Trails (Stage Trail) 45:16 [3] 5.05 mi (8:58 / mi) +587ft 8:05 / mi

Out and back on Stage Trail. As unexciting as it gets.

Trails (Summit, N. Peak, Mitchell) 5:58:58 [3] 30.2 mi (11:53 / mi) +7298ft 9:40 / mi
slept:8.5 shoes: Wildcats #5

The mud had dried, so felt pretty good about doing a Castle Rock to Summit to North Peak to Mitchell Canyon to Castle Rock run. Made the summit in 1:53:30. Felt ok getting to North Peak, then down to Mitchell Canyon. Got lost running around the north end of the park though, and had really low energy climbing back up Deer Creek fire road, and it showed in my pace.

Spent ten minutes talking to a guy named Ernesto about States, which got me energized for the return to my car. By the time I hit Stage Road, I was really flying and felt very good, more like I had run 20 miles, not 30.

Trails (Wide Loop) 1:30:12 [4] 9.12 mi (9:53 / mi) +1452ft 8:36 / mi
shoes: Wildcats #5

Felt pretty good until I hit the west side of the park, where classic East Bay mud clung to my shoes and made running a pain (though not as bad as it could have been).

The weather was also surprisingly warm and humid - I had to take my shirt off to keep cool. In January. Go figure.

Trails (Stage Trail) 1:13:07 [3] 8.04 mi (9:06 / mi) +1042ft 8:06 / mi
weight:158.5lbs shoes: Wildcats #5

Just went straight out on Stage Road, to keep myself from doing a lot of climbing on muddy trails. Joke was on me, because at the end of the trail was a pretty long incline. Felt off, maybe because of the one beer I had the night previous.

Trails (Sunset Trail Loop) 1:03:52 [3] 6.63 mi (9:38 / mi) +1062ft 8:22 / mi
shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

Trails were muddy from a couple of days of rain. Thought the Vibrams would work well in that terrain, but they also accumulated mud and were actually fairly slippery on rocks.

Hips hurt the next day. Not sure if related to the Vibrams run.

Road (Canal Trail West/South) 36:55 [3] 5.0 mi (7:23 / mi) +52ft 7:19 / mi
slept:7.25 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline 10 #1

Still wet and rainy, so decided to just get out and do five miles on road for a change. Felt decently fast.

Trails (2nd Saratoga Course) 1:33:34 [3] 8.5 mi (11:00 / mi) +1785ft 9:11 / mi
slept:6.75 shoes: Wildcats #5

Wanted to run the 2nd Saratoga course (3 ten mile loops) but Skyline Trail was closed. Decided to run two repeats of just the third loop, but felt crummy and then found a tree across the trail, which took some time to circumnavigate. So I wimped out and called it a day after one loop :-(

See the low sleep hours - wonder if I felt crummy because of that.

Trails (Shell Ridge) 1:21:25 [3] 8.21 mi (9:55 / mi) +1668ft 8:19 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: Raptors #2

Tried to put together an eight or nine mile loop around Shell Ridge, but went down a few wrong turns. Came back right on the ridge for a good mile or so, which was fun.

Raptors are slowly conforming to my feet, but still some discomfort.

Trails (Castle Rock Park) 41:47 [3] 4.75 mi (8:48 / mi) +754ft 7:39 / mi
slept:7.25 shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

A little hillier route in the Vibrams. Felt pretty good the whole way, outside of a bit of abrasion on the left big toe.

Trails (Wide Loop) 1:30:04 [3] 9.41 mi (9:34 / mi) +1478ft 8:20 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Raptors #2

Breaking in a new pair of shoes did not feel good at all. Kind of fighting low energy too.

Out and back on Stage Road. Left calf is locking up again, but other than that, no aches or pains or problems.

Trails (Wide Loop) 1:34:02 [3] 9.4 mi (10:00 / mi) +1355ft 8:48 / mi
rhr:44 slept:9.0 shoes: Wildcats #5

Felt comfortable running an easy pace after yesterday's long run. Just cruised through my nine miles.

Right knee felt uncomfortable initially, and later had that pain in my right hip (perhaps IT band) after descending Burma Road. Pain faded in the second half of the run.

