ at the Aviano. Middle distance. Start list in elite category full of well known aces. Terrain was nice, though nothing special. Thick green thorny forrest with stone walls, some karstic features, mostly continental -- with empty sandy river (very interesting).

I started bad, but it progressed to better and not to worse. I made a few minutes of mistake to the first control. Though - I was not very fast in any case. Then I got on OK. Felt my knee really bad to the 2nd and then practically all the way until 15th. So, I tried to get most of the technique out of it when I adopted the idea of not getting the most out of the race.

I thought I would be by far the last, but seemed like Iztok and Samo took it easy too.

Some very easy warm up before the race.
Note
I saw some wild animal in the forest today. It was brown and hairy. Sort of some small bear. But it could not have been a bear. I am not sure, what it was. The poor thing must have been scared to death with everybody crossing the terrain there.

Slovenian National Championships in middle distance. I had a shot today to make a good race. I had a fine mental preparation the previous day - visualising my fight and accuracy. Though - terrain we have been competing in was not quite as I expected.

I started well - in my range, but then it got worse. I had quite some problems with the distance. I have been stopping and searching before the controls. I also missed some azimuts, I have been too careful with the details.

I also made some mistakes - the long leg I took the slower route choice, then I got completely distracted. To 11th I have been slow, then missed 90 degrees to the next one, and from that one I missed again - 30 degrees and something. Also the next leg I took trough the thick undergrowth. Well - in the end 36' (Andraz 24', Samo - almost 32').

I made for 7:30 of mistakes.

1^ Coppa Italia Notturna, Vivaro. We were a bit late for start with Samo since we have been looking for our accomodation before that.

Anyway - it was mass start in the night - one-man relay race. It was interesting to see so many people in the mass start. I didn't take the fast train to the finish with the elite (I couldn't to be honest, of course), but took it easy and tried to get the most out of the race. It was a wonderful opportunity to train azimuth.

Terrain was flat with various land features (some holes and knolls), lot's of paths. It was not that simple to navigate if you got off the course. I was very concentrated in the first loop (30' - 8' behind the winner), but completely distracted in the second, where I made for around 15' of mistakes. I was tired and could hardly follow the map, I turned it around many times, hat to wait a few seconds to determine direction, I was quite lost in the butterflies. Funny feeling - something to be aware of.

Anyway - I lost the lead to Samo from the first loop and when he made a mistake to 18th in the second loop we came together again. He would not overtake me, so we finished together. Presumably the last from the start list.

Iztok caught the train with the elite and finished 5' behind the winner, which is an amazing result! Winner went 42' (Mamleev).
