Baker to Vegas relay. I had leg 9, which is a met downhill, but starts with 2.5 miles of climbing and finishes on an uphill with 1.3 miles of climbing. My leg didn't start until 9 PM; I sat in the car all day driving to Vegas, back to Baker and then 44 miles down HWY 127/178 to the start. Lots of sitting in the car and hurry up and wait.
Jogged a few minutes, then did some strides and drills just to get the legs firing. Haven't ran this hard for this far in YEARS and had no idea how my body would react.
Grabbed the baton from Darby and plunged into the dark, desert night. Checked the effort climbing the first hill so as not to blow the legs and then focused on turnover and form on the downhill. Knew that hammering would shred my quads so just raced within myself.
Got passed early by team 4 (Anaheim PD), later by 7 (Navajo Public Safety), but caught 9 (Riverside Sheriff's) mid-way.
Felt great through 5.5 miles and cracked the throttle the last 2 miles. Suffered climbing the hill, but smartly saved the legs and was able to hold off the 3 guys charging up behind me.
You know you put the hurt on someone when they finish behind you and immediately start dry-heaving. Ha!
Legs not ready for the effort and tried cramping on me. Had to stick around until my groupettto finished after leg 10, then drove 2 HOURS back to Vegas.
Cobb salad from room service and then CRASHED until 0800. Breakfast and people watching at Denny's on Fremont Street, then back into the car for a 7-hour drive home. Crushed.
Team finished 2nd in our class (combined age over 800) and 20th OA. Best recent finish was 6th OA, but people dropped late and we scrambled to field a team at all. Small win. Victory mug #2 in the mail. BOOM.