Trails (Summit, North Peak) 4:46:36 [3] 25.01 mi (11:28 / mi) +6117ft 9:18 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Wildcats #5

Ran up Diablo from the south, then over to North Peak, back to the summit, then down to Stage Trail for the rest of my miles.

Felt good going up (talked to someone named Graham, who's going to be pacing at States), but got lazy once I hit the summit - spent too much time admiring the view and filling my bottle.

On the descent off the summit, the middle of my back started hurting, which also slowed me down. Spent time sightseeing on North Peak, sliding down the steep trail and all that, and had to wait in a line to use the water fountain at the summit again!

Then, descending the second time... first, my right hip started hurting, then my lower back, then my left knee. I'm starting to wonder if running in Vibrams is beating me up too much.

Once down on Stage Trail, just went out a bit and came back to get to 25 miles total.

Trails (Wide Loop) 1:27:48 [3] 9.3 mi (9:26 / mi) +1532ft 8:10 / mi
ahr:147 max:188 shoes: Wildcats #5

Legs felt sluggish, was bothered the whole way by the HR monitor strap and my right earphone falling out all the time. Just felt off.

Trails (Castle Rock Park) 33:35 [3] 4.0 mi (8:24 / mi) +445ft 7:36 / mi
shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

Went out 2 miles, then back in the Vibrams. Feet a little tender, but everything settled down after a mile or two.

Trails (Shell Ridge) 1:06:47 [4] 7.24 mi (9:13 / mi) +1187ft 7:59 / mi
slept:8.5 shoes: Wildcats #5

Got a little lost, but found a good, fairly difficult loop course on Shell Ridge.

Trails (Castle Rock Park) 26:31 [3] 3.05 mi (8:42 / mi) +222ft 8:08 / mi
slept:9.0 weight:156.5lbs shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

Took the Vibrams for a trail run. Felt really good (and fast), but my calves were already getting tired by the end of it. Developed a small blister on my left big toe.

Trails (Shell Ridge) 48:23 [3] 5.2 mi (9:18 / mi) +755ft 8:11 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Wildcats #5

Went exploring the Shell Ridge area, and got a little lost but managed to cobble together five miles anyway.

Legs still felt pretty strong, just a little sore from the 20 miles on hard-packed dirt the day before.

Trails (Wide Loop) 3:29:50 [3] 20.2 mi (10:23 / mi) +3298ft 9:00 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Wildcats #5

Ran a washing-machine loop around Stage Trail. Sun was out, and it even got windy at times. Felt pretty good until the last few miles when I ran out of water.

Left foot slightly bothersome again. I'm blaming the Wildcat shoes - time to order those Raptors.

Thursday Jan 5, 2012 #

Trails (Sunset Trail Loop) 1:00:00 [3] 6.6 mi (9:05 / mi) +950ft 8:00 / mi
shoes: Wildcats #5

Ran a little 6.5 mile loop a little harder than easy. Forgot to take my Garmin with me.

Trails (Canal Trail West) 24:05 [3] 3.0 mi (8:02 / mi) +18ft 7:59 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

Ran 3 miles on asphalt with the Vibrams. Everything felt fine, even the hotspot I developed on Monday.

Tuesday Jan 3, 2012 #

Road (Canal Trail North) 29:40 [2] 4.0 mi (7:25 / mi) +20ft 7:23 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:153.4lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline 10 #1

Foggy morning, just went out 2 miles on the Canal Trail towards Concord, then came back. Stomach felt off, but no major problems.

Monday Jan 2, 2012 #

Trails (Sunset Trail Loop) 1:00:51 [3] 6.63 mi (9:11 / mi) +992ft 8:02 / mi
shoes: Wildcats #5

Ran what is essentially Brazen's 10K loop (Stage Road to Sunset Trail, back to Stage Road via Little Pine Creek Rd). Felt like a good workout.

Trails (Vibrams) 30 [2] 2.5 mi (12 / mi)
shoes: Vibram Five Fingers (Trail) #1

Took the Vibram's out to the gym, 2 miles on the treadmill, then back home. Got a hot spot on the inside of my left foot. Feels like my calves had to work a little more than they usually do. Might have tweaked my right knee a little too - will need to be careful.

Started the treadmill at super-easy pace but ended at 7:30 pace, which felt fine.
