RACE (Desert International Oly) 2:29:30 [3] 31.1 mi (4:48 / mi)

Alllmost jumped into the Double (Sprint first, then Oly), but a bit too much coin, and I didn't think I had enough time with the fam....I did. Next year, maybe.

Pre-race:

Shredded a cable housing Friday, spent Saturday cheering for holly. then log fit at Perris. Awesome race prep. No time to swap tires. *shrug*

Up too late the night before - got sucked into Netflix. Up on time, coffee and snacks to go and hit the road (1:30 drive). Arrived with LOTS of time, got the wetsuit deconned for Quagga mussels and hung out in transition.

Things I forgot: sunscreen, ez laces, rubber bands for bike shoes

Swim:

Sucky. Felt like crap for most of it, finally found "my" stroke about 20 minutes in and felt like I was moving reasonably well. The goal was to get through it and not shoot my wad, and I think I managed that. Race results have me at 24:46. PR is 24:11. I have no idea how that happened...

Bike:

Getting into my shoes was a MESS. No rubber bands to keep them horizontal so I wound up at a full stop trying to get on my bike. Rookie move.

Had to pee SO BAD I wound up stopping at about 8 minutes in to handle it. Should have peed in the water. Rookie move #2. Cost me about a minute easy. Not much for legs, but put down what watts I could with the fatigue I was carrying. Cleats are wrecked; left heel turns in at the bottom causing my knee to dive in pretty hard - VMO felt bruised toward the end; I need new ones NOW. Time was 1:15:43. PR Is 1:08, I think.

Run:

46:42. No idea on PR since I haven't done a road tri in 6 years. Last Oly was 2006 at LA City. Fuck, I'm old.

Probably the high point. Ran solid through 5k, fatigue from the week caught up to me and the last 5k was a struggle, but this actually felt OK. Caught and passed a lot, which is completely backwards from how races have typically gone in the past.

Overall, a good effort on tired legs. Oly PR is 2:29:08 from 2006 LA City Triathlon. To come so close to that with this much fatigue is really exciting.
